Yes, Scott. Mutations are truly random and can occur in a single generation, although that is rare. I have heard instances of a son having two mutations from his father, and others where there are no mutations in 6 or 8 generations, so predicting the number of generations between two men and their common ancestor can be very tricky indeed. That is why a good traditional paper trail must work hand in hand with genealogy.
