Why do I get contradicting mtDNA Haplogroup results?

Classification: Query
I have had my mtDNA tested at two different testing labs (one being ancestry.com). Ancestry.com put me into the Haplogroup M and the other service identified me as I4a. I don't think that these 2 haplogroups are even related outside of Africa.

I am wondering if there is a logical explanation or did one of the testing facilities get it "wrong"? Does anyone understand mtDNA results and haplogroup assignment well enough to shed any light on this?

One interesting note on Ancestry.com where I am assigned to the M Haplogroup ... most of my closest matches are classified as being in the I Haplogroup. Is that strange?

thanks ...
