James Gang in Southeast MO

My husband's g grandfather was Daniel T Cole from Bollinger County MO. His aunt told her boys that her grandfather (which would be Daniel T Cole, was good freinds with Jesse James. I suspect he was related. Problem is, I can't find the parents of Daniel T Cole. I know he was born in MO in 1830 and had 8 children on of which was my husbands grandmother Naomi Jane Cole Looney.

One of my employees tells me her husbands is related to Jesse James (on the James side). Her husband grew up in Bollinger County and he told her there is a cave in Millersville where the James Gang his out.

An aunt in law of my husband maiden name James claims to be related to Jesse James. She is from the Southeast MO area as well.

I really need to find the parents of Daniel T Cole from Bollinger County MO and would like to know if anyone else has heard of a connection with Southeast MO Bollinger COunty in particular and the James Gang.

During that period of time Bollinger County was a rough and tough place to be.

Sandra F

Thank you for your help. I was trying to connect the Nicely brothers to Jesse and his family to my aunt's family. Long before I read about the Nicely's famous crime in Somerset, I asked my aunt about her husband's family and she just said that they were notorious and from Somerset. She didn't elaborate and I only accidently stumbled on the story of the crime and trial of the Nicely brothers from Somerset. By then my aunt was deceased and I cannot be sure they are connected. I appreciate your input.

Sorry my tree was deleted so I can not show you the tree on Ancestry any longer, but they connected through Elizabeth Ferris which was Jesse James 5 Grandmother. Roland Nicely's wife Rowena Rowsey is how Elizabeth Ferris is connected to me. Rowland was my Great Grandfather. The Nicely brothers Joesph and David's mother was not related directly to the James family. In fact Elizabeth's last name was not even James at all like some have it on Ancestry.

I have these Nicely Brothers in my tree connected to Jesse and Frank James if you want to see how they are related.
Surnames: Query
About ten years ago I read an article in a Somerset County(PA) paper about the 100 year anniversary of the hanging of two brothers whose last name was Nicely. The brothers had robbed a local farmer of a substantial (for that time) amount of money, but they were captured, tried and hung. Prior to the robbery, the article stated that both boys had spent the previous summer with their notorius cousin, Jesse James. Since I have relatives named Nicely who came from that area of PA, I wonder if anyone can validate Nicelys in the James' family tree. Thank you.
I have 2 stories here. (1) My mother told me that my great grandfather is related to the James's, was told I am his 4th cousin. (2) My cousin did some research and found that our great grandfather rode with Jesse when he was a young man, he messed up a robbery and after that Jesse made my great grandad hold the getaway horses. So the story goes, my great grandad was known on one side of the river as Mr. White and on the other side Mr. Black. My great grandfathers name is Robert M. Black (if that's his real name). No one in the family will talk about that side of the family, so it's a brick wall to my cousin and I. Would love to know the truth about my great grandfather.

Also, Zerelda (Jesse and Franks mother) is either my great aunt or my great great aunt. Can't remeber off hand, lol.

Re: Frank James Retirement

There is a Frank James Sr. buried in Richardson Cemetery Lawrence Co. Tn. Feb. 6, 1836 - June 22, 1915.Someone wrote article in a Lawrence Co. Tn. Book just out that Frank James married Martha C.C. White d/o D.H. & Milley J. White she was only 15 and took TB and died shortly after they married. They had a son Robert who died young. After Martha died he married Elizabeth Jane Williams d/o Wm. F. & Sarah C.McMasters Williams.Frank and Elizabeth married April 1, 1875 Lawrence Co. Tn.Was said that Frank lived in isolated section of Lawrence Co. at Flat Rock near Mockerson Creek. Also not far away just across the Al./Tn. in Lauderdale Co.Al. in the Bluewater Cem.is a grave with the name Jesse James Dec. 5, 1840 - Dec. 6, 1891.In another cem. in Lauderdale Co. Al. is Joshua James 1808 - Jan. 26, 1881 Hill Cem.h/o Esther James 1806 - July 11, 1881 Hill Cem. does anyone know of these people? Could this be the real James boys and had others to act as them while they lived here in peace? Some say that Jesse wasn't really killed by his cousin that it was staged.????? I was told by my great aunt who is in abt. 90 years now, that her grandfather who lived in Prospect Tn. He said we were related to the James boys.I have found no proof of this but her grand father was Raymond Newton"NEWT"Brown who married Lizzie Barnes.Newt told her as a child that the James gang spent the night in his or his fathers barn in Prospect Tn. near Elkmont Al.Have no way of proving any of this except my Aunt is still living and she remembers this being told to her as a child. All these places/towns are not very far apart by way the crow flys. The James robbed the Muscle Shoals mail carrier and rode toward Tn. which would more than likely been Savannah Tn. or Lawrence Co. Tn.Also was told by other relatives that one of the James boys rode up to their house in Limestone Co. Al. a few miles from Lauderdale Co. AL. and asked for a dipper of water. He drank water at the well and rode off without any problems. No proof except by word of mouth. It seems that it is possible since all these places are all connected.

This may or may not be relevant. My Mother's father lived in Terre Haute back in the 1870s or thereabouts. She loved to tell the story about her father and his brother running away from home. As family legend has it, they stopped at a farmhouse somewhere along the Wabash (she thought) for water. The woman who was home told them they could have some, but to "Hurry up because the James boys are on their way back." They, in her words, "skedaddled out of there". She always thought the woman was Frank's and Jesse's sister Susan, but that was never confirmed and I could never find any indication she even lived anywhere but in Missouri.

The story may be true, but the woman may have been another relative or no relative at all. I've always been curious.

I just nailed down my husband's relationship to Jesse and Frank James a couple of weeks ago. He is a 5th great grandson of Drury Mims who was Shadrach Mim's brother.

I have a distant relationship through the Mims family as well but it is indirect. My great grandfather's brother Richard Insall married Caroline Mims whose father was William M. Mims. Caroline's family also traces back to Shadrach Mims.

Does anyone have any information on the traveling of Jesse James in the State of Indiana.

My family, Briles, says that my great, great, great-grandfather's hid out with him. They said one of his hideouts was somewhere down on Blue River in what is know Crawford/Harrison County State Forestry. Then it was Scott Township, Harrison County.

Any information would be greatly appreciated! You know how everyone claims to be related to, or hung out with him.

Thanks,
Ashlee

Jessie James Kin?

While visiting some James Family in Bryan Co., OK about 15 years ago we got on the discussion of Jessie James, the outlaw. I asked if any of them knew him and they said their grandfather had known him. I asked if when he came into the Indian Territory how the people greeted him - friend or foe? They said he brought money in and was a generous and considerate man when he visited (hid out) there. I asked them where he stayed when there. Mr.James replied that he and his man stayed in a cave and he showed me where it was. Both my father and mother's family are from that area. On my mohter's side, S. James from MO married her great aunt and was part Choctaw or Cherokee. Later, I found a newspaper article written about Jessie James that verified that he indeed did stay in what is now Bryan Co., OK so their account is probably accurate. In that article, it was mentioned that the Choctaw treasurer feared that Jessie James was going to rob him of the gold allotment money he held for the tribe. He asked the local minister to keep the money for him which he did. The James gang rode up to the ministers house one day and asked to partake in supper with them. One of his gang asked the minister if he had any money to give them. When the minister said he had no money his son replied "What about the money buried in the chicken yard?" The gang member got rough with the small son when Jessie stepped in and made him leave telling him, "We don't take pennies from preachers." The joke was on Jessie as the minister had buried thousands of dollars of gold in the chicken yard but Jessie showed his campasion to the man of the cloth and his family. The gang rode away with no harm was done and no momey. Whether my James Family is related to Jessie or not, I don't know. Maybe they just share the same name but the cave Jessie stayed in was on their allotment land. Clydene

I had seen this a while back and thought maybe it could have been Lilbourn. If I remember right this happened in Missouri 1838. If his mother(Elizabeth) died in 1834 and Drury Poor contested her will, Lilbourn may have gotten disgusted and left Logan County.

Was Elizabeths daughter that married Herndon named Louisa?
