Utah has a fantastic index to their burial records. You can find it at history.utah.gov/burials.

Using this, I found that he's buried in Block 9, Lot 52C.

The headstone is already pictured on findagrave.com

I have some information on a John Walklet Brown being in Toquerville, Utah. William hammond rented a lot and farm from John Walklet Brown who moved to Parowan in 1868. John was a lawyer but people had very little money to pay and farming had proven a hard way to make a living.
One of John’s stepsons George A. Lowe’s “favorite stories was telling of the starvation days in Toquerville during the years 1864 to 1868, when they lived on chubs from the Virgin River and Lucerne greens for so long that his mother grew tired of cooking them so (she) staked the kids out. If any one questioned this statement, George pulled up his trousers and showed them the scars on his ankles.
“One day an old man, John Dalton, happened to listen in on this story. He looked at the scars—then at George. ‘George,’ he said, ‘you know you are telling a darned lie.’ George confessed that the scars were made when he used to wade out into Little Salt Lake (Parowan) and gather salt to use and to sell.”

Don't know if this is information on your John Walklet Brown. I hope it helps.

Cherrie
Re: Grandfather (Silas Andersen)
Like I said, Silas Anderson was my childhood friend's father. Every morning, I would walk the three doors down, pick him up and we would go on to school. When I was in the 9th grade, I stopped to pick him up and the Chief of Police, Albert Pasic [sic] answered the door and said the Lynn wouldn't be going that morning.
When I got to school, everyone was walking around saying things like, "Can you believe it?" or "Did you hear what happened?"
Over the next several days and weeks, I finally found out that he'd bought a gun, gone to an area outside of the city and shot himself. Years later, a man who'd been a principal at the same time Silas was said that he'd had some health issues and a serious depression problem.
Lynn and his mother never really got over it, at least in my young mind. Even though she had a teaching certificate and was teaching when she met her husband, she didn't go back into teaching. For years she worked down at the state liquor store in Price.
I remember her being very proper, very intelligent (always correcting my grammar}, and not overtly emotional.
She and Silas were members of the Carbon Country Club and were golfing fanatics. (She said she'd come from a rather large family in Salt Lake and bragged about being the black sheep of her family.)
Silas was part owner of the family farm in Richmond, Utah and would spend every summer there. After his death, they quit going.
There is something else you may have already looked up. My father says that Silas had been married before marrying Montez LaRue Christensen. Supposedly this wife was killed in a auto accident or something.
By the way, I've never heard her called Montez. It was always Monty.
The last time I spoke to Lynn was about 1970. He'd been laid off by Bendix Corp in Florida and was living there. However, my mother has seen and spoken to him several times over the years but our paths haven't crossed we graduated from CEU and left Price.
The reason I found your query was because about a week ago I went to a Carbon High Class reunion, and he was listed as having recently died. Most of us who'd really knew him said that wasn't true. The last address I had for him is in Jasper, Florida.
If you have Lynn's current number, I'd really like it.

I saw Jerry's death certificate and it says that he actually died of pneumonia. He had a triple bypass operation in the 1970's but, his new wife and son David weren't sensible with the heat in their house. I have a sister; Alyssa Kay Andersen that is 44 years old and a half-brother David Godbe Andersen [b 9/11/1975].
*
Tell me what happened to Silas because Montez and Jerry wouldn't discuss it. The last time I spoke to Lynn was about 9 years ago and he was married and working cleaning carpets. Jerry Richard Andersen's second wife, Mary Lou Godbe (801-582-8857), has Lynn's phone number. Tell me Lynn's number if you get it - I liked him quite a lot and noticed he liked fast cars. I'm afraid Mary Lou Godbe is a dangerous lunatic so I don't call her myself.
*
I think Montez died in Salt Lake City and Mary Lou Godbe had her buried there.
Your grandfather's name was Silas. He lived in Price, Utah at 480 East Fourth North. Right across the street from the College of Eastern Utah. The house is gone now. It was bought by the LDS church and torn down right after his wife, Montez died. He has two sons. One Jerry was a law professor as UofU died of a heart attack at the age of 48. His other son's name was Lynn William. He is living in Florida. Silas was the Principal of Price Junior High School. Contact me and I'll tell how that happened. I'll never forget the day. I'm honestly surprised that he had grandchildren. Lynn doesn't have kids, and I didn't think Jerry did either. But, I'm obviously wrong. I lived three houses away for most of my childhood. Lynn was my best friend. My mother tells me that he buried in Richmond, Utah. That's where he's from. I assume Montez (Monty) is buried there also. I know a lot more than I can write here.
Re: Lilly E. Gray!

I found this article on line under Lily Gray:

Elmer L. Gray's Criminal Pardons Application is now available online via the Utah State Archives. What a character. Reading his answers in the form questionnaire, a definite sense of his personality can be detected, which includes sarcasm ("Woodrowe Lamb, a bum,") irony, and exaggeration. He seems quite eccentric, and probably more than a bit cantankerous.
In the document, he has typed a line that has an affinity with and shares a spirit with the one on Lilly's stone. On the line that asks for "Address of parents," Mr. Gray has written, "Booth dead. Died of grief when kidnapers murdered my Wife." Later, he refers to his arresting officers and prison officials as "Democrat officials," and "kidnapers."

So, whatever the real circumstances concerning these family deaths, it can be concluded that Elmer Gray blamed the law for the death of his previous wife and clearly considered her a victim. (Remember, Lilly was a subsequent wife-they married in 1950, three years after this document was filed.)

Elmer Gray's view of the government and law is clear-a criminal, evil organization hell-bent on kidnapping, imprisoning and murdering innocent citizens without cause or provocation.

With all the conspiracy, anti-government, sentiments of victimization within, it is difficult and perhaps foolish not to come to one conclusion-that Elmer L. Gray was responsible for placing the outrageous phrase, "Victim of the Beast 666" on his second wife Lilly's gravestone, and that it refers simply to the government, law enforcement and officials, with whom he likely tangled with his entire adult life*, and the dynamics and beliefs based on his experiences.

So, after reading the Criminal Pardons Application, and considering his references to victimhood and murder at the hands of the law; also that he was Lilly's only known survivor, who likely made all her funeral arrangements, including ordering her stone-what are the chances that the inscription has nothing to do with his extreme belief system?

Although an investigation into the apparently colorful life of Elmer L. Gray is unquestionably warranted, I believe the mystery behind his wife's strange epitaph is finally solved.
According to the reports, she and Elmer married, both at an older age, both for a second time. It would be nice to find accounts of what their life was like together, and before they married.

I have been doing some reasearch on Lilly Gray. This is somethings I have found
`Richelle Hawk is the person that has dug the deepest in to finding about what this grave meant and this is mostly the in formation she found

~ Lilly's/Lily's husband's name is Elmer Gray
~ Well on the grave it says she her name is Lilly and was born on June 6, 1881 but in the cemetary sexton's records say that her name is Lily and she was born on June 4, 1880
~Richelle Hawk found some records for an Elmer L.(Lewis) Gray's criminal Pardons Application in 1947. Also found a 1901 Odgen standard newspaper clipping in which a man named Elmer Gray was arrested and sentenced to five days on the rock pile for stealng an umbrella valued at $3.50, from the Pain and Hurst company. No way of knowing if it's the same Elmer Gray, but date and age seems to fit
-quesions about this whole thing that never were answered-
~ If this Elmer Gray even though being a petty criminal be the beast it infers to?
~Who was the person the requested the epitaph?
~Was it purposely changed from June 4, 1880 to June 6, 1881

Thamk you for taking the time to reply to my message. I will folow up the informaton you have supplied. Unfortunately I do not seem to be able to find out what appened to John W Brown before he turns up in Utah. I have a death certificate for Laura Brown (in Wales, 1871) which names John walklet brown as her father but the questions remains as to whether he is the same John W(alklet)Brown who (with his wife also called Ann and children frederick, orenzo Snow and Laura) all dissappear from all Wales censuses after 1851. Laura and Frederick both died in Wales in 1871 and Lorenzo Snow first appears in 1881 as a married man. It would fit with John Walklet Brown being their father and going to Utah in the late 1850's hence no more Wales census appearances. Also the child born in 1852 being named Lorenzo Snow suggests a connection with Latter Day Saints. However I still can't prove it!
Thanks again for information

John W. Brown, a lawyer, and his second wife, Elizabeth Couzens Lowe Brown moved to Parowan from Toquerville, Kane (now Washington) County in 1868 following the death of his wife Ann Liggenstorfer in 1865 and son Samuel Richard Brown in 1866. Information from the New Family Search and a history by Ila Bauer. John died in Parowan, Iron, County in 1896.

I am trying to find out if W John Brown (buried in Parowan) and John Walklet Brown (possibly my great, great grandfather) were the same man. I know that John Walklet brown had a daughter Laura born 1856 who died in 1871 in Wales. John Walklet Brown is named on the death certificate as her father but I cannot find definite evidence that this man was the father of Lorenzo Snow Brown born 1852 (my great grandfather) or of Frederick Brown born 1849 died 1871.
Any help or info would be appreciated

Here is another quickly compiled list of surnames (including what appear to be maiden names) taken from the Emery Cemetery headstone photos recently taken. The names in parentheses were listed on the cemetery site map, but I couldn't find headstones for them -- some headstones were missing and others were too weathered to read.

Abelin
Adams
Addley
Albers
Albrechtsen
Allen
Allred
Andersen
Anderson
Averett
Beal
Beers
Blackburn
Bolyn
Boss
Bramwell
Brinkerhoff
Broderick
(Bryant)
Bundersen
Bunderson
Burns
Burr
(Campbell)
Carter
Case
Childs
Christensen
Christiansen
Clark
Clayton
(Cloward)
Collier
Collins
Cook
Crook
Crosby
Cryts
Cummings
Davis
DeLange
DeLeon
DeMill
Duzett
Edwards
Englestead
Evans
Foote
Forbes
Foster
Fox
Funk
Furgason
Gibby
Gowdy
Haddenham
(Hager)
Hansen
Hardy
Hart
Hatch
Helm
Henningson
Hersh
Hess
Hewitt
Hillard
Hoblit
Holt
Horrocks
Jackson
Jacobsen
Jensen
Johnson
Jolley
Jones
Jorgensen
Jumper
Keele
LaRee
Larsen
Larson
Lee
Lemmon
Lettus
Lewis
Lindquist
Littley
Long
Mangum
Marchant
(Marrs)
Maxfield
McBroom
McBroon
McGrath
McKinney
Meyer
Miller
Milo
Minchey
Mitchell
Mortensen
Neilsen
Neilson
Nelson
Nielsen
Nielson
Olsen
Ottosen
Overlade
Oviatt
Peacock
Pearce
Petersen
Peterson
Pettey
Petty
Porter
Post
(Price)
Pulley
Quinn
Radcliff
(Redd)
Rendle
Reynolds
Robinson
Romero
Rowley
(Scow)
Seavers
(Sherman)
Simonsen
Smith
Snow
Sorensen
Sorenson
Staley
Stevens
Stevenson
Stovall
Stringham
Sundstrom
(Sweeny)
Taylor
Thomas
(Thompson)
Torgersen
Torgerson
(Wacaster)
White
Wickman
Willard
Williams
Worthington

Emery, Mayfield & Levan headstone photos available

I spent a couple of days photographing every single headstone (including the backsides if they contained relevant genealogical information) located within the Levan, Mayfield and Emery (new and old) cemeteries. The photos were shot using the max resolution my camera would allow for the best clarity possible when enlarged -- some of the headstones were VERY weathered and difficult to read.

Because of my hectic schedule, it will be an exceptionally long time before I'll be able to organize, extract and post the data and photos. If one of you has the time and is interested in doing this work, let me know.

-Julie

Re: Lilly E. Gray!

One explanation for what is written on her headstone could be this: Before modern psychology/medicine, those who would now be considered insane or have mental illnesses, would back in the olden days before our modern 21st century, have been considered by the Christian community (especially the Catholic faith at the time) as demoniacally possessed. Could it be possible that Lilly E. Gray simply had a mental illness that was thought to be demonic possession by the overpowering and dominating religious community that most likely surrounded her? Take a look at the Salem Witch Trials. Do you REALLY believe all those young girls where witches? Or was the religious community at the time too narrow minded to see that they most likely were not witches, but bored girls who wanted to have something to do so they played a "game" or prank on their community with deadly results? So anyway, just thought I would try to give a new view that I have not seen anyone bring up yet about Lilly E. Gray.
