I would think that there is a good chance that they are the same people.
As for the "wrong" information ie spelling on the census' - Quebec is mainly a French speaking province and English surnames could be spelled quite differently. It all depends on whether the census taker was English or French speaking. Of course, the same can be said for any English speaking census taker mis-spelling French surnames.
