Does anyone have a list or has anyone started a list on who rode with Jesse James? A list would be interesting to have on file. How would you go about verifying this information?

Jessie James Kin?

While visiting some James Family in Bryan Co., OK about 15 years ago we got on the discussion of Jessie James, the outlaw. I asked if any of them knew him and they said their grandfather had known him. I asked if when he came into the Indian Territory how the people greeted him - friend or foe? They said he brought money in and was a generous and considerate man when he visited (hid out) there. I asked them where he stayed when there. Mr.James replied that he and his man stayed in a cave and he showed me where it was. Both my father and mother's family are from that area. On my mohter's side, S. James from MO married her great aunt and was part Choctaw or Cherokee. Later, I found a newspaper article written about Jessie James that verified that he indeed did stay in what is now Bryan Co., OK so their account is probably accurate. In that article, it was mentioned that the Choctaw treasurer feared that Jessie James was going to rob him of the gold allotment money he held for the tribe. He asked the local minister to keep the money for him which he did. The James gang rode up to the ministers house one day and asked to partake in supper with them. One of his gang asked the minister if he had any money to give them. When the minister said he had no money his son replied "What about the money buried in the chicken yard?" The gang member got rough with the small son when Jessie stepped in and made him leave telling him, "We don't take pennies from preachers." The joke was on Jessie as the minister had buried thousands of dollars of gold in the chicken yard but Jessie showed his campasion to the man of the cloth and his family. The gang rode away with no harm was done and no momey. Whether my James Family is related to Jessie or not, I don't know. Maybe they just share the same name but the cave Jessie stayed in was on their allotment land. Clydene

It seemed like very little was known about Elizabeth Woodson Mimms, Poor, Hodges, the Great Grandmother of Frank and Jesse James. Here are some documents that show she died in 1834 in Logan County and that she did have children with William Hodges.

Logan County Kentucky
Book F page 66
Will of Elizabeth Hodges ( Great Grandmother of Frank & Jesse James)

Does anyone have any information on the traveling of Jesse James in the State of Indiana.

My family, Briles, says that my great, great, great-grandfather's hid out with him. They said one of his hideouts was somewhere down on Blue River in what is know Crawford/Harrison County State Forestry. Then it was Scott Township, Harrison County.

Any information would be greatly appreciated! You know how everyone claims to be related to, or hung out with him.

Thanks,
Ashlee

Poor.

Because these are legal size I had to scan half pages so these papers will involve more than one posting. There are lots of names here and on the last couple of pages are a couple of boarding fees for some of Johns children. I have a feeling that those children were shuffled around a lot.

Jack Bishop and Jesse James

Here is some information I have on Jack Bishop
Tennessee Carter Bishop (T. C. Bishop) had a younger brother Jack Carriger Bishop who had lived out side of the law. During the Civil War Jack was a member of Quantrill’s Guerrillas and when the War was over most of Quantrill’s men surrendered to the Union. Some of Quantrill’s men including Jack Bishop, Jesse and Frank James refused to surrender and fought there way back to Missouri and then disbanded.
After the War Jack rode with the James and Younger Gang until he murdered Jacob Snider in Colorado over a mining dispute. With a price of $5700. on his head he went into hiding at the “Rest Ranch” one of the James Gang hideouts in Pecos River Co. Texas. In the late 1870s Jack Carriger Bishop showed up at his brother’s (Tennessee Carter Bishop) Rockpile ranch in Sonoma Co. Calif. where Jack hideout with his family until his brother became nervous of his reputation as Sheriff, He gave Jack a horse and sent him North to Oregon.
Jack Carriger Bishop took the name of John Hall. In the 1880 census we find John Hall in Galice Creek, Josephine Co. Oregon with his wife Mattie and children, Hattie (12), Alice (8), George (3) and Lilley (1). John Hall died April 12 1914 in Grants Pass, Oregon.
Jesse James (Outlaw) "Kentucky Connection" ??

Hello:

I was just wondering if anyone has ever heard a supposed story on how Jesse was named.

Reason I ask this is because it has been passed down through our family (Hicks) that Jesse's mother Zeralda and my ggg-grandmother Levisa (Vicy) Saddler-Hicks were good friends. My gg-grandfather Jesse Hicks was born in 1843 in Hindman (Knott County) KY.

Story goes that Zeralda liked granpa Jesse's name so much she hence named her son Jesse also. This is the story that has been "passed down" through our family. No way of knowing if there is any substance to this story. :-)

Deb

I don't know how accurate this is, but I have been told that I am related to Jesse James. My grandmother, Ruby LeMaster, her grandmother or greatgrandmother was supposed to be Frank and Jesse's mother. Again I don't know if there is any truth to this story. I look forward to any replies.

My great-grandfather, Edward A. Zimmerman lived in the Plattsburg, St. Joseph, Missouri area from 1880 to 1885. He was in partnership with a Mr. Bryant under the name of Bryant & Zimmerman photography studio. My great-aunt had a photo of Jesse James, of which I have a copy, that was taken by my great-grandfather E. A. Zimmerman just after Jesse was shot. Does anyone know if a photograph by Bryant & Zimmerman is on display in any Jesse James museum? I'd like to confirm that this photo really was taken by E. A. Zimmerman.

In Memoriam - Thurston James 1933-2005

Thurston James passed away Friday, August 27, 2005, near his home in Sherman Oaks, California. He was in the process of mailing the latest issue of The James-Younger Gang Journal which he published. The cause of death presently is unknown. Thurston will be interred at Rose Hills Cemetery, Whittier, California, next week. There are no known plans of other funeral arrangements pending.

Email expressions of sympathy may be posted to
ericjames@ericjames.org
where they will be copied and sent to his family.

He was born in Lawrence, KS in 1933. Thurston crafted a career for himself in the movie industry in Hollywood as a designer and maker of props and masks for films. He authored several books. Among them are "Prop Builder's Molding & Casting Handbook," "The What, Where, When of Theatre Props: An Illustrated Chronology from Arrowheads to Video Games," and "The Theatre Props Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to Theatre Properties, Materials, & Construction."

For years Thurston affectionately played Santa Claus at the Sherman Oaks Galleria in Sherman Oaks, California, where he fell into the affections of many toddlers who today are adults. Having a tin ear did not stop him from singing or making music. Last Christmas he sent out his Christmas Greeting called "Christmas Rap," featuring himself as a rapping Santa.
http://www.ericjames.org/Christmas/2004/
His songs included nursery rhymes and "The Ballad of Jesse James."

Thurston will be remembered as the most kind, most gentle, most considerate, and most loving of all the Jesse James family.

Brother --- Frank JAMES died 18 February 1915 - Kearney, MO

"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Friday, February 19, 1915

THE DEATH OF FRANK JAMES.

Kearney, Mo., Feb. 18. --- Frank JAMES died at the old
SAMUELS home, three miles from Kearney, at 3:40 o'clock
this afternoon, following a final stroke of apoplexy at
10 o'clock this morning. He was 73 years old. He had
been ill all winter, suffering a first stroke last November.

The funeral will be held Saturday with burial in the family
lot here, beside the graves of his mother, Mrs. Zerelda
SAMUELS, and his 8-years-old half-brother, Archie, who
was killed by a bomb tossed into the SAMUELS home by
Pinkerton detectives searching for the JAMES brothers.
The body of Jesse JAMES, which now rests under the sod
of the SAMUELS farm yard, probably will be disinterred and
buried with the rest of the family.

Mr. JAMES is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anna JAMES,
62 years old; his son, Robert, who lives on a part of the old
place; a half-brother, John SAMUELS of Excelsior Springs;
two half-sisters: Mrs. Fannie HALL of Kearney and Mrs.
Sarah Louisa NICHOLSON, who lives on a part of the old
farm; a nephew, Jesse JAMES, Jr., of Kansas City and
three nieces, one of whom, Mrs. Mary S. BARR, lives on
the old place.

Frank JAMES owned all but six acres of the old SAMUELS
farm, bequeathed him by his mother at her death, which
occurred on a train between Chickasha and Oklahoma City,
Ok., in 1911. Mrs. SAMUELS was returning to Clay County
from a visit with Frank at his farm nine miles northwest of
Fletcher, Ok. Frank JAMES rented the Oklahoma farm
shortly afterwards and returned to the old home to live the
year around, but continued to own the Oklahoma property.

======================================================
(I have no connection with this family.)
johnobrien@kc.rr.com
======================================================

neirbo5
Printed on the bottom of the picture is the caption JESSE JAMES KILLED IN THIS HOUSE APRIL 3 1882. The picture is adhered to a hard, cardboard frame that is 5 1/2 x 6 1/2. Since my great-grandfather had relatives living in St. Joseph at the time that Jesse James was killed, I am assuming that it was sent to him as a souvenir of this event. This picture also shows a 2-story house that was sitting next to it. Does anyone have any information on this picture?

Thank you!

Jesse James' cousins, the Nicely brothers

About ten years ago I read an article in a Somerset County(PA) paper about the 100 year anniversary of the hanging of two brothers whose last name was Nicely. The brothers had robbed a local farmer of a substantial (for that time) amount of money, but they were captured, tried and hung. Prior to the robbery, the article stated that both boys had spent the previous summer with their notorius cousin, Jesse James. Since I have relatives named Nicely who came from that area of PA, I wonder if anyone can validate Nicelys in the James' family tree. Thank you.

Can anyone tell me the name of a book about Jesse that mentions all the 100's of fake photos and I *believe* lists all his relatives.

I remember reading it a few years ago. they showed a pictured of a supposedly bearded Jesse with his feet propped up near a stove. Claimed it was a fake because the person had BIG feet and Jesse wore a small shoe.

My GGrandfather was supposed to have been about 5 and his relatives put him on a horse and had him ride up to the cave to give them a basket of food.
My GGrandfather's family lived in Siloam Springs, Benton, AR. It would of been about 1883+/-???
Would the timing be right, does anyone know??

Re: Descendant of Evan James and Anne Foreman?

Are Jesse and Frank James descended from (Evan James?) and Anne (Foreman) James? They are my 6th great-grandparents. From Jesse James' family tree, I don't see a connection to these two people.

Maybe it is just family legend, but I have a quote from an ancestor that was written down and passed on through the years. One of my ancestors told of how he ran into the James side of our family. He "returned to Coshocton Co., OH as a young man and was on a buckboard with a cousin when he passed several James relatives whom he had never met. He said they were so disreputable that he didn't get down off the wagon to introduce himself to them."

This quote is accompanied by an explanation of the McDonald relation to the "infamous Frank and Jesse James".
"One of Frank and Jesse James' ancestors (first name unknown) was the husband of one Anne James who died in 1840. The James family came from Westmoreland Co., MD. " It goes on to say that Anne James is a distant grandmother to both my grandfather and the James brothers.

Does anyone know the accuracy of this? From my research, I think my James family was not the same family as that of Frank and Jesse.

Canada Connection to the James Family

Hello James Family & Researchers:
I'm looking for a connection to the James outlaw family to Canada!
My great great grandfather George James born in 1850 in Massachusetts, moved to Alpena as a young child with his family and meet & married Lenora Graham (born in Canada) in Alpena Michigan or in around that area or they married in Michigan DeTour Chippewa where they raised and had their nine children. After the last child was born they moved to Blind River Ont, Canada, moving through Manitoulin Island and some of their older children settled there, and in Sault Ste Marie, and that area also. My family has told stories about being related to the James outlaw and that Frank & Jesse came to the Manitoulin Island to hide out and fished with the family children there! It's was said that my George James was a cousin to the James outlaw family and that maybe even have been a Father to some one in my direct James line??
If anyone can let me know about this I would greatly appreciate this!
Thanks Ann Dearing

Jesse James in the Big Bend Area?

Hello All,
I have a question that will be almost impossible to answer but thought that it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot. My ggg grandfather was a horse thief in East Texas. He was shot and hung from a tree for his antics but the family story is that he would steal the horses from East Texas and herd them to the Big Bend area. At that location, he would sell the horses to Jesse James & gang and also Sam Bass. I don't know anything about these outlaws or even the possibility of these transactions being accurate. If anyone would have any thoughts on the subject, please let me know!

Thanks,
Misty

Nancy Bradshaw - Link to Jesse James or his Mother?

This much we know for sure: John and Nancy Bradshaw, my gggrandparents, lived in Missouri. They had three sons, George, John, and James. Sometime after 1870, Nancy moved East to the Wilmington, Ohio area.

This much has been passed down through the family for years: Nancy reportedly cooked for Jesse and possibly his mother Zerelda. Nancy was apparently injured at some point, because she had lost an arm. She and her boys were supposed to have later stayed in a Cave hideout of Jesse's, and possibly cooked for them there. Jesse also reportedly provided the cash for Nancy and the boys train tickets to go back East.

If anyone can provide information to positively prove or disprove any of these rumors, we would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

The Frank Triplett listed as author of "The Life, Times, and Treacherous Death of Jesse James" would have been around the same time period as my wife's relation. I was wondering if there was any comment or anything in the foreward or dedication concerning his wife or family, so that I may trace the author to my wife's lineage? Thanks so much.

The Cobb Family Research: Jacobs and Jesse James

The family story continues as follows:

My great-grandmother, Rose Etta (Jacobs) Cobb lived on a farm about 20 miles or so from a farm where Jesse James used to hang out. She saw him and knew him as a little girl. The Cobb family learned not to talk about their kinship with Jesse and his family because it proved dangerous and unwise.
The Cobb family and related cousins were railroad men and it was unhealthy for their career to tell such things, even in IL at that time. The COBBs and their cousins, the TUCKERs, and another family had been forced to leave Missouri because the need for work once kicked off their present jobs for the railroad there in MO. Some TUCKERs stayed, they worked for the law and were safe. The family story states that one of Jesse's was a Cobb. Dad's (Floyd Cobb) uncle Clemont Cobb married a Tucker. And, one of dad's dad's sister also married a Tucker. These TUCKERs were also related to Jesse James. Originally, Rose Etta (Jacobs) Cobb wanted to name Floyd - Jesse because he looked so much like him, but was overruled because it wasn't safe to be Jesse's kin then.

One another note, it was recorded the following quote from a magazine article. It doesn't say if he is related or not.

G. H. Tucker fought in the Johnson County War for the Cattlemen. Later he headed for the lawless hills of the Oklahoma Territory. He was 19 years old. In later years, their six-guns were to bring the first touch of law to
the area around Ardmore, Oklahoma, where Tucker served a a U.S. Deputy Marshall... and Garrett as Sheriff. (Page 223, Time Life, The Gun Fighters).

God bless. Peace and blessings.
Dolores Cobb Phifer

Don't know if this is an old fact, but while researching another old west character I found evidence that F. James was in Miles City in 1879. I had to wonder if he was there to ''case'' the place for another bank job. However, he was recognized and had to depart prematurely, leaving his saddle and rifle behind.

Frank James

I know this may be a needle in a haystack, but I am looking for information on my great-grandfather, James McGlothin, of Oil Trough (Independence County) Arkansas.

I have found some information that indicates that he and Frank James were good friends. Whether or not my great-grandfather rode with him is sketchy at best, but he went by the nickname "Big Jim"

If anyone has any information on this, I would like to hear from you.

tori920@home.com

Researching a cousin who is said to have ridden with the Jesse James gang. He is the son of Morgan Walker of Clay Co., MO. The Walker families were members of Jesse's father's church, the Providence Baptist Church. Does anyone know about Andy Walker?
Thank you.

Am I Jesse James relative?

Hi...

I have been searching for a familial link with Jesse James as it has been just "common knowledge" in my paternal family that we are Jesse's relatives. My grandmother's maiden name was "Zerelda Rains", so "RAINS" would be the name-link I believe. It is funny - bear both Jesse's mother's and wife's name - Zerelda - as my middle name. It was actually passed down through several females in our family - me, my grandmother, her mother...and supposedly further back - so it was always a "family" name - but I have never gotten any geneological info to back this connection up though and I am curious. If anyone could tell me anything on the "Rains-James" link please let me know!!!! You can email me at monicaalana@hotmail.com

Jesse James speaks

"I came back to Missouri, leaving Frank behind. It was not safe for him to come to Clay county, and he did not always want to be killing." - Jesse James in "A Terrible Quintette", 1873

In this week's website update more of "A Terrible Quintette" has been added, with Jesse James speaking in an 1873 interview about his wartime adventures and life as an outlaw. The flavor of his 'voice' is distinctive and interesting--gives a great sense of the personality behind the person. This article is rare and was very hard to find and get transrcibed. There are links on the page to how to get the whole of "A Terrible Quintette" along with "Noted Guerrillas".

http://www.civilwarstlouis.com/History/jamesgangterriblequin...

The "Outlaws" page has more pictures added, and descriptions of Bob & Charlie Ford, plus from earlier updates more pictures of Frank and Jesse James, the Younger brothers, Bud and Donny Pence, and a very rare picture of "Red Monkers".

http://www.civilwarstlouis.com/History/jamesgang.htm

Deb
http://www.civilwarstlouis.com
Jesse James lore

Back in the dark ages, in the late 1960's, my husband at the time worked for General Motors. He had to take a trip to Detroit for some training. We chose to go via fabled route 66. The trip was memorable enough, but it was the trip back to California that took an interesting turn.

We drove through Missouri. I'd never been to Missouri so it was quite an experience for me. Everything was so green. For some miles we passed signs telling us to go to the Jesse James Caverns. After seeing such signs for quite some time we came upon them and decided to visit.

We took a peek inside the caves but I'm horribly claustrophobic and we chose to visit the museum. The exhibits in the little museum were really enjoyable. But the curator is what I remember most.

He told us a story of how he'd come upon those caves below. He was exploring the caves and came upon a man living inside. The man was quite old and gave his name as Frank Dalton. I believe he was a cousin of Jesse James.

The museum curator told of the story of the death of Frank Dalton and the life of Jesse James, who lived to be 104 and died in 1957. It was an interesting trip.
