southern French people are actually genetically the same as Spanish people. this is maybe why a lot of you are showing up with so much southern european

Thanks for clarifying this. I had the same results in mine and I know for a fact that Native American is in my genetic DNA. I found Chippewa as well as Cherokee just to name a few in my ancestry line. And like you I had no findings of Finnish nor Asian lineage in my ancestry line.

Hi

Yes that is true, thanks. However it has remained fairly untained for many generations. Even my primary sources are correct, yet my ancestor was illiterate. Only one doc used a different spelling x for f and given the bad handwriting encounted this is fairly good. Most of the errors are in transcripts. I had to correct the online census last time I was on here in Feb. I had a copy of the original census for over 25 yrs directly from GRO. The new transcripts were outrageous. We know to look at the common errors s for f but would never have found these in a million years.

Having said that I have a lot of trouble when using the name to support services and have to spell it out a dozen times. My cousins say the same. So it is more remarkable that my illiterate ancestor's records have been correct and it is not that I have missed other spellings as no need to look at alternative spellings although I do. A reminder that I must not get complacent.
Cheers

One thing to keep in mind is that your surname may have changed spelling at some point. My 3rd great grandfather changed his name from Rydstrom to Ristrim when he arrived in America. No one knows why but he has a large well researched family back in Sweden. If I were to Y-DNA test a Ristrim male I expect we would find matches to Rydstroms, and Carlsson and...

Keep this in mind and look closely at any 35/37 or closer match.

Hi Michael

Wellllll l it is fairly uncommon but not rare. That is an exaggeration. The name is Bufton. It has spread throughout the USA with clusters in Wales and the borders. However in Western Australia only my male 1st cousins and their families carry down the name. I meant rare insofar as it would not attract a project unless all those Buftons out there want to join me???? I believe there is a line in Melbourne AU (and other states) and two different lines in NZ. There is only one person registered in the DNA database but I am going to give all the info to other lines I have contacted over the years and see if we can open a project for an ancestry.com test. I have to ask my cousin first! Given that our line comes from convict stock (as do some others in Australia, but don’t appear to be many left) maybe people would not be interested. Also I don’t think there will be any surprises as to our origins. I have been researching for 30 years and still struggling to finish writing my book. I need to let go of the research and concentrate on writing, but some interesting facts have needed following up. You all know that syndrome.I am very pedantic.

That is just for the benefit of other Buftons. Thanks for giving me a platform!! I just join ancestry from time to time to find relatives. My research is mainly through primary sources.
Cheers
Just because you are a R1b1b2a1a2f2 doesn't mean that you are Irish. That just happens to be one of the most common haplogroups in Ireland, but that doesn't mean it doesn't occur other places. IMO, if you know you're Irish then this haplogroup confirms it, if you aren't Irish, then it means nothing.

If you are testing a specific male line, your father, his father, his father... or have a direct male descendant of a male line to test, you are talking about Y-DNA. FamilyTreeDNA has the largest Y-DNA database. Your best bet is to join a surname project for the surname in question. You get a discount on the cost of the test, and help from the administrator. Another possibility is a Guild of One Name Studies. They sometimes have Y-DNA projects as well and are predominantly British.

Also the minimum test to expect accurate results is 37 markers.

I haven't gotten my results back yet but DNA tests go back as far as 50,000 years. I've done a lot of research on my family and 95% come from Britain directly, I do know one side of the family comes from France that moved to Britain over 1,000 years ago and 250 years ago, they came to the US. I'm guessing it will pin point that region. However, you have to remember, what this pinpoints is based on your DNA, not necessarily where your ancestors came from, meaning, your DNA markers will show where that DNA is mostly from around the world. It all depends on how far back the DNA looks. If your Haplogroup is G, in other words, most of your family could have lived in France for 1,000 years but your DNA markers show you came from Iran, for example, which is where it comes from. Your features may be different now because of the mothers DNA mixed in with it but Paternal DNA would show that is where your DNA originates, not necessarily where they lived. Your blood can't tell you if your grandpa lived in Britain or Spain, just where that mutation of bloord group started at. Again, it all goes back to how far they go back. If you take a DNA of yourself and your father, your Y DNA will match exactly. However, the further back you go it changes, which take you back to it's origin. Enough markers will link you to someone 300 years ago.

I would also mention, the R1B1A2 wouldn't separate you from Britain or France as that is the area this would come from. If you have that but all your family came from Australia for example, the test will say Britain/France as areas you most likely come from. I'm surprised it distinguishes France and Britain, to be honest. That's a tight pattern.

Ancestry doesn't feel the need to inform their members of new features. I guess they figure that since genealogy is a hunt anyway we're all good at ferreting out new features on the site. and yes I'm being sarcastic.

If you step back one level in the forums to http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.dnaresearch/mb.ashx you'll see a forum about the atDNA results as well as one for what is jokingly referred to as their "ethnicity results". The members who participate in those forums generally keep each other informed about new things we discover on the site as well as things like GEDmatch which fortunately are out there to fill the voids that Ancestry can't seem to fill. There are a lot of interesting threads on both forums.

Be sure to post your GEDmatch kit# to the appropriate thread so others can see if you're related. you'd be surprised at how many of us are even if the relationship is somewhat tenuous.

OK, I went to Gedmatch and they gave me instructions to download my raw data from Ancestry!!!!!?????
Why didn't I know that Ancestry offers us our raw data now? Could they have included that in one of their "Exciting New Matches" emails? I'm on their site every day, I never saw any announcement. How long has this been available?

This is from Gedmatch:
1. Log in to your Ancestry.Com account
2. From the Ancestry DNA status page, click the link 'manage test settings'.
3. On the 'manage test settings' page, click the 'Get started' button on the right under 'Download your raw DNA data'.

I did all that and now I'm waiting for them to fully process my file, about 72 hours.

THANK YOU DPotts57, if you hadn't suggested Gedmatch, I never would have known.

Do you know of any other spreadsheets or programs that can utilize the Ancestry raw data besides Gedmatch?

I really have to come out of my cave more often...

Again, Thank you thank you thank you!

It's still working fine for me but it's annoying that it doesn't remember your last search. If I put a name in, click a tree and view the match, I have to start a new search instead of seeing the rest of the matches with that surname/location. A rather minor annoyance but if you are looking at a lot of matches, it gets tiresome.

The problem is we don't know if this inconsistency is due to them doing a phased rollout (i.e. a few at a time) or differences in browsers that they have not addressed yet (see my prior message on that). Therefore, all I and those who have it working can do is tell you what we've noticed, and it may or may not apply to your specific situation.

The good news is that it works for those of us who have it, which means this is way beyond the experimental stage and should be working for everyone soon.

David Mc

Great news!
AncestryDNA has 78 new DNA member matches for you!
Whether it's a 1st cousin or 5th cousin, new DNA matches can be exciting leads!

These are Ancestry's TOP 14 "matches" for me, so typical of what I get with every new "EXCITING" email:

Confidence: Moderate:
No family tree, Last logged in Dec 9, 2012
No family tree, Last logged in Apr 19, 2013
No family tree, Last logged in Apr 26, 2013
Confidence: Low:
2 people, Last logged in May 6, 2013
369 people (all from Mexico)
4 people, Last logged in Jan 15, 2013
Confidence: Very Low:
No family tree, Last logged in Mar 31, 2012
No family tree, Last logged in Apr 26, 2013
1789 people, PRIVATE
No family tree, Last logged in today
No family tree, Last logged in Jan 15, 2013
4 people, Last logged in Sep 3, 2012
3 people, Last logged in Jul 13, 2011
No family tree, Last logged in Apr 21, 2013

This is what you call exciting?? I bet you enjoy watching paint dry too.
I guess most of them paid for and took the test by accident? (by force? they just enjoy spitting in tubes? They're ALL adopted?)
And they actually log in to......um....why?
I know my family is a few sandwiches short of a picnic, and the AncestryDNA test proves it.

I'm seeing it now in IE9 on all filters (All, Has a Hint, Starred, Not viewed), but I have to REFRESH the screen AFTER selecting the top filter.
I'm not sure how useful it is as yet. I tried searching for a couple surnames and it gives me a list but the surname I'm looking for is NOT in the matched surnames nor is it in the person's full tree. I tried with the "similar names" option and that was useless.
Tried without that "similar names" option and got one match to a private tree...so sent them a message to see if there is really anything useful there.

Barbara

I just added the IE Tab extension to my Chrome and the search is appearing when I use that app. I didn't have to change anything with its settings, but you can adjust the properties to use older versions of IE.
