My ancestor, Martin M. Lewis of Monroe, Mississippi has his father's birthplace listed as Canada. My cousins say that his father was probably not born in Canada because Southerners at that time wanted to hide their Southern heritage. I find this explanation hard to believe as Martin Lewis listed his mother's birthplace as South Carolina and his wife listed her parents birthplace as South Carolina.
Another explanation is that the census taker was drunk. Then why is Martin's the only one whose father is listed as Canadian in the county?
