WATSON

I am looking for the family of Willie Fred Watson. I know this is a long shot but I have a need for information on this family. Willie Fred Watson was the son of Jake and Mahalie Head Watson, Willie Fred was born April 26 around 1900 in Birmingham, Alabama. The Watson Family livied at 609 4th Ave North, Birmingham, Alabama, from my research I know that, there is still a neighborhood in that area, I would like to know if there is Watsons still living at that residence, and if they are related to Jake, Mahalie and Willie Fred Watson. At one time Willie Fred Watson worked for Alamba Highway exp, 912 5th Ave North, Birmingham, Alabama this might have been around 1900.
Willie Fred Watson died in Atlanta, Georgia around 1944. There is much more to this story I have been two years just sitting and researching Willie Fred Watson.
If there is anyone related to or know this family please email me very inportant.
I am so sorry this is such a long post but I had to put this on this board and pray for information.
Thanks in advance for any information.
Take Care
Dorthea Rogers
rdorthea1@cs.com
FROST slaves, Shelby County and Choctaw County ALABAMA

In 1820 on the Shelby County Alabama census, Hannah Frost is a widow with children and holds 7 slaves. They would have been brought with her from Madison County Alabama to Shelby County Alabama when she moved in 1818/1819.

Before the move to Madison County, she lived in Rutherford County Tenn and before that time in Anderson County Tenn. She sold a slave to her brother Benjamin while she was a resident of Rutherford County in 1806/1807.

Hannah Wilson Frost died in Shelby County, Alabama and had an estate recorded here in 1839.
Her estate papers list the following eight persons by name:
a. Silvie and her little boy Harvey
b. Lucy
c. Winnie
d. Jasper
e. Newton
f. Solomon
g. Moses
Court records indicate the slaves were kept by the family and not sold at auction.
Ten years later, in 1850, her sons are indeed listed on the Federal Slave census:
1. Jesse Frost, still living in Shelby County, Alabama in 1850 with
a. 35 year old black male
b. 23 year old black female
c. 4 year old black female
d. 2 year old black female

2. John Aaron Frost, who had moved to Choctaw County, Alabama by 1850 and later would
move to Mississippi:
a. 31 year old black male
b. 28 year old black female
c. 10 year old black male
d. 8 year old black male
e. 6 year old black male
f. 3 year old black female
g. 1 year old black male

3. Benjamin Frost, who moved briefly to Mississippi, and then to Dallas County Texas by 1850:
a. 33 year old black male
b. 17 year old black male

Hannah Wilson Frost had two daughters who also may have inherited one or more of the original eight slaves listed on the inventory. From 1839 to 1865 is a long time and their slave children may not have kept the Frost name , as the girls married men named Meroney and Johnson and moved from Shelby County.

There were a lot of slaves owed by other Frost families just south of Shelby County in Bibb County. I don't know anything about those families. There were no other Frost families in Shelby County during slavery.

I see Rosetta Frost, born about 1844, Eugenia Frost, born about 1869, and Jacob Frost, born about 1855, are all living in Beat 6 in Shelby County in 1870, but since all were born after the 1839 inventory, I don't know their relationship to the original eight persons listed on the estate inventory.

By 1860, the one family owned by Jesse Frost has increased by one child:
a. male, 46 b. ( female) 32
c. female, 14 d. female 11 e. male age 6
Jesse Frost and family ( 18 children) remained in Shelby County, Alabama. His wife's maiden name was Harless.

I hope the above is helpful. If I can assist anyone with this family, write me at GoneToAla@aol.com.

Hannah Wilson Frost had a brother Benjamin Wilson who is my ancestor. His plantation was next
to hers. I live in the log home he and his slaves built in 1817 so the Frost family slaves would have been in my house during their lifetimes. Hannah Wilson Frost's uncle Henry HARLESS Jr. owned a large plantation north of Montevallo and was a large slaveowner.

Irene & Celia Cromaty Injured, Mobile, AL 1908

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper, April 8, 1908

"During the lightning storm of Saturday night two negro children were injured, neither seriously, it developed yesterday. The negroes are Irene Cromaty , aged nine years, and her sister, Celia Cromaty , aged sixteen years. Both were attended by Dr. James H. Thomas , who pronounced the injuries of minor importance.

"(They) live on the west side of Lafayette street, at the head of Conti street. Five or six members of the family were sitting in the kitchen when the storm was raging. A vivid flash lighted up the entire interior, but no marks were visible where the lightning struck the house. It is believed that the lightning struck the ground near the building

"Irene Cromaty was injured about the head, probably when she was thrown to the floor from the shock. Celia Cromaty had her hand and arm badly burned. The others in the kitchen escaped injury."

Not my line, just sharing.

Alycia LONG Allen 1951-2007 b. Bessemer, Alabama

Alycia Long ALLEN An adored and devoted daughter, sister, niece, aunt, second Mom, Godmother, best friend, visionary educator, administrator, community leader, accomplished award winning creative artist and intensely dedicated UNC Tar Heel fan, Alycia passed away suddenly from complications of diabetes at the age of 56 on December 18, 2007. She was born November 2, 1951 in Bessemer, Alabama, the eldest child of Roy Long, Sr. and Ineva Hughes. She grew up in Seattle, WA where she moved with her parents in 1953. Grade school for Alycia was Sacred Heart Villa (now Villa Academy) followed by Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart High School graduating in 1969. She attended Spelman College in Atlanta, GA from 1969-72 transferring to University of Georgia where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1975. From 1975-1998 she became a prolific educator in the Carrboro City Schools system in Chapel Hill, NC. Alycia loved and valued teaching, first in the middle school, then the high school where she positively touched many lives. She was highly respected and her constant passion was her students. Alycia was born to be an educator, it was her calling and she honored it everyday of her life. She mentored young minds to develop their artistic potential in art history, visual arts, drama, dance, pottery and photography. After Dean Smith, people would exclaim that Alycia was the second most popular person in Chapel Hill. Picture the enthusiasm she brought to cheerleading as high school coach, yielding their numerous championships specifically National Champs, as well as choreographing and co-producing thirty-eight musical productions while at the high school. Of her many cherished awards and honors were her Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools NC Teacher of the Year 1996-97; Fulbright Recipient for Caribbean Studies in the Arts 1997 and her 2005 honor in Chapel Hill as a Hall of Fame Inductee. In 1999, Alycia was joyous at the opportunities presented in this next chapter in her life. Recruited back to Seattle to manage and develop Paul Allen's Experience Arts Camp (EAC) programs at the Experience Music Project (EMP), she embraced the role of Director of Education and Director of EAC. She delighted in programs that enabled 7-18 year old students' artistic exploration and self-discovery. In 2001, she returned to her alma mater, Forest Ridge as Director of this all-girls High School. There she brought dignity and expectations of excellence to everyone she touched. In addition, she guided the positive developments and functions of all of her students to find their voice as young women, or as she referred to them, her "kids". Fiercely loyal and devoted, Alycia gave of herself 24/7. She gave freely and passionately, loved deeply, and gently marked all she touched. Alycia never expected anything in return, but relished a simple thank you. She was humble, kind, had a great sense of humor and deep-rooted values of fairness and integrity. Her biggest dream was to teach at the Oprah Winfrey Academy in Africa this summer where her incredible mark would have made a difference had she gone. She was asked to spend two years at Oprah’s school but her commitment to Forest Ridge prevented her from going to South Africa at that time, but was definitely in her future plans. Her family, which was the pride of her life, is grateful for having had this beautiful woman in our lives. We miss her dearly; as will the global community. Alycia is survived by her mother, Ineva Hughes, father, Roy Long, Sr. (Joyce), brothers, Rod, Chris (Antoinette), Roy, Jr. (Rosie), Sisters, Susan Long-Walsh (John) all in Seattle, Metre Long Wishom (Clyde) of Murrietta, CA, step-sisters, Janis and Sheila Murray, Alabama, sisters, Carol Oliver (Nathan) and Janice Orange (Ronnie), countless uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins, her goddaughters, Rachel Blue Biesemeyer of Denver, CO, Kaitlin "Bear" Carr of Tallahassee, FL and her East Coast surrogate mom, Lillian Lee of Chapel Hill, NC. A Celebration of Her Life will be on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church, 3416 E. Marion St. Seattle, WA 98122. Forest Ridge High School in Bellevue, WA is starting the Alycia Long Allen Scholarship Foundation for students of color to continue her mission of giving all young women their voice. www.forestridge.org. Please sign Alycia's legacy site at http://alycia.legacy.com. The family wishes to acknowledge Southwest Mortuary for the love and support shown to us, as they are family as well.
Published in print from 12/30/2007 - 12/31/2007.
REGISTER OF BIRTHS-Another place to look for family members

When I was on a research hunt in Lowndes County, Alabama a few months ago, I went to the Archives in Montgomery, Al. While searching for other information I ran into microfilm with REGISTER OF BIRTHS. I started searching through it and came upon family members births between 1910-1915. I found people that were born that were never mentioned or on census records and the ones who they said were born and died who no one remembered their names. This is a gold mine of information for us. I don't know if all states have them but it is worth checking out.

They have questions on the form like this:

NAME OF CHILD
DATE OF BIRTH
MONTH
DAY
YEAR
A.M
P.M
PLACE OF BIRTH
COUNTY
CITY OR TOWN
STREET AND NO.
WHITE
BLACK
MALE
FEMALE
LIVE [BIRTH]
STILL
SINGLE
TWINS
TRIPLETS
PRESENTATION [TYPE OF BIRTH]
HEAD
BREECH
CROSS
LEGITIMATE
ILLEGITIMATE
DURATION OF LABOR
FULL NAME OF MOTHER
AGE
COLOR
BIRTHPLACE OF MOTHER
OCCUPATION OF MOTHER
NO. OF CHILD OF MOTHER
NO. OF CHILDREN OF MOTHER NOW LIVING
NUMBER MARRIAGE OF MOTHER
FULL NAME OF FATHER
AGE
COLOR
BIRTHPLACE STATE OR COUNTRY
OCCUPATION OF FATHER
NO. OF CHILD
NO. NOW LIVING
NO. OF MARRIAGES
REPORTER'S NAME
REMARKS

It is on a long form. Try and find this REGISTER OF BIRTHS for your State and County. The information if very useful.

Rachell

Bryant family in Alabama (?)

Looking for any information possible for my father's side of the family. His name was William Bryant. He said his mother's name was Virginia..but that is questionable. Family were possible coal miners who ended up in Smithdale Pennsylvania around 1930. He had a daughter Margaret Louise with a Alma Murphy in Pennsylvania. She is buried in McKeesport Pennsylvania. If any of this sounds familiar to anyone please contact me. Thanks. myveryown1@gmail.com

African American Olivers From Tallapoosa County

While traveling the journey of researching my family tree, I've recently found that my ggg grandmother's name was Charlotte Oliver. She had a daughter Arie and a son named Jacob. There was a mention of a John Oliver as well, but I'm not sure of his relationship to her. Charlotte was married to Isaac Oliver according to the 1870 census, but family tradition has always been that her children were fathered by the man who owned the family. As both Arie (my gg grandmother) and her husband Sanders Price died here in Akron Ohio, I obtained a copy of their death certificates which gave me the parents' names for both of them. There also seems to be an affiliation with the ALLEN family of Tallapoosa.

One of the stories that have passed down in my family is that the ALLENS and the OLIVERS (slaveowners) joined their farms to create one large plantation and I'm trying to find information to either prove or disprove that story.
ARIE (my ggrandmother) went by the last name of ALLEN. On her death certificate here in Ohio, her father is listed as JOSIAH/JOSHUA ALLEN. Her marriage certificate also lists her surname as ALLEN.

I'm looking for any old family records or documents that can assist me in my search.

If anyone has any information or can point me in the right direction, please post here or email me at anita_hewett@sbcglobal.net

Key/Keys Family of Bullock County

I am researching the Key/Keys Family of Greenwood, Bullock County AL. My great-great grandfather Charles Key b. 1832 in Fairfield County SC settled in Greenwood and married Elsie b. 1848(?). I do not know her maiden name, but I am told that she may have been Native American and he white or mulatto. They and four of their children (Alex b. 1858, Estelle b. 1871, Olivia b. 1876 and Benjamin b. 1878) appear on the 1880 US Census (Ancestry.com) as Frey. Charles has descendants still living in Bullock County. They descended from his sons Alex who married Ella Gholston, and Augustus 'Gus' Keys b. 1875 (?) who married Amy Green. Charles had several other sons William Key b. 1872 (m. Lucy Jerrido) and Eddie 'Jack' Key b. 1875 (m. Maggie Hill) who made their homes in Macon County, and Charley Key (m. Cora ) moved to Marion County, WV. Charles' daughters Estelle m. Jim Johnson and Olivia m. James Taylor. He also had two other daughters, Sarah b. 1874 (m. George Smith) and Queen Esther b. 1881 (m. Huey Bennett). I have been told that Charles' offspring are by two women. Confusing? If anyone has information about them, please contact me.

Thanks,
Lora
JACKSON surname - Covington County, Alabama

We are researching our JACKSON descendants from Covington County, Alabama. We have a special interest in the Pea Ridge Community of the Conecuh River Township in Covington and Conecuh Counties, Alabama. These areas had a large percentage of mulatto slaves prior to the Civil War. After slavery, these people settled together and married.

Many of our descendants lived in Covington and nearby counties before the Civil War. After the Civil War most “Jackson’s” continued to live in Covington County, Alabama well into the late 1930’s. Our search also extends to Escambia and Oskaloosa counties in Florida, where many residents from Covington traveled in search of employment, while others went to Ohio and Detroit, Michigan during the mid 1930’s.

We would love to correspond with others that are researching families from these areas with the Jackson surname and surnames connected via marriage. Please note we do not have much information to assist you with in regards to the surnames connected by marriage.

Thank you in advance for your invaluable help with our family quest.

Sharon

Gilmore / Granger / Teague / Clarke / Saffold / Foster Families of Alabama, Georigia, New York, Barbados, and Trinidad

Greetings,

I'm looking for more information about my family members

My Mother's side:

My mother was Dorothy Beatrice Gilmore (maiden Name) - Married name (Sanders) Born June 30, 1952

Her mother was Mamie Granger (Maiden Name) - Married name (Gilmore) and later (Dodson) I believe. Born some time in 1924.

Her Father is Freeman Gilmore born Feb. 7, 1922

Mamie Granger's mother was Clarkie Mae Teague (Maiden Name) - Married name (Granger)

Mamie Granger's dad was someone with the last name Granger, possibly a Charles (Unsure).

Clarkie Mae Teague is said to be related to a Charles Teague of the New York Teagues. This side of the family is both black and white.

Freeman Gilmore's father was born Charles Clarke but I am told he changed his name to Clark Gilmore to avoid going to prison for murder in Barbados. I do not know how true this is, but I did note changes in his first name on Census records. Possibly born in 1897.

Freeman Gilmore's Mother was an Ida Foster (Maiden Name) - Married name (Gilmore). It is also unclear if her name is Foster or Forester. Family insists it is Foster, but it is listed as Forester on Freeman's birth certificate.

It is believed within the family that Clark Gilmore was from Barbados and Ida Foster was from Trinidad. However on Census records it does not indicate that they were from either place and states they were born in either Alabama or Georgia.

My Father's Side:

My father's name is Ronald Saffold
His mother's name is Willie Nell

If you have any information to add to our family history, please let me know. :)

Thanks,
Tressa
Angie/Angeline Witherspoon of Marengo County

Does anyone have information on Angie Witherspoon, born 1865 to the parents of Jacob and Patsy Witherspoon? She had two older brothers, Frank and Thomas, and a younger brother, Jacob. She married Dick Hudson on February 14, 1880. I am trying to confirm that the Dick Hudson she was married to is Richard Hudson, Jr. that was born to Richard and Milley Hudson, as well as her date of death. All of the details that I have mentioned were found in the 1880 census as well as a copy of their marriage certificate.

African-American Family History Posted

With my family tree on Ancestry.com, I have posted the history of my family which migrated from Russell County, Alabama and Muscogee County, Georgia to Birmingham with the following primary surnames: Bellamy, Chadwick, Dunn, Haines, Hancock, Hughes, Mabry, Newsome, Simpson and Todd.

My family is huge, so I encourage everyone to review the family history. There just might be a connection -- Black, white or Native American.

Steve Townsend
Digging For My Roots

My family research involves Monroe and Conecuh Counties in Alabama.

My Monroe County (Beatrice, Turnbull, etc.) heritage begins with:
Onie and William (Buck) Cunningham. Their daughter was
Mary Cunningham, the mother of Lula Lett. Lula married Will Pierce, son of Mary Pharr or (Farr).

My Conecuh County (Evergreen) heritage begins with:
Hannah Cluff or Clough. Her daughter was Nellie Cluff wife of Robert Matthews. Nellie's daughter Carrie is my grandmother. She was the wife of Richard Curry. Richard was raised by his mother and stepfather, Toney & Easter Sasser.

The surnames Clough and Pharr are spelled according to the wishes of who ever was recording the records. I've seen both names spelled many ways in limited census information.

If you can help me with either side of my Family Tree, I am eternally grateful for whatever support I receive.

Thanks so much

NS
Turner Family in Clarke County

I am the great great granddaughter of Talton(1856) and Willie(1868)(Pace)Turner. They lived in Coffeeville in the late 1800's early 1900's. About 14 children(Britton,Sydney,Henry,Susie,Tellie,Pollard,Elmore,Edward,Marybell,WillieArc,Gylie,Hartley,Furney,Clemants,Talton). Talton died in 1913 and Willie remarried Milton Turner. She later died in 1939. Both past in Clarke County. I am the great granddaughter of their son Elmore Turner born abt 1896 unsure of death date but past away in Bessmer,Al. He moved to Bolivar County Ms. With his wife Beatrice Malone Turner Sutton and six children(James,Mary,Cora,Willie mae,Louise,Sarah).
Talton Parents were Abraham and Sylvia Turner. That's all the information I have on them.
Willie Pace parents were Henry Pace(1842-1931) and Susan Dunigan(1852-1938)both of Clarke County. According to Susan death certificate her parents were Mary and Louis Dunigan. I am trying to located the decendents of Talton and Willie Turner. Or get information regarding either the Turner,Pace or Dungan family.
