9% Persian here. FTDNA calls nearly the same percentage Arab / North African. Gedmatch gives me substantial Iberian (15%) and Italian (6%) ancestry. I have one Italian 10th ggrandfather. My known ancestry (mom's side only - dad was adopted) is overwhelmingly English/Scots/Irish - except mom's direct paternal line was German for several generations after immigration (1717) before marrying into Irish and English families.
I've got several tests going on or nearly processed now. When my mom's results come back and I can eliminate some of my matches from her side of the family, I don't expect to find much more than the usual North Europe matches, if the trees I've been seeing are any indication. So I chalk my Persian / Middle Eastern DNA up to the reference population that probably indicates the out of Africa migration.
