gathering census records on Excel

I have over 200 census records cited on my family tree that are handwritten on blank forms. I am trying to write an Excel spreadsheet that will allow me to enter the data and do searches, comparisons, etc. Has anyone else attempted this, and do you have a template that is working? Any assistance would be appreciated!
