Blackbeard

I'm looking for info on the pirate Blackbeard. I have seen his name listed as Edward Thach and many other names. The two names that are most often associated with him are Edward Teach and Edward Drummonds. I know he came from a wealthy family in England, but would like info on who his descendents are and who his ancestors are. does anyone have him on their family tree?

Pirates in Savannah Georgia

I have been looking online for information on Pirates In Savannah Georgia. I have heard Savannah was a wild and dirty town in the early days and there are claims here that it was somewhat of a pirate town. Stories here claim many sailors were "shanghai'd" as was the term used for getting a sailor drunk then putting him on a ship as a crew member without his permission. The Sailor would "come to" from his drunk and find himself already out to sea. There is a resturant here in Savannah named the "Pirate House" that claims its fame from being a "pirate hangout" There are also rumors and stories of a tunnel from its depths to the riverfront that shanghai'd sailors were transported through to the ships. I have researched online and haven't found one mention of Savannah. Charleston, Beaufort yes, but Savannah no. With all the channels and barrier islands here is seems a perfect place for their use. There is even an island near Savannah named "Blackbeards Island" I know they travelled back and forth past Savannah so I'm sure it was one of their stopping points. Anyone with any information, please email me or leave a message here.

Teenage Pirate

I've been recently told that I'm related to a pirate who happened to live a long time ago. I think it was between 1700-1900 (1900 at most). I don't really know much about her except that she was a teenage pirate whose name started with a J. Can anyone tell me if you have any information? I know she was from around the New Orleans area.

Pirates in South Carolina

Has anyone come across the name of John Murrell?
He was said to have been a pirate in the 1700's. He was supposed to have been the person Murrell's Inlet was named for. This is a place in South Carolina. I wanted to know if he had a relative, Robert Murrell from Berkeley, SC. Robert lived in the late 1600's to the early 1700s. He lived in the Christ Church Parish area of Charleston (Charles Town) SC.
Thanks for any help!
Susan

Southold Long Island Pirates? late 1600's

Are there any reference books which name pirates? Was Southold a nest of pirates?

1. I notice in the wills of the people (John Budd) I'm tracing of Southold, Suffolk, NY in the late 1600's that there is no mention of God. Isn't that unusual?

2. Despite the fact that these folks were supposedly merchants who travelled to the 'South Seas" and built homes in the "Antigua style" (John Budd's home - now an historic site), in their wills they do not leave their ships or interests in their ships to heirs. The Dutch in NYC did leave shipping interests to heirs in that time period.

3. The late 1600's census shows the population to be English, Dutch, Blacks, Indians, and an unusual number of French.

4. People living in the area that is now Westchester Co., NY, then part of the Connecticut Colony complained of pirates in that area along the coast. Some of these folks from Southold also owned land in Rye. People in the Caribbean were complaining of French pirates.

5. David Gardiner of Gardiner's Island testified at the trial of Capt. Kidd who was hanged in 1701. Kidd had stopped at Gardiner's Island and left some material there and had requested sheep for his voyage. There were rumors of buried treasure on Gardiner's Island for years.

6. The coast in that area has many coves and islands - natural places to hide and maintain boats.

I'm also at a dead end with a Jonas Winters who married Ruth Corwin in Setauket.. I just noticed in the 7Oceans site that a John and a Christopher Winters were pirates. A Christopher Winters had alot of trouble with the Mass. church elders and was dismissed. A John Winters was murdered in early Massachusetts.
