If there is nothing to do with dna in the results, then how do you explain being matched to people who have no tree?

Not sure I understand your concern about the map markers. Are you saying you only have pins to people in your tree and there are no pins for the people in your matches tree (which would be a glitch). The pins are intended represent the birthplaces, as you have them entered, of the people in your tree. They are not dna based because there is no way to for dna to identify the birth location of a specific ancestor. It's simply a tool to help compare people in your tree with people in the trees of your matches.
