Hello Mike,
You memtioned the book CONFEDERATES WHO DIED IN NORTHERN PRISONS AND WERE BURIED IN NATIONAL CEMETERIES. Would it be possible for you to see if Lafayette Lewis is listed? I believe he was taken to Gratiot Prison in St. Louis, then transferred to Alton, IL, where he died in 1862. I don't know if there might be other information on him in the book.
Thanks you for your time.
Nancy

Is there somewhere where I could get copies of the proceedings that sent him to Alton & Gratiot?
Maybe this board is not being looked at any longer! Just got on the net. I had a Great Uncle, Thomas J. Myers, in that prison ( captured at Honey Springs, Arkansas.)
In most Libraries they have sets of Government Document books; " War of the Rebellion.' Doesn't list names but does tell about Units (both sides) and does tell about all the Prisons! They were bad on both sides. My house was divided;
some UNION and some CONFEDERATE. The books are sure worth
looking at if searching for the truth! HAPPY READING!!

I'm late on getting in on this board but a ?. Mike , is there any signs of the Prison or a marker? If there is, I would trouble you for a picture and like Diane, I will re-emburse you! Uncle was lucky to live! I think he was a "real rebel"! On his records he was given the chance to get out of prison by giving his allegience to the US. He must
have said he would; but his record stated "DOUBTFUL"!! Was sent to other prisons. Captured July 17,1963 and stayed a prisoner til the end. Thanks for listening to a "WAR STORY"!
E-mail merriemary@earthlink.com
Snail mail: Mary Dugan 30 Holley av. apt 302B Shalimar,
Fl. 32579-1100 Thanks for a reply!

Req. Look up: John KETCHUM

Hi Mike, Noticed your post, thought I'd beg a boon... We are desperately searching for the death date & burial site of our ggggrfa. John Jackson KETCHUM, captured in Rolla, Phelps Co MO July 1862, listed as a "bushwacker". He was about 44 yrs old then & had 8 known children. He was transferred to Alton ILL, Sept 1862, then sent to Sandusky Ohio, to the Johnson Island Military Prison, an island in the Bay of Lake Erie in Nov 1862. We believe he was swooped up with the POINDEXTER Boys, of Phelps Co Mo, as they were all taken together to Johnson Island, where 13 of them were executed days after their arrival, mostly POINDEXTER fam or kin. There the trail ends for our ancestor, John Jackson KETCHUM (b 1818 TN, marr Mary Caroline ? abt 1839 TN, moved to Phelps Co MO soon after. Did he get transfered again? Or was he executed & buried on Johnson Island? There is a cemetery there, with unmarked graves & a few group markers, is this Cem listed in your book? Sorry for all the questions, but we're desperate. Thank you for your time & kindness, Yours, Kath

Find a copy of "Civil War Times Illustrated", July/August 1995, pages 58-66. The article is "A Hell On Earth" by Lonnie R. Speer. The article has a PICTURE of the "prison". It will really make you think about what your ancestor went through!

Enjoy!
