Older census records?

Surnames: McDonald, MacDonald
How far back did they keep census records in the Nova Scotia? I have traced my family (Mc/MacDonald) back to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada around 1700. I need to know how to find records that old. Any help would be appreciated!
