1851 Canada Census

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me with this.

In the 1851 Canadian Census for Hibbert, Perth County, Ontario, there is a column that states "Residence if out of limits".

I have a whole family of McCanns living here in 1851: Arthur, Catherine, Thomas, Hugh, Patrick, John, Catherine and Peter. Under the column mentioned above, Patrick has United States written in the column; the rest have it blank.

I'm trying to figure out if this means he is living in the U.S. or if he immigrated from the U.S.

If anyone can help, I'd sure appreciate it.
