Hi Michael, well, to say the least this has been a fun search! I enjoy helping folks when I can... kinda pay it forward, so many have helped me.

Found! Yes, confirmed with Newport Cemetery Commission that West Derby Cemetery is now part of East Main Street as stated by someone earlier Newport annexed West Derby about 1917. To make it easier in the future I will request Find A Grave to add an AKA.

Pictures taken today and are being snail mailed to me as the person does not do computer!! I promise to post them on the Memorial at Find A Grave and you are free to use... no copyright by myself or photographer in Vermont.

Joshua is in Plot 78 A with some other folks. Bethia (Church) Greenleaf is with him and there are four other stones that are hard to read.
Enjoy...
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=10...

Oh, I also found his son Abiah & wife Eugenah on Find A Grave... link requested.

Hope this helps to clarify the recent confusion over the location of the West Derby Cemetery.

The following has been requested of Find A Grave:
Please add "AKA West Derby Cemetery" to the existing

East Main Street Cemetery
East Main Street
Newport
Orleans County
Vermont, USA
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=19...

West Derby village, and portions of the village of Newport became the newly formed city of Newport in 1917. The West Derby Cemetery formerly located in West Derby, became a portion of the East Main Street Cemetery in Newport, Vermont.

Interactive map and GPS data: (already on site)
GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 44.94285, Longitude: -72.19876

Verified by City Clerk referral to Cemetery Commission.
http://www.newportvermont.org/cityclerktreas.php

Widipedia - Derby, Orleans County, Vermont
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derby,_Vermont

Michael:

The answer to your query about the location of the West Derby Cemetery. It is in fact what is now called the East Main Street cemetery in the city of Newport.

The City of Newport has a certified true copy of a vital record index card dated Dec 12, 1919 which shows East Main as the burial place for a Joshua Church.

In an aarlier post to one of your queries I gave you some research information, quite long. I probably should have wrote that all the cemeteries on the East side of the lake were, in there early days part of West Derby, Salem or Derby. The only one of the ten that I wrote about that was not in that area was the Holebrook cemetery often referred to as the Lake Road Cemetery, it is on the West side of the lake.

I also wrote that the list for those buried in East Main did not contain your Joshua for reasons stated. On Edit I think there was another individual who worked on that effort or is familiar enough with it to possible answer a question or two. That individaul is Ernestine Pepin, EMail erp@together.net or the contact may be made through the Memphremagog Historical Society.

Hey Lisa, thanks for the reply! Yesterday (Fri the 9th) I spoke with the Newport Town Clerk. West Derby was the old name before being annexed to Newport (unofficial information).

Very graciously she did a look-up for me and called me back she said they have records back to 1857. Her search revealed there was no burial in East Street Cemetery.

She recommended that I call the Derby Town Clerk on Monday as they are closed on Friday.

I have the phone # and will do so and post any results here.

This man died 2 months, 10 days after returning from the Civil War and deserves research for his descendants.

It's possible that the cemetery has disappeared, but I think you are on the right track to be looking at one of the cemeteries in Newport. There are burials from the 1800's in this cemetery, but West Derby became part of Newport in 1917. I've been looking for a map that might help, and came up with this

http://www.livgenmi.com/1895/VT/County/orleans.htm

Someone familiar with the area today could probably make a comparison between this map and a current day map, and determine if the East Main Cemetery was originally in West Derby. It seems likely to me.

Hope this helps.

Lisa

Seeing that you've not had a "local" response, perhaps a more appropriated board for you to querry would be Orleans County, VT.
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ver...

TIP: Word your Subject line to reflect a resident of Orleans County, -elsewise the board admin might transfer a Cemetery querry back here!!!
--just my 2cents worth...
Hi Michael, hope this helps... most likely you've seen some of the links...

Here is a site provided by the VT GenWeb... excellant with GPS, Towns, & a big green map in the upper right hand corner so you can see the realtivity of the towns -west-east-.
http://www.nekg-vt.com/Cemeteries%20of%20VT/orleans.htm

If he mustered out as the entry here from Ancestry.com CW Soldier records state, "Mustered Out Company H, 15th Infantry Regiment Vermont on 5 Aug 1863 at Brattleboro, VT." he had a long trip home to Orleans county all the way to the Canadian boarder by the time he died on Sept 10, 1863.

Are other CHURCH family buried in any one cemetery? I did not find him on FindAGrave, but there are many other Church in Orleans county.

The Vermont Old Cemetery Assoc. may be able to help if no one here has an answer.
http://www.voca58.org/

Joshua Church is also found on this site, if you get a pic of his stone, you might consider supplying them with a copy!
Perhaps the Calais Historical Society could help. The only person that I know there would be Erlene Leonard. She lives in East Calais, drop her a line; no, i don't know her phone number or if she even has one.

Mo

Rutland County: Mt. Tabor, Wallingford, etc.

Hello,

I'm looking for the burials of a few of my relatives. First I am looking for my ancestor, Amy J. Thompson Tarbell. She was born 12 Feb 1807 in Chester, VT and died 7 Jan 1858 in Mt. Tabor. I do not know where she is buried. She is not buried with her husband, Corbet, who is buried in Londonderry.

Secondly, I am looking for James Avidon Sawtell (18 Jun 1826 - 11 Dec 1911) and his wife, Amy Julietta Tarbell Sawtell (25 Jun 1826 - 5 Mar 1892). They were both born in Chester, and I believe both of them died in Wallingford. They also lived for a time in Mt. Tabor. I am not sure where they are buried and I am hoping someone could help me find that out.

Thank you!

Thank you for the hint. I travelled to Rices Mills and the Jackman cemetery. Found Levi's headstone, photographed it and uploaded it to Find A Grave. The inscription is illegible and brief. I had to find his name with my fingers after which I could barely read it. It starts (3 lines) "In memory of Levi Parker", I could not make out the next two lines, I imagine they are a simple date of death.

Rices Mills is an interesting place, I could find no humans there - even at the farmers whose field the cemetery is in. I stopped at quite a few houses in my search - no people.

There are three other Parker headstones visible, George, his daughter Hattie (his wife is missing) and a civil war vet. All of these have been loaded onto Find-a-Grave. They are all next to one another as though a family group.

Thanks for sharing the info on Hosea Brown and some of the Wheelers. Lydia A. Hawkins married Hosea Brown; that was the Hawkins connection for our family. Would that book be available anywhere? There was a Joseph Brown that owned a sawmill in Calais but we're not sure if it is Hosea's father. Several mysteries here for the family!

Rutland Co.: Fair Haven or Poultney cemeteries, abt 1880-1920

So, I have some more family in the area that I can't find any death information for. The Pitkin family had a hardware store in Fair Haven, "Pitkin Bros.". I can not find any cemetery listing for them online. I found the parents' headstones in Poultney, where they resided, but nothing so far for the children.

I am specifically looking for William W. Pitkin and his wife Sarah E. Hamilton Pitkin. I estimate William died between 1880-1900. Sarah died in 1920. I would assume they are buried somewhere in Fair Haven, but possibly in Poultney. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hartland Cemetery, Windsor County, VT, database update

We just completed a major update to the Hartland Historical Society Cemetery Database, adding more than 600 new names, bringing our total to more than 4,000. Most of the new names are in the Hartland Village Cemetery, but we've added to the others too. In addition, we have added and updated much of the information and added pictures for many of the people we already had listed.

ref: http://www.hartlandhistory.org then click on the Cemeteries button toward the top.

Using Google Earth to find cemeteries - handy inst.

Not new to most of you, I'm sure, but have helped a few in the recent past that did not know about this handy tool.

If you do not have Google Earth, you must down load it first.
--Play with it, it is a fantastic tool and you can walk by many a cemetery if in a densely populated area!!

**If you have GoogleEarth, here's inst. on how to turn on the *Cemetery Layer*
-> when opened is found under ->
Layers,
Primary Database,
More,
Place Categories,
Places of Worship,
Cemeteries (check the box).
This step then reveals all cemeteries for the area by showing a Yellow/Gold Pine Tree with a tiny headstone to the right!!! Works Great!!!
--Note: Experience has shown some Private land cemeteries do not show up :( sorry.
--Note: Panaramio Photo often has uploaded photos of the area sm boxes, click to open.
--Note: in the lower left hand corner of the main GoogleEarth frame see the "Imagery Date: x/x/20xx if you click the Clock Icon it will reveal a time line!

-hope this helps someone new to Cemetery Searching!!
Sue
