I'm trying to get more information about DNA genealogy and I'm a little confused on how it works.
For example, does the mt-DNA test only the line of the mother's mother's mother's etc. or does it test all branches of the maternal side of the family (i.e., parents, grandparents, etc.)? Would this test be helpful in finding the origins of my maternal grandmother's father and his parents?
Also, Ancestry DNA says it can trace both sides regardless of gender. Does that mean the test will give results for both maternal and paternal sides, even if the person being tested is female?
What are the benefits of getting the mt-DNA vs. Ancestry DNA?
I know I am asking a lot of questions, but I would like to know which is the best route to go before investing. I appreciate any information I can get.
