Hello Trish. I am curious about your interest in pirates (Long Island, 1600s) One of my New Amsterdam ancestors was Anthony Van Salee, and he and his brother both lived in New Amsterdam before Anthony and his wife moved to Long Island at the legal behest of the New Amsterdam Court. They are shown on the 1660 map by Jacques Cortelyou, also an ancestor of mine. Also shown is a Jan Jansen. Anthony and his brother were the sons of a Jan Jansen, who named himself Murat Rais when he became the head of the Sultan of Morocco's piracy fleet. I am wondering if their father may have become active out of that area late in life. Does this fit into your area of interest? The Father (Jan Jansen/Murat Rais) has been written of by Irish Journalist Des Eakin regarding his infamous foray into Baltimore, Ireland, and his similar adventure to Iceland is well recorded. These activities were out of his Morocco locations. And Samuel Pepys writes that the two sons were mulatto.
