I have a relative who spent time in Holloway prison in the 1960's. Does anyone know if records for the prison can be accessed? Or perhaps court records from the case? I don't know what charge she was found guilty of but i know she stabbed the wife of the man she was having an affair with after she found out.

I had a Grt.-Grt. Grandfather who died in Erie Co. Penitenary in 1882, although he was only in for 6 months. Conditions there like at all prisons must have been deploreable . Would anyone know of a good site to learn about Erie Prison conditions , and if they had a cemetery on there land . Is it possible some one could have shipped the body back to the town where the crime happened. The person iam re-searching is James H. Norris b. 1845 died june 1882 at Erie Pen. Thanks Jim

1931 Records for Michigan State Prison in Jackson, MI

Hello!

I am hoping someone can help me locate records for an incarceration in Michigan State Prison in 1931.

Philias ARBOUR (aka Philip ARBOUR) was arrested in Detroit in Feb 1931 for robbery. He was tried, convicted , and sentenced to a minimum of 4 1/2 years in prison. He served that time at the Michigan State Prison in Jackson, MI.

During the time from Aug 1931 to Dec 1931, Phil's family attempted to gain his parole . . . without any apparent success.

Phil was a Canadian citizen at the time of his arrest so all of his family's correspondence was conducted through the Ontario Minister of Justice, who of course had no jurisdiction in the matter. It seems as though Phil was not paroled and had to served his entire term. He then was most likely deported upon his release, as the US has no room for criminals.

What more info might I be able to discover? How would I obtain any arrest records, court records, prison records, or other records pertaining to this case?

I would be grateful for any ideas!

Shannon
Mesa, AZ

Can anyone help? I am trying to trace what happened to a prisoner by the name of Peter Stewart.
He was tried in Inverness High Court in April 1852, and subsequently sentenced to 7 years transportation. I can find no record of him being transported, so I suspect that the sentence was never carried out. (he was probably around 50 years old at the time). He certainly never returned to his family, so I'm guessing he either died in prison, or was indeed transported, but I don't know where. His co-accused were sentenced to 1 year each in Dingwall prison.
I have copies of the trial papers, but none of them state what happened to the prisoner after the trial.
Any ideas?

On July 15, 1923 Margaret, who was involved in an affair with the married Murdock, shot him 3 times. It was an apparent love triangle that supposedly went bad because he was going back to his wife, who was pregnant with their second child, and Margaret couldn't bear that. I was curious to know what happened to her and about the trial that certainly came about afterword. Any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Indeed the old castle-like building is no longer in use as a prison, but the new building beside it (MANCI) is very much in use today. It houses all types of criminals including those for murder. Not a pleasant sight, but a necessary one!! The old building is used for tours and Halloween haunted house. Never been there and I really don't want to.

I am trying to find information on a murder, escape, and child abduction that took place in Walla Walla, Washington. The murder happened on Jan 1, 1861 on the Wiskey or Hog Eye Creek putting into the Touchet River, the victim was Isreal D. Davis the accused Alonzo J. Beebe. Alonzo was arrested and placed in the jail in the city of Walla Walla, around the end of March or begining of April he escaped. He and his family, father Philo, Brothers Hiram and George all dissapeared taking Laura daughter of Alonzo by Mary Cantrall whom he never married with them. She was 6 years old at the time. Mary did go through the court system in an attempted to get her daughter back. Where would I find information on this event? Were there newspapers in the area? I would like to know if Alonzo was ever caught and returned to Walla Walla to face trail.

Ac cording to his draft registration for the WW 1 Draft, my grandfather showed that he had just been released on parole from Washington State prison where he had served five years and was then out. This was in 1917. He appeared on a City Directory in Tacoma, Washington in 1911, however this may have been a holdover from 1910. No one in the family aside from possibly his wife, my grandmother knew of this or at least were not talking of it. I would like to know how I can go about discovering what he had done to be incarcerated for that many years and what his sentence had been? Thanking everyone for any and all assistance I may or might never receive on this.

He was an inmate at the Iowa State Penitentiary from December 1921 to February 1925. He corresponded with a Mrs. R. J. Hodge in Cedar Rapids, IA. He may have been re-incarcerated after being released in 1925. Prior to serving time at the State Pen, he was at Anamosa.

Thanks

Sherry

Gr.Gr.Gr.Grandpa's Record>1860 MI.

In doing family research it slowly came out to me that gr.gr.gr.grandpa David Wood, supposedly killed his wife in the late 1850's. This event took place in Calhoun Co.,MI.. I found a David Wood listed in the 1860 census record for Marshall,as a prisoner for murder. And I have since suspected the story as somewhat true. I was given a copy of a what appears to be a very old record of 1861 that is dealing with his real estate it seems. This record plainly says he has been declared insane. Some where in my searches it was said had he been convicted,he would have been sent to the state prison. I read in a much earlier post that in 1880 Jackson was the state prison. Was it also the state prison in 1850-1860? And given that the family had him declared insane, would he have possibly been sent to an asylum? At this point I want every detail I can get,but would most of all like to know where he is buried. I'm guessing the family had nothing to do with him after this,as know one seems to have ever heard a word of what happened to him. But back in that era, when he died wouldn't the state or county have paid for his burial? And shouldn't there be a record if so? I have checked cem. in MI. and have found nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance,Michele P.S. Just a wee bit of fun, story has it the house where this event happened became haunted. You get 'em ggggrandpa!

I am looking for any relatives or anyone who knew this Fred Thrasher. This may have been the same Fred Thrasher who served time in the Iowa State Penitentery. The Fred I am looking for is listed as a prisoner in the 1925 Iowa state census, and in the 1920 & 1930 Federal Censuses. His parents were Clarence and Etta Belle (Calder/Wallace) Thrasher. In 1910, the family was living in Michigan. Belle ran off with another man around 1907. Is this the same Fred Thrasher?

Savanna Times-Journal
Tuesday 16-July-1968, pg 56

Fred Thrasher dies at age 81
Fred Thrasher, 81, of Main street, died Saturday night in Savanna city hospital where he had been a patient one day.

Graveside service was conducted by the Rev. Their names were Jakob Hesse (Or Hess) and Anna Hesse. (Her maiden name was Egli.) They both died in 1639, and I would like to know if they died of illnes or if they were executed. I also located a land patent he purchased on acreage in SD in 1885. Somewhere between 1885 and 1900 was he incarcerated, but I don't know when and for what crime. He died in 1904, but I have no idea if he died in prison or not. I've contacted the central records office for the prison, but they cannot locate information on him without a year of incarceration. Does anyone have advice on how to find this out?

Thanks-

My paternal Grt. Grt. G-father Will F. FRANKLIN committed a robbery in the year 1895 in Macon, NC while my Grt. Grt. Grandmother was pregnant with my Grt. Grandfather.

Will was sent to jail and Grt. Grandmother divorced him and later remarried.

Will seems to have disappeared after that. I have no idea what happened to him or where to look for info.

I would like to know more about my FRANKLIN side. It is rumored that we are of Native American descent.
I would appreciate any info such as newspaper article or prison record.

David Adkins - Penitentiary, Frankfort, Franklin Co., KY (1880 census)

In the 1880 census, David Adkins (age 33) was enumerated at the Penitentiary in Frankfort, Franklin Co., KY. His marital status was "married". David Adkins may have been a son of David and Nancy Faulkner Adkins of Whitley Co., KY. Apparently he shot and killed a woman named Margaret Faulkner in Whitley Co. sometime during the early 1870s. The details I have are very sketchy and I am trying to piece this puzzle together. I need to know what became of David Adkins after 1880. To whom was he married? Did he have any children? I have been chasing an elusive David Adkins for years and wonder if this might be my guy. But I simply cannot find the additional information I need about this man. Can anyone help me or offer suggestions? Are there any sources for prison records pertaining to this era? Thanks in advance...
Attica State Prison possibly 1946-1962 records

Hi,I am trying to locate the prison records for my deceased grandfather Arthur Leslie Yox aka Skip Yox.he spent time in Attica on more than one occasion.the one time we specifically know of is between 1959 and 1962 as he was there when my father was born.I emailed the New york State departmaent of corrections and they forwarded me to the state archives department who said they need a date of conviction, that i should contact the County of Erie where he was convicted so I did they were less than happy to hear from me and said that they would have to go to the basemant and "dig" through old files to locate that date and it would take "awhile".I left my name # and email address and never recieved a response back from them.It was obouisly to much for them to go to the basemant and look up one name.Is there any where else I can look for this info myself?I have all info pertaing to my grandfather except for this date of conviction and what the crime was. Some people in my family said he was connected to the a group somewhat like the mob and may served time due his running with these people, also we belive he did time for non support of 3 children by a previos marriage. In 1944 Skip enlisted in the Army he said the Judge told him Go to the militery or Prison so he choose the militery and served in world war 2 for the duration of the war plus 6 months. In about 1946 he was dischaged and went right back to his old ways and this is when he did time on what we belive to be 4 different occassions.Any help or any direction would be great.Thank you in advance for your time.

Ayme Yox Martin

I am trying to figure if I can request court records regarding a murder/manslaughter trial. Trial would have taken place in 1926-1927 in Madison County, Illinois. I have found some newspaper clippings but haven't been able to find out if the accused was found guilty or not. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Will anyone with prison population references look up the name of Uylessus Hewett/Hewitt aka Buster Hewett for me? He was sent the to prison from Akron Ohio for robbery and burglery in the late 1920's -1930's. Not sure of the date. My grandparents wouldn't talk about him much. All I know about him is that he was African/American, fair complexion, born in Alabama in 1909, but the family moved to Akron around 1919. Buster died while still incarcerated. Supposedly he contracted TB and was sent to the infirmary at Lima State Hospital and died there. If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it....Thank you

Anita Hewett-Williams

albert anastasio

looking for any information about an albert Anastasio who was born around 1900 and lived at 454 Clinton street in 1923. in the Brooklyn Standard Unio 1928 news he was held in connection with the assasination of Carmine Cenatiemtio in 1926 . Carmine had been called outside of a testimonial dinner only to have bullets pumped into him. Anastasio was a real estate agent at 151 Sackett street. I also know that on April 28, 1923 Albert Anastasio of 448 Clinton Street and Biago Giordano were shot while in an automobile on Sackett Street. They were taken to Holy Trinity Hospital where Giordano died late in the afternoon. Anastasio is believed to be fatally wounded.( Anastasio had been taken into custody by the Sheepshead Bay police after he & his friend were half indentified by my semi conscious grandfather Vincent Busardo as his shooters. Apparently he was released for lack of evidence). How would I find out if Anastasio actually died or not in connection with the shooting on Sackett street in 1923? These shootings were believed to be connected with the shooting of Charles Lagana on Election day 1922, Charles Cucchiaro on Feb 8, 1922 and Vincent Busardo on April 7, 1923. According to NYTimes article (4/29/1923 pg 17) a fourth murder occured that I do not know about.

I've found the obvious "black sheep" of my family in prison in 1901.

I'd love to know how and why he ended up there - where can I find this out?

A friend suggested searching newspapers but I am not sure where to start. He lived in Lancashire an 1891 but in 1901 he was in Portland Prison (Dorset). Does this mean he was living in Dorset prior to being imprisoned? Or would he have been sent nationally as today? I'm not sure whether to look in Lancs or Dorset?

Any help or suggestions gratefully received!

Is there a way to obtain prisoner records from either Raymond Street Jail or King's County Jail from the 1920's? I am trying to find out about my grandfather and his brother-Vincent & Joseph busardo. The time period would be 11/8/1922-March 1922. I know Joseph served time in the Raymond Street Jail for homicide, but, was later aquitted of the murder charge. Vincent was also taken into custody for a homicide on Feb 8, 1922 but i don't know what happened...if he went to jail? I don't think the charge stuck as he was gunned down 2 and half months later.

We can't find him on the 1901 census under either name. We also know that he went to prison at some point but we don't know why or when. If he was in prison on the night of the 1901 census how would we access those records. I'd appreciate any help we can get on this. Many thanks in anticipation. Sheila.

Year of birth would have been 1827 or 1828, location, Ireland. If more details are provided, it would have been Ballintra, County Donegal.

He was living on a farm in Rice County, but the family had connections to Rice, Ramsey and Hennepin counties.

Any information would be appreciated. This is just a hunch, but worth checking out.

Thank you.
Patricia Quinn Meigs

Shooting & homicides-Kings County Brooklyn, NY 1920's

I'm looking for help in finding out about shootings that had occurred in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn in 1922-23. On Election day (11/7/22) Vincenzo Busardo was shot and seriously wounded while in Tosca Gardens, a cafe at 212 Columbia Street. On that same day Joseph Busardo was arrested for murdering Gregorio Lagano at 222 Columbia Street and later acquitted. On February 8, 1923 Charles Cucchiaro was shot dead in Vincenzo Busardo's home. It had been believed he was killed by a bullet meant for Vincenzio Busardo. Another newspaper article from april 29, 1923 states Busardo was arrested for the killing of Charles Cucchiaro in his Bensonhurst home on Homecrest Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. Not enough evidence warranted keeping Busardo and he was released. On April 7, 1923 Vincenzo Busardo was walking down the corner of DeGraw and Columbia Streets, Brooklyn, NY and was shot three times in the back and died. Any information anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. My grandfather, whom I never met, was Vincenzo Busardo.

Hello I am seeking information on my grandfather Will Davis, he was convicted of 1st degree murder in MISSISSIPPI COUNTY on March 25,1928 and sentenced to life in prison. I have a newspaper article that says he was captured in Joiner,Mississippi Co. on May 4,1930 and returned to prison. I am having a very difficult time obtaining information beyond this. I do know that he received a commutation in sentencing by Proclamation of Governor Parnell on 12-23-1932. He lived somewhere around Joiner,Mississippi County. He met and married my granny on 7-1933 in Ashley, Arkansas. Can anyone help me?
Thanks,Julia

How do I find old Federal Prison records ?

I am in need of help, before my Father died he told me that he once heard that his Father (my Grandfather) had gone to prison for stealing from the Post Office.
If this did actually happen, I would have to assume that it would have been a Federal Crime since the Post Office is a Federal Government Agency.
If this did happen it would more than likely have occurred in Taylor County Texas possibly in Abilene after 1921 and prior to 1925.
Any help would be appreciated.

George Evans

Can anyone tell me why some prisons (eg Dartmoor) give full names of prisoners, while others (eg Middlesex House of Correction,Clerkenwell) only give prisoners initials? The same seems to be true of some hospitals. What were the rules for these institutions? I think that my ancestor may have been incarcerated at Clerkenwell, but I only have initials. How can I check this further?

Looking for information on Winthrop Davis, spent time in San Quentin Prison and Walla Walla State Prison. He was released from San Quentin Prison at about 70 yoa and died a year or two after being released. He was born near Winthorp, WA. and spent time in the Okanogan County Jail, Okanogan, WA. He spent most of his adult life in and out of jail and prison in the United States and Canada. I believe he beat the heck out of an attorney once and was thrown in Jail for Assault. I'm not so sure trying to beat up an attorney is such a bad thing though. He had numerous brothers and sisters, all were raised near Winthrop, Washington. His fathers name was James Davis. James Davis is buried in the Sullivan Cemetery at Winthrop, Washington State.

Convicted of "keeping a bawdy house", Halifax, NS 1865

Halifax Citizen, Thursday, June 1, 1865

Police Court -- Wednesday, May 31. -- Yesterday
Michael Malowney and "Ann his wife" were arraigned
upon a charge of keeping a bawdy house in Barrack
street. The young women, late inmates of the
"establishment," were called as witnesses. There names
are Jane Anderson, Louisa Dady, and Susan Bingay. The
first hails from St. John, N. B., the second from
Musquodoboit, and the third from Shelburne. The
history of these girls, as detailed by themselves, is
a lamentable one. It commenced with seduction and
culminated in shameless proffigacy. All of them are of
respectable parentage. The charge against Malowney and
his wife was completely established, and the court
sentenced them to pay a fine of $40, or in default,
six months in the city Prison with hard labor.
Can anyone tell me where to begin looking for someone in prison in Alabama in 1930? My Great Grandfather commited murder and I am trying to find his records. I think it may have happened in Macon, Montgomery or Elmore county, but not really sure, and don't know the year either. I found him in the 1920 census in Montgomery County but he wasn't married. Then I found his wife and first child in Macon County in 1930, but he wasn't there. I know he was alive in 1930 because he later had a child in 1932.

Please anyone ... I really need help with this. I don't even know where to start.

His name was Grover Cleveland Botsford and he married Effie White.

Thank You in advance.

Amanda

HI. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to look for information on someone who was a prisoner in SIng SIng. I believe my great grandfather, Christopher Kenny, was there in 1920. I have contacted the prison and they said that their files from that time had been destroyed in a fire. Is there any other way to go about searching? Thanks.

Barb
