William Simpson, a Carter, was delivering Clay Pipes with a Horse & Wagon on Glasgow Docks on the afternoon of 23rd December 1897. It was a particularly foggy day and for some reason or another ( there was a young woman involved! ) he took a wrong turn round a shed and went over the edge of the quay and into the river. A constable, who apparently happened to be nearby, managed to save the woman and the horse from following him but, despite all attempts, William could not be saved. A report, together with details of further drownings on that day appeared in the Glasgow Herald the following day. But for the life of me I cannot find that a Death Certificate was issued - surely this cannot be so????? Any ideas out there? Malcolm
