Re: SATTIS CEMETERY, North of Charleston, WV - WHO HOLDS RECORDS?

To my knowledge, the court house should have records. Here is some history on the cemetery and surrounding property. The Sattis Cemetery use to be the Chandler Family Cemetery as it was owned by a close friend of mine's great grand-father. That is why Orchard Manor in Charleston is called that because the property used to be used as an apple orchard until the property was taken by the county during the Great Depression. I am not sure if anyone if a private individual owns it now or if the county does. If it is owned by the county, it would be Kanawha County and the records of who is buried there should be in the Charleston Court House. I know that my close friend was asked by his aunt if he wanted to be the caretaker and at the time, he was not able to take care of the property.

Not knowing if you will be driving in from the east or west, but when you arrive in Grafton, get on Main Street. It runs along the river. If coming from the west, the post office will be on the right on this street. Drive to Bridge Street and turn right. If coming from the east, drive to Bridge Street and turn left. Go across the bridge and turn back left onto Barret Street/Knottsville Road. Continue on Knottsville Road about 5 miles. You will come to a sign for the Knottsville/Grafton Church. Turn left toward the church. In about 1/4 mile you will come to a T-road on the left, just before you get to the church. The church will be on the right. Turn left onto this T-road. On the map it is called Sandy Creek Road or Millersville Road. You will come to a fork but stay left. Again the map says this is Savres Road or County Route 9/11. I don't recall any signs. You will pass a large farm on the right. The Jones Homestead is approximately 1/4 miles past this farm on the left. The barn is falling down and close to the road. The house was uninhabited when we were there and a little further off the road. There is a drive between the house and the barn and the Jones family monument if barely visible between the house and the barn. It is in a pasture field behind the house. There was no one around when we were there, so we simply parked the car and walked to the monument in the pasture. If you continue another 1/4 mile along this road, it makes a sharp left curve. The first house on the left after the curve is the Duvall residence. Mrs. Duvall grew up on the farm where the monument is located and was receptive to us when we stopped to ask for information about the homestead.
Jacob and Dinah were my 4th great grandparents. I have a letter hand written in 1835 by Samuel Jones, Jacob and Dinah's son (and my 3rd great-grandfather) to my great-grandfather and mother (their daughter and son-in-law) in Indiana. Samuel Jones and his wife, Rachel, moved to Indiana shortly after this letter was written. Finding the Jacob Jones Homestead was a very real treasure hunt for us. Do not hesitate to write if you have more questions.

We visited Grafton in February and were able to find the Jones homestead with the help of a postal worker who had been there long enough to have a general idea where we might look. I will send you the directions when I get back home tonight and am able to look at my notes. Even with the help of the lady at the post office, it was quite by chance that we happened to be looking the right direction when we drove by the homestead. The monument placed by family members in 1900 is barely visible from the road between the house and barn. Mr. Forman's daughter, who grew up on this farm lives just down the road about 1/2 mile and was able to give us some additional information. Her husband is the man who constructed the fence around the monument. They told us the exact gravesite is unknown but the monument was erected to honor their memory in the pasture field on this homestead farm. The original cabin is no longer standing but they knew where it had been and would have taken us there but the weather was so bad that day that we felt we could not ask them to do that. Nevertheless, It was an exciting find! If you are looking for any of the Luellen/Lewellyn connections, I can also direct you to the Forks of Cheat Church near Morgantown which the Luellen's helped to found.

Have you gotten any response on this? I see it is a couple of years old. G.M. Dallas Thorn was my gg grandfather. He bought Ciggens Hollow from his father, who is, you are right, Dr. AYD Thorn. I am writing a rather substantial story on the family. Ciggins Hollow plays into it. I have a ciggins story that I will share. that story of the gold there was my dad's favorite - as well as Dallas thorn and his son, Harry - my great grandfather.

Old Cemetery near Century

Frederick Bullough and wife Mary Crilley Bullough) from England, were buried in Century Cemetery. Mary died Jan 31, 1930 and Fred, Nov 8 1949.

I heard their was a cemetery in Century behind the OLD COAL mine shaft on the side of the hill. Has this cemetery a specific name, has it been transcribed, and are there still tombstones there?

I also think some of their sons are buried at Mt. Vernon Memorial cemetery about 1/2 way between Philippi and Century. I found this cemetery on Find a Grave, but no Bullough names are there.

My sister-in-law did not notify us of the funeral or the cemetery. If you can assist us in finding his final resting place that would bring us some closure.

Thank you.

Unfortunately I do not know their faith. I do know a few of them are said to have worked in the mines but I have found nothing as of yet to substantiate that. I have looked up the deaths on the state site ... some aren't found at all and some have very minimal information. I am in touch with a couple relatives who are still in the state but they know less than I do.

I thank you very much for your response and I will do some more searching as you suggested. I appreciate any help I can get :-)

The names are Antal, Spotilla, Horvath, Toth

Shelly

They probably came to WV to work on the Railroad or the Coal Mines. Do you know their faith? Many church cemeteries around. Type in WV Coal Camps and read the towns, also the State of WV has an excellent site to look up death, marriage and birth records. Listing your last name will help your search, as you may still have relatives in WV. Hope this helps you.

Hi Phil,

I know this is late but, in case you haven't found the information yet, here it is:

Stanaford Cemetery Association
P.O. Box 268
Stanaford, WV 25927

You can verify this by looking at this photo, although you may have to click on it to enlarge it enough to read the address:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pis&PIcrid...

As you can see on the sign, the Secretary/Treasurer is Irene Bragg who is my aunt, but as she is aging, her daughter Mary Lilly actually handles the account now. Checks should be made payable to Stanaford Cemetery Assocation, and be sure to include your return address so Mary can send you a receipt. If you have any other questions or need further information, I'm sure Mary will be happy to help.

I am wondering if there were any cemeteries that the Hungarian groups used back in the early 1900s in Mingo/Logan Counties. I have some graves I'm searching for but can't seem to locate any information on where these folks are buried. I have not yet been able to take a trip to WV to conduct some research. I know the dates these folks passed but not where they are buried and WV records are sparse online.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!!

Shelly

Hello,

I am trying to find a cemetery called Koff Cemetery. A West Virginia death record states Koff as the Place Of Burial. Googling found me another death certificate of a Koff Cemetery in Newburg (Preston County?) but nothing else pops up.
Does anyone know of this cemetery or what it may be called otherwise?
Would definately appreciate any help with this.
Thanks,
Mark
