I just want to add another "Amen" to the 23andMe thoughts. Communication on that site is awful - from the interface to the people, since so many aren't there for genealogy. (But they don't change their settings or say something to that effect in their profiles.)
That said, I've had better luck there than with private trees here, lol. The kind people in this thread are NOT the norm in my experience. I no longer contact private tree people; with 3000+ matches and counting, who has time to try to woo them? Not when it's statistically unlikely that the person will reply or will want to continue the conversation if the connection isn't immediately obvious.
Ancestry definitely has its flaws, but the day they offer segment comparison tools is the day no sane genealogist will test at 23andMe unless they want health information. (No regrets - it was on sale and I wanted raw data plus the health info. But playing "Go Fish" with matches there without a tree to consult is just a flamin' hot mess.)
I hope everyone in this thread continues to wear out the Beta Feedback button asking for tools that will provide a happy medium on the contentious private tree issue. Selective sharing options would solve so many concerns.
I am SO excited about Ancestry's potential because of the huge user base. I can't wait for the day when we're complaining about people not sharing genomes for segment comparison instead of complaining about people not sharing trees. :)
