Devil Anse link to Ohio Hatfields in early 1800s?

My 3rd Great-grandmother was Peggy Hatfield in Carroll Co. OH in the early 1800s. I was wondering if anyone knew how she was kinked to Devil Anse. There was alot of intermarrying between the Hites and Hatfields in Hardin Co. OH in the early 1800s, so it gets confusing:

HITES/HATFIELD CONNECTION

CARROLL CO
8/2/1810 Michael Hites Sr. marries Peggy Hatfield

HARDIN CO.
12/27/1836 Elizabeth Hatfield marries George Hites, son of John II (brother to Michael Sr.) and Elizabeth Bowers.

4/2/1837 Catharine Hites, son of John II and Eliz Bowers, marries William Hatfield

12/7/1839 Nelson Hatfield marries Susan Hites, daughter of same

6/16/1845 John Hites III, son of same, marries Mary Hatfield

John II and Elizabeth bowers had two other children; Elizabeth and David, neither of which have any record of marrying or having children.

Hatfield & McCoy ending

My understanding from doing geneology for my husband, I learned that the feud stopped in 1897. Both families agreed to stop fighting. But in 2003 thefamilies signed a truce in Piksville,KY.

My understanding also is the feud started over the Civil War and what sides who took. Since there kin that were related to both sides this evidently created a problem. The hog story was really over a land dispute which the hog was on one side of the line creating the feud over the ownership.
The one other thing that played into the feud is that Roseanna McCoy fell in love with Johnse Hatfield and ran off with him. He left pregnant and married her cousin Nancy McCoy.
So there seems to be several things that had these families feudding.

Dear Melinda Black,
So sorry someone sent you such a unfeeling message. Now hear from someone whose family was related by marriage to both sides, let me assure you that the feud ended long before 2003. I sometimes marvel at the fact that back then when they had their summer reunions it must have been a douzie!! Hatfields and McCoys seated side by side, and I assure you this really did happen. Read, learn ask questions, that is what genealogy is all about. We must not forget our past. Yes, Melinda the feud is over, and those wonderful family reunions did happen, I am old enough to have been blessed enough to attend a few I was too young to know about the feud, and ask questions about who was who, but we all ate, drank and were merry..
Sincerely,
Ramona

My Dad's grandad was a sawmill worker for Devil Anse so when they had the reunion in Pikeville KY. Dad wanted to go one year & we where very diapointed. They had almost nothing thats why we have not been back. Dad said if they where not going to have anymore then that they might as well not have anything at all. We thought they might have some of the relatives in the park and some people saleing things & talking about old times. What about a Bluegrass & Country band & old pictures ? There needs to be more. Just my 2 cents. My Dad is now 78 & before he is gone they need more like Hillybilly days has ?
God Bless,TCB,Allen
Hatfield History

I too am trying to trace my family tree. What I have learned is that all Hatfields were originally descended from 1 family, the English Hatfields. I will certainly check out the suggested book. Does anyone have any tips on these companies that claim to be able to trace your family? There are quite a few & I am suspicious of their abilites. Any recommendations? It would appear that we are all of relation in a distant way, but then again that is probably true of a lot of Americans. Just how I & my brother are related are of great interest to me. My father, John Hatfield has moved to England. We do not speak to him & he did not speak to his father & brother (James Hatfield) at any time that I can remember. So I am pretty much on my own. I did find a record of my Grandma, Ruby's death here in Missouri, but that is as close as I have come so far. As far the question of Hatfields in Kansas, I did see a few of those listed. Interestingly, there are no records of any Hatfields any farther West of Kansas, that I have found so far. According to the death & marriage records as well as articles, it is evident that the Hatfield Clan did disperse this far & on to Kansas as the generations grew. The "American Branch" of the Hatfields originally did settle in W Virginia & branched out from there after leaving England, but my own personal relation is still a mystery. Would I be a gggggggranddaughter, niece, cousin, I do not know but want to find out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Heather Hatfield

2 years ago, my mother and I traveled to Beckley, W.Va
for a family reunion. We visited my maternal grandparents
graves at a very small but beautiful town cemetery.

I also remember coming across the grave of a woman named
America Hatfield. This cemetery was located in or around
Princeton, W.Va. It is very small and sits high atop a sloping
hill surrounded by dirt lane roads, trees and grass as far as
the eye can see.

It is a picture postcard scene in my opinion..
It brings back good memories...I just thought I would add my
two cents.

Hi my name is Angela McCoy Damron. I am looking for information about my great-grandfather John P. Mccoy. He was originally from the Matewan area. His first wife, my great-grand mother was Delphia, or Delfey Little, she was buried in Flyd County Ky. 1929. Some of the names of their children were Palmer (my grand father), Brice, Riley, Mandy, Junie, and he married again and to that union I believe Ida Mae was born. I know this is not all of his children, just all I can recall. Any information would be appreciated..Thanks!

Hatfield Pictures

My husband's great uncle recently passed away and left the family in quite a mess. In his posession was the family home which no one had entered in over 30 years. We knew the family was Hatfield descendants but now that we have uncovered a ton of pictures that were in old trunks in the attic we are more intrigued. It seems that they are descendants from Preacher Anse Hatfield. A R, or Adron Hatfield is my husband's ggggrandfather and we have a lot of pictures of him. The problem is that through all of these pictures there are no names, some dates, but mostly all the pictures are blank on the back. We know that A R moved to Boyd County, Ky from Mingo Co. I would love help in identifying any of these pictures.

My name is Robin Gannon, I was born in Mingo County, Williamson, West Virginia. I will get more detail once I contact my father. He was born in Kentucky. I believe it was my great-grandfather (maybe even grand-father) that was our original McCoy. His parents were killed in an accident and as the story goes, my grandfather's sister was already married to a Gannon and they adopted him...therefore the Gannon came in. If anyone has knowledge of this situation I would appreciate hearing it. Thank you

Anyone know of this family? E T Hatfield was married to Laura Hatfield nee Pierce and were probably in their 60's in the 1920's. The store & mill was named E.T. Hatfield & Sons, selling dry goods, notions, Groceries and produce. the letter head says shipping point Eastview,Ky. With address of Box 43 Sonora, Ky., R-1 in 1922.

I have a copy of a letter from Laura Hatfield to her brother William Francis (Frank) Pierce in that year. Laura mentions her daughter in school at Bethlehem who will be home for the summer and her sons: a one year old on april 15 ..1922 and the olther boys are 15 & 17 years old.

She mentions her little store and mill are down on the road where "the old Lee house stood" and she gets a good trade.
She mentions family members: Uncle Ves, Jimmie Skees? , Aunt Sopha B, Uncle Arron Buckles with new wife (the widow of Bill Decker), Johnie & Billie Buckels whos son died in France (WWI), Frankie Pierce going to Colorado, Will Pierce going to Inda ? this fall, etc.
Any information would be wonderful
beckyzihlman@aol.com or beckyzihlman@juno.com
Bringing the Feud Research into the 21st Century: DNA

The Hatfields and the McCoys are among the best-researched families in the USA. But, as many McCoy researchers have discovered, the origins of this family are murky. A number of McCoy families with origins in Virginia and Maryland suspect a connection to the feud family, but can't prove it. And almost every McCoy family I've run across loses the trail somewhere short of a connection to Northern Ireland and Scotland, where we presume our ancestral McCoys came from.

It occurs to me it would be a great step forward if a proven McCoy feud descendant would provide a DNA sample for any of the on-going McCoy DNA genealogy projects. There's no risk involved -- the analysis does not reveal anything about your health risks, and it is not even necessary to make any personal information public. Both Family Tree DNA and DNA Heritage are involved in these projects, and any of the other vendors can provide the same analysis.

Once the feud family's DNA markers are known, it will be possible for the families who suspect a connection to prove the matter one way or another. I believe this will advance our knowledge of the feud family, because we will finally be able to know which of the "other" families are really connected, and therefore, which clues should be given more weight.

For myself, I have two different McCoys in my background. One has been traced back to Maryland about 1790, the other was somewhere in the middle of Kentucky about 1816. That second McCoy family, unfortunately, doesn't seem to have any surviving males, so I'm afraid DNA analysis won't help. My first McCoy family, the one from Maryland, doesn't match the DNA profile of any of the 20-odd families that have been sampled so far. Eventually, I'm sure I will find the answers!

Wishing everyone patience and eventual success in your research,

John McCoy
(RealMac@aol.com)

My deceased grandmother, Iona Trisler/Trissler (maiden name), told me some years ago that she was a decendant of the Hatfield clan. Her mother, Anna Laurie Gibson (born in the 1860's in Hurricane, WV), is supposedly the link. Anna is reportedly a child of a female from William Anderson Hatfield's immediate family.
Hi Diann,
I know it has been a long time since we talked about my grandmother. Thank you for the info. The last time we emailed a few weeks later I actually went to Burnwell, KY where my mom was raised and met a relative, and he showed us the cemetary where Ray and Irene were laid to rest. I was only there less than 24 hours, but had a great time. There is something about that place that draws me there. I found out that I had missed the McCoy/Hatfield Reunion by a few weeks so I was determined to go one day. Two years later-just this june I visited my dad in Tenn and went to the reunion (by myself). Had a great time, but had a hard time getting there and had to cut the time short. I am planning to attend next year and I met some wonderful relatives there in Burnwell. I need to ask some questions about Irene's side of the family. Where did John Stafford come from and who were his parents? Do you know what happened to Lewis McCoy's first wife Afton Short who was my grandfather Ray's biological mother? I have heard a few different stories about her, but nobody wants to talk about it. Thank you for the help you've already given. thanks lisa worthey

Hi Just wandering if you know where a man named Woodrow Hatfield would fit in the family tree? Grandpa; I never met.
Question: If the McCoy's are from Kentucky and the Hatfield's from Virginia then what would my Dad Kenneth Hatfield and Uncle Walter Hatfield be doing coming from Kentucky~ Would that make them a 1/2 Hatfield/1/2 McCoy...Somethings funky there! and Dad don't like it! LOL (More so because I ask the question*)

Barbara Hatfield/Harden 0: )

My maiden name is Carter. I have no way of verifying this information with my uncle.

thanks.
This is a bit of a long shot, but I am going to try anyway. My Mother is 88 years old and from Lincoln County. Her and my grandmother, who was born in 1881, always insisted that there was a marriage between their families and the Hatfields. My Mother said when she was a child in Lincoln County she sat on Anse Hatfield's lap. I have no idea who the relative was, except that Mom thought it was a uncle of hers married to a daughter of Anse. Does anyone have any information on a marriage between any of the Hatfield children and either a McGraw or Murphy from Lincoln County? Thanks in advance for any help. I would greatly appreciate any help on this.
Thanks,
G Maphis

Dear Ramona,

Thanks for your response. The book FEUD by Waller is the best thing I've ever seeen on the real feud.

I'm in a bit of a rush right now, but if you'll email me at douglasmaynard@charter.net, perhaps we can discuss at some length the various connections between the MAYNARDS, HATFIELDS, AND MC COYS. There seem to be quite a few connections on both sides.

I'm very interested in the David Maynard you mentioned.

Remind me to send you an attachment concerning the feud and the various connections.

Doug

Andrew Boyd McCoy

My father was C. E. Porter Sr (1922-1994) and his mother was Pearl Duncan (or West) (1898-1972). Pearl was the oldest child that her mother Lydia McCoy had (1875-1967) and Lydia's father was Andrew Boyd McCoy (1837- ?).
Now, Andrew's father was Asa and his father was Samuel.
Samuel's brother was Daniel McCoy and his son was named Randolph. He was better known as "ole randle" McCoy who fathered at least 16 children by his first cousin Sarah, on of Asa's sisters. About 6 of his children were murdered by the Hatfield family in that famous fued. If any of Randolph's descendants are still living, the one's in my generation would be my full 6th cousins.

Hi,
Levica Hatfiled was my mom's grandma. My mom and her brother are the last descendants in this line, as far as I know, because my mom adopted children and her brother never had children. Does anyone have any info on this line of the Hatfields? My mom recalls very little, only some history from great-aunts. I'd be interested in anything on other children that Levica had.
