YOUNGSTOWN, OH – John Allen McMillan Sr., 91, was born on Dec. 2, 1921, to Nellie and John McMillan in Florence, Alabama.
He enlisted in the Army and served four years during World War II and received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star.
He returned home and married Pearl Jean Brooks.
They relocated to Struthers, where they raised three children.
John worked for Republic Steel Company as a Pipe Tester for more than 30 years, retiring in 1986.
John was an active member of the Phillips Chapel C.M.E. Church in Youngstown, Ohio for more than 50 years, where he served on the Trustee Board.
He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6488 in Youngstown and faithfully served the post in a number of capacities for many years including Post Commander.
John enjoyed barbecuing, traveling, taking care of his home and visiting with his many friends in Youngstown.
Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Nellie; stepfather, Lock T. Beachum; his second wife, Elizabeth McMillan; his older brother, Alfred B. McMillan; his half-brother, William “Roy” Beachum; and two half-sisters, Dovie Blackburn and Ovelia Brock.
He leaves to mourn his death his children, John A. (Millie) McMillan Jr., Yvonne (Darryl) Brake and Yvette McMillan of Akron, Ohio; his brother, Lock P. (Janice) Beachum Sr. of Youngstown, OH; grandchildren Andre McMillan, Stacey (Ricardo) Myers, Nikiya McMillan, Michael (Angela) Brake, and Daren (Alaina) Brake; 14 great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Ada McMillan; and a host of nieces, nephews and other loved ones.
Services will be Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at the Phillips Chapel C.M.E. Church, 718 Albert St., Youngstown, OH 44506.
Calling hours 10 a.m. to noon with the home going services beginning at noon with Minister Carol Hewlett officiating.
The VFW Post 6488 will conduct a service from 11:15 to 11:30 a.m.
Interment will be at Tod Homestead Cemetery in Youngstown.
