Schmalstich
Hello,
I'm researching my maternal line, which includes Heinrich (aka Henry) Schmalstich. He immigrated to the US in 1852 at age 12, and settled first in Newark, NJ, and then Brooklyn, NY. He was supposedly a hunchback, so was not involved in the US civil war.
The only area of Germany I've found this name is Hanover. I believe he and his mother, Sophia Schmalstich, left via Bremen, but I'm not sure. His mother remarried soon after arriving in the US, so I'm wondering if she had family/friends in Newark, NJ?
His father's name was also Heinrich Schmalstich. I've found a family with this name in NJ, but they are distant cousins. Anyone have anything on them in Germany?
Any ideas on how to proceed in Germany?
Thanks.
Kristen Drake
