I have seen instances of where someone has done testing to try to determine whether the person who raised them was actually their biological father. When I checked back, voila, they have now substituted a different person as their father and this naturally has resulted in them having an entirely new paternal tree. This may have been the case where your person has changed their parental listing to unknown. They may not know who their parent is, they just know now that he wasn't the person that they thought before.
