Classification: Query
Surnames: Sweeny, Sweeney
Hi

Does anyone have a connection with or details of Francis Sweeny an RIC member about whom I know the following:

Joined the RIC on 11 march 1872 at the age of 21 years and at that time he was 5 feet 8 1/2 inches tall. His 'Native County' is shown as Leitrim and his religion is catholic. He was recommended for appointment by Sub Inspector Mills and his previous occupation was labourer. He was married on 11 Nov 1886 and his wife's native county is Donegal. He was stationed in Meath on 31 October 1872, moved to Donegal on 11 March 1888 and stationed in County Down on 17 February 1887. He left the service of the RIC on 15 February 1897.

Francis's father's name was Myles Sweeny/Sweeney, a farmer, as indicated on his marriage record. He married Rose Ann Campbell in the catholic chapel in Letterkenny on 11 Nov 1886. The 'Sweeny' spelling comes from the marriage record and his original RIC record. All the childrens' surnames are spelled 'Sweeney' on their birth/baptismal records. Francis (b 1851) & Rose Ann (b 1854) had 6 children as follows:

Rose Theresa: b 12 Aug 1887 in Illistrin, Donegal.

Annie Winnifred: b 17 Sept 1888 in Donegal.

Mary Susanna: b Oct 1889 in Newtownards, County Down.

Charles Francis: b 18 Feb 1891 - d 1891, in Newtownards, County Down.

Catherine: b Sept 1892 in Newtownards, County Down.

Francis John (my maternal grandfather): b 12 September 1893 - d 12 Aug 1951 in Letterkenny.

Francis (1851) is my maternal gr Grandfather and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Frank
