1870 US Census - District Maps?

I'm trying to find out which parts of New York City are represented by the different districts/wards. I don't see street names on the census records I'm looking for. I know the general area my ancestors lived in, but am not certain which records pertain to them because I can't tell the address. Does anyone know if there are explanations of where the districts are? Freebmd.org has excellent explanations of UK marriage, birth, death district information. Something like that would be helpful for the 1870 US Census in New York City.
Thanks!!

I am in the process of locating my relatives in the federal census'. Many of them have a number in the farm schedule column (1900-1930 census') Is that information that would be of value for me to see? If so, how do I go about finding it? So far I've not been able to find it on Ancestry or anyplace else on the web.

I see in the "New records on Ancestry.com" section of the home page that there has been an update to the 1900 US Census. How can I find out what was updated? I'm hoping for some updates for Louisiana, for example, and I don't want to waste time if the updates pertain only to New York.

I have a few gaps in my lines for some people and I'm not sure if they were missed in the census or if the records on ancestry.com are incomplete.

Sorry, in advance, if this question has been asked and answered numerous times.

Regards,
Gwen

Illegible occupation for 1900 census

The 1900 census for the Reed family of Manchester, Vermont has a puzzling occupation filled out. One of the grown sons in the family, William Ebenzer, has an occupation which to me looks like Supt Telrsoopie. That is probably not his occupation, at least not in english.
The link to the original record is http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbi... .
The page description is http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1900usfedcen&a... .
Can anyone help me decipher this handwriting? It may help to know that eleven years earlier he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.

This is probably a very basic question ... but is it possible to search through US census returns by address?

I'm confused over the distinction between "house number or farm" and "dwelling number" on the US census forms. For a couple of returns that I looked at, there are entries in both columns, so I'm unclear which one is the actual house number. Can someone explain the two fields to me? There is a third column listing order of houses visited. I just ignore that one.

I'm not sure these fields on all census forms. The one I'm currently looking at is 1910

I posted this on the census board under the Ancestry site but it seems to be pretty dead.

A few days ago I found a target family in the 1900 federal census. I wrote down some key facts about the family members but failed to bookmark or save the record.

Today I can not find the record in the census despite numerous search attempts and doing a "house-to-house" search on the image data in the target enumeration district as well as about 80 percent of the whole county so far!

Is it possible that Ancestry has "updated" the 1900 database and somehow left out some records?

Yes, I am to blame for not being careful and saving the record but I was trusting that, found once, I would be able to use the search tools to easily get back to the record.

Does anyone have access to an alternate source for the 1900 census (like Heratige) to help me reconnect with this record? Or do you have any other advice?

Here is the information that I recorded:

Beat 1
Goldbranch, Tallapoosa,AL
J T Duett (8/1857)	42	AL	GA	GA
M A (wife)	39	AL	GA	GA
Maggy F (dau)	10	AL	AL	AL
Tillie R (dau)	6	AL	AL	AL
Herman J (son)	3	AL	AL	AL

I do not think that I was looking at another census year because the age matches the date.

However, they are not fillable online. The user must fill in by hand and scan them back in to keep them as electronic records. And they wouldn't be searchable.

Creating fillable fields on one of these forms would take me some time. I had Adobe Acrobat v7 which I don't think provides an automated way of doing that but someone says v8 has a tool called Form Field Recognition.

Does anyone know if there are fillable census forms available online in PDF format?

I have been researching the Barclay and Bricker families in the 1860 US census for Greensburg PA. I expected to see the first page of retrieved data start with household 1, as in the 1870 census, instead of number 58. Is this more likely to be a problem with the scan, or with the original records?

Is there a way to search census for combination of names in households ?

I have an ancestor Jeremiah Patterson who showed up w/ his parents in the Gilmer County, GA 1850 census, and whose wife shows up there (Gilmer Co) in 1880, but remarried. Family history suggests that my ancestor died around 1872. So the intact family of my ancestor, his wife, and their children, should be on the 1860 and 1870 census somewhere. But years of looking haven't found them. The wife was from TN (maiden name Davis), and the part of GA they were from is near NC, so I have tried to focus on NC, GA, and TN.

My belief is that they may be in another household and the enumerator gave them the last name of that head of household. I have several instances of that with other ancestors. So it would be really helpful if I could search for the combination of first names - in this case Jeremiah, Elizabeth, William, John, Mary, and Andrew.

But all I can find to do is to search the names individually - and that is the approach I've been taking for 6 years. I could do that for 6 more given the fact that those aren't exactly uncommon names - even when you filter by birth date ranges and/or state of birth.

Any ideas from this group? Thanks!

Pam

I know they use the same index so that will be no help.

They had six children: August 'Gustine', Martin J, Charles, John F, Amelia and Margaret. Some of these children are still alive (2008) but they didn't know much about their ancestry.

The family moved to Skowhegan, Maine at some point. They didn't have very much money growing up. Can anyone point me in the direction of more information of this family?

Thank You, Linda

It's always been very frustrating, to me at least, to find ancestors in census records. I understand that names were often spelled phonetically but I also see stupid transcriptions of names too.
Why doesn't Ancestry hire people who have some knowledge of genealogy who can at least make a better educated guess at what the name actually is.
I saw one this week in which a name was transcribed as "Anus"...really!

I've made several hundred (more likely well over a thousand) requests for additional names to these records and we have to PAY to search these bad transcriptions???
It takes away from research time to submit these corrections so others can find the people they are looking for.
The least Ancestry could do is to give those of us who are willing to submit full names where there were only initials or changes some extra 'free' service for doing them a favor.
I found the listing in the index here, but I don't have access to the images. I'm currently going image by image through the Heritage Quest site instead (they don't have that area indexed yet), but there are so many images to go through. I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me exactly which district in Kings County to look in.

Entry in 1860 Arkansas census lists place of birth for Mary Sanders as "Indian Country". Her DOB would have been around 1833. What areas would have been considered "Indian Country" at that time? Would this mean that she was Native American or just possibly a pioneer child born there? The 1870 entry for her looks like place of birth is recorded as "CN"--what is this?

Searching Brayman in Clinton Valley in Pontiac Michigan

I've done my research on the message boards and the net and see that Michigan prohibits the release of past medical records even if the patient is deceased. I'm searching for Effner Brayman, DOB 25 May 1915, DOD 31 May 1971. I was able to find him in the SSDI and his parents, but there is a lot of missing information. Father is George Brayman and Maggie (Worden) Brayman. Effner's living son Timothy didn't know a thing about him other than he spent his life and even died in the Clinton Valley psychiatric hospital (previously Eastern Michigan Assylum for the Insane and later Pontiac State Hospital). 1900 census shows Maggie and George, 1910 shows Maggie, George, and Millie Bryman (only 1 a), can't find 1920, and 1930 shows Maggie and "Elmer" Brayman, but the original document says Effner. It also says that Maggie is widowed with only Effner living with her - both George and Millie have disappeared by 1920 since no census was found. I'm so stuck! Need help with the hospital info and finding further on Maggie, George, and Millie. Please??

I was surprised to notice that when I looked up my great grandparents I also noticed that just two families down the page were my grandparents, not related to the other grandparents yet anyway. Does the census page show people that all live on the same street, house after house?

Thanks for your input everyone- you've been wonderful ancestry community!

Julie Pagliarulo

1920 Lookup of John and Roxie Hughes

In 1900 John was in Caddo Louisiana with his first wife and two oldest daughters

In 1910 he was in Rockwall County Texas, PCT 3 with his second wife, Roxie, and three kids of their own, along with John's 4 from his first marriage and Roxie's two from her first marriage

In 1930 John and Roxie were living in Harrison County Texas, PCT 2, with five more of their kids and three grandchildren.

The 9 children from 1910 are nowhere to be found in 1920 or '30.

I think the Hicks living around John and Roxie in 1930 may be related to Roxie, as her maiden name was Hicks (but their's doesn't have an 's' at the end of their name).

I also was wondering if John and Edd Hughes' mother Rosetta was still living in 1920. She would be in her 70s.

Wolf Kardasch (the spelling can vary - Velv, Wulf, russian versian - Vladimir, surname - can be Kerdash/Kerdasch/Kardash). His father's name was Mordecai/Mark and mother's name was Fruma. He was born in Shpola, Ukraine (former Russia or Soviet Union) and moved to the US around 1920. He sent a letter to my family before World War II with a picture of his son. It was his son's Bar-Mitzva. By that time he had lived in Philadelphia, PA (or somewhere around). If you have any information about Wolf Kardash PLEASE let me know.

I just discovered who my g-granmother Mettler' parents are. But, I know g-grandma Mettler' mother side of the family, there is a huge family tree on the mother' side. It's the father of g-grandma that I barely know anything. Great-grandma Mettler was born H. Winifred Bell Aug 24, 1870 in Winterset, Madison Co., Iowa to Eva Ann Crosley and William A. Bell. All I have on William is that he served in the 10th Iowa Infantry, Company K in the Civil War. He was, according to g-grandma Mettler' death record) born in Bryan, Ohio which is in Williams Co. (it may be Byron, Greene Co., Oh, as that is where Winifred' daughter was born). When he signed up for the War in 1861 he is listed at 18 years of age, with a residence in Des Moines. He married Eva Ann Crosley Jan 3, 1867 Madison Co., Iowa. He looks to have died before Jan 17, 1879 as his civil War Pension has been filed by his widow Eva for their daughter. I've tried looking for William and his family in the 1850/60 and 1870 census' at Ancestry.com and other sites, but i have no membership, so i cannot see the full info. If anybody would like to lend me their eyes in this search, I'd be very appreciative.

Hi,

If a farm schedule number is listed, can i then find this farm schedule somewhere?

In the right margin (to the right of the pre-printed line number) an additional number is written, i.e. "036" - what does this refer to?

Thanks
Erik
Denmark

What Is The Best Way to Seek Census Lookups - This Board or Individual State Boards?

In the days of yore, (showing my age), the individual state approach would have been the way. But with the internet, would it be better just to seek assistance at this one board or the old each state of interest?

Thanks,

Michael McTeer
29 Palms, CA

1850 US Fed census....deaf, dumb, insane, blind, pauper or convict section

In one of my branch families, in the column deaf or dumb, insane, blind, pauper or convict.....
One relative, a 15 year old male had a '1'
and a 12 year old female had a '5'.

What does this mean ? I tried figuring it out and there was no way the the 12 year old girl with the 5 could have been a convict so that theory was shot. The 15 year old male could have deaf or dumb and he is not listed on any census' that I can find to verify this. Nor is the 12 year old girl who later married my 3x great grandfather marked on any further census records in these categories.

So, is anyone able to help me with these numbers ?

I'd appreciate it greatly !

Lori Callaway
callaway525@msn.com

Place of birth -- Tonza -- does anyone know where it was?

Surname: FELLER
Location of census: Kearny, Hudson, New Jersey
In 1910, his place of birth is listed as Hungary
In 1920, his pob is Tonza (someone else added "Nor")
In 1930, his pob is Yugoslavia

Native language is always German.

I can't find any place called Tonza. The Ancestry.com indexer listed Norway as the place of birth but I don't know how the census supervisor, or whoever it was that added Nor, would even know where it was. There are lots of other corrections in the opposite-slanting handwriting, so I know it wasn't the original enumerator.

I've included an image of the name. It's pretty easy to read but was it really in Norway? I can understand the Hungary/Yugoslavia relationship, but Norway!?

TIA
Jo

Does anyone know whether Ancestry plans to ever add the US Non-population census records? I live 15 minutes from a NARA location, and naturally, the roll I need is not there (according to the NARA website). It would be terrific to be able to access these from Ancestry.

Also, does anyone know other sources for these schedules? I need to look over more than one roll as I have limited information on the person I'm seeking...

I am have problems looking up relatives in 1900 census on either side of my mothers family. On her fathers side I cant find any John M. Nelson in Leelanau County, Michigan but I can find the family in 1910 census. This a big family on that side (12kids,2 were twins). I know that my grandfathers family lived there since before 1995. On her mothers side I can also find the 1910 census in Berrien County, Benton Harbor Twnsp, but nothing before that. I know the lived in Salinas, California in 1895 as my grandmother was born there and I know they left to go to Michigan with Benjamin Purnell to form the Israelite House of David sometime in the early 1900 shortly after my greatuncle was born. Could someone please help me or if there is anyone that had relatives that was involved with the group, please contact me as its a big wall that I have come too in my search of my realtives

Where would be the most best place to look for a birth record for a person born at sea?

The family story is that my great-grandfather, Richard Hughes, was born on the boat coming over from Ireland. Some Census records show birthplace as "Pennsylvania" but the 1920 Census shows "at sea Nova Scotia" and and I saw another that showed "Newfoundland". I'm a bit at a loss as to where to look first or where to concentrate my efforts.

Suggestions on where to search appreciated.

On the 1860 census, for example, the first column has "dwelling/house numbered in order of visitation". The next column is "families numbered in order of visitation".
If one family is listed with a number in the first column and second column and the next family only has a number in the second column does this mean those families were all living together in the same house? Could it have been an apartment building and they didn't number individual units?
I could not find a street name on that census.
Julia and John had my father, Joe Wheeler Powell. I always have known of Theodosha Pruitt and John Henry Powell, not Julia Pruitt. But on the name admendment, is shows birth record as Joe Wheeler Powell and we know him as JD Powell.
We are so bothered by this news! Now what do we expect? Did Julia Pruitt birth my father or did Theodosha Pruitt? The doctor who signed this was J. A. Wheeler. See, the Wheeler name is a doctor! We do not know why any of this came about for my father. He was born Nov. 16, 1914. We see his many names on Ancestry.com, J. Newman Powell, J.D. Powell, Newman J. Powell, so our mother was Loveda Eggleston, B: Feb. 22, 1920, Kingfisher, OK. Dad was B: in DeKalb, AL. John Henry Powell, GA and Theodosha & Julia was born in AL.

Absolutely can't find someone in 1880 Census, what is most likely?

That is, with nothing resembling a good guess

1-Not looking hard enough

2-They were not indexed or skipped in some manner during the transcription process, for whatever reason

3-Just ommitted entirely during the actual 1880 enumeration

4-Could be any number of things, so you might be out of luck

5-Since your great-grandparents were married in June 1880, they might have been between "residences". Is that a possibility?

I've tried every search variable I can think of.
Factoring inaccurate birthdates, birthplaces, name variants (best I could, which might not be very good) even initials. I have gone to the county level, that I assume with confidence these people are in, I have gone statewide. I am about 99% sure they are in Texas, should I go broader? I've done nationwide searches of course, just not as intensely.

I am using the Ancestry, FamilySearch, and Heritage Quest search engines.

It isn't uncommon at all, of course, to not be able to find someone. Shouldn't you be able to muster up a good guess, or a somewhat good guess? I can make guesses for most of my brickwalls, to some degree or another but this one has become my #1 goal because it seems like it should be there.

Just asking for general advice, suggestions etc.

Looking for my great great grandparents (my direct paternal line). I can't find them together or apart or otherwise. They appear in the Johnson County Texas marriage book, married on June 10th, 1880.

Her name was Josephine Stone born March 1861 in KY. her parents are there in Johnson County, Texas, as is a couple of siblings. His name was Joseph G Bunch born (according to the 1900 Census) in Apr 1852 in MS. His birth date isn't verified anywhere else, so I've tried my best to account for it during searches. Her birthdate is verified, although I've accounted for it as well. +/- 2, 5, 10, 20 whatever. I've left it blank, etc.

Just been looking for a couple of years and thought I'd ask if anyone had a suggestion. I came to the conclusion about a year ago that they were skipped but then I read an article that said not very many people were skipped in the 1880. And her parents are there, I don't know his parents, or siblings, so that is no help.

I have spent many hours in search of William Zeller in the 1870 census with no luck. I have located the family in the 1860 and 1880 censuses in the same location, but have been unsuccessful in finding them in the 1870 census using a page-by-page search.
I was wondering if census/social security information on a person will tell what sort of job a person held during their life?

1870 US Census Lookup Request: Lars Andersson family near Bishop Hill, Illinois(?)

A friend is trying to solve an ancestor puzzle and I suggested a lookup in the 1870 census might help.

The family consisting of:

"Bunsa" Lars Andersson (b. 7 Apr 1827)
wife Karin (b. 27 Jun 1822)
s. Erik (b. 5 Jan 1855)
s. Lars (later, "Louis") (b. 29 Apr 1858)
d. Karin (b. 15 May 1860)
s. Anders (b. 25 Feb 1863)
d. Anna (b. 9 Aug 1865)

emigrated from Venjan parish (Kopparberg county), Sweden in May 1869. They reportedly arrived in the U.S. in June and traveled to Illinois with the intention of residing at the Swedish community of Bishop Hill in Henry county. The story goes that they stayed at Bishop Hill for two years and then moved to Minnesota. I found them in the 1880 census at Isanti county (Maple Ridge twp) Minnesota as "Bunsa L. Anderson", with wife, Karin, and two of the children: Louis and Karin.

Therein lies the mystery: what happened to the other 3 kids? Not even a hint that these children even existed was ever passed down to later generations.

If the family can be located in 1870, it will narrow down the time period when the children disappeared. It's not clear whether any of the missing kids will appear in 1870; they might have perished on the boat, for instance.

I have personally searched the films of 1870 Henry county and scanned over half the townships, particularly those near Bishop Hill, but without success. Since I'd reached the point of diminishing returns, I thought I'd see if the family could be located by a lookup. Maybe they lived in a neighboring county or in Chicago. I suppose there's even a chance they were already in Minnesota by 1870 (despite family lore).

Note that "Bunsa" is what's known as a "farm name", not Lars Anderson's actual given name. Swedes from the region where Lars and family came from had a custom of prepending the name of the farm where they resided to their given + patronymic names as a way of reducing name confusion (i.e. too darn many plain-old "Lars Andersons" living in the vicinity). I don't know if he would have been recorded in the 1870 census as Lars, Bunsa, or something else.

My friend and I will greatly appreciate any help in solving this puzzle. Thanks.

Jeff
