While visiting some James Family in Bryan Co., OK about 15 years ago we got on the discussion of Jessie James, the outlaw. I asked if any of them knew him and they said their grandfather had known him. I asked if when he came into the Indian Territory how the people greeted him - friend or foe? They said he brought money in and was a generous and considerate man when he visited (hid out) there. I asked them where he stayed when there. Mr.James replied that he and his man stayed in a cave and he showed me where it was. Both my father and mother's family are from that area. On my mohter's side, S. James from MO married her great aunt and was part Choctaw or Cherokee. Later, I found a newspaper article written about Jessie James that verified that he indeed did stay in what is now Bryan Co., OK so their account is probably accurate. In that article, it was mentioned that the Choctaw treasurer feared that Jessie James was going to rob him of the gold allotment money he held for the tribe. He asked the local minister to keep the money for him which he did. The James gang rode up to the ministers house one day and asked to partake in supper with them. One of his gang asked the minister if he had any money to give them. When the minister said he had no money his son replied "What about the money buried in the chicken yard?" The gang member got rough with the small son when Jessie stepped in and made him leave telling him, "We don't take pennies from preachers." The joke was on Jessie as the minister had buried thousands of dollars of gold in the chicken yard but Jessie showed his campasion to the man of the cloth and his family. The gang rode away with no harm was done and no momey. Whether my James Family is related to Jessie or not, I don't know. Maybe they just share the same name but the cave Jessie stayed in was on their allotment land. Clydene
