In combination with the paper trail, that is probably enough evidence to try to find a participant whose mother descends through an all-female line, if the ancestor is question was female. You could then have him/her test for mt-DNA haplogroup at 23andMe. (You could also do a simple mt-DNA test at FTDNA a little cheaper, but the money is probably best applied to the 23andMe test.)

If the ancestor were male, you would need a male participant descended through an all-male line to test the Y-haplogroup at 23andMe. (He could also take the 12-marker test at FTDNA, but it only gives a haplogroup prediction, although it could suffice.)
