Re: seeking african american Hamans in Arkansas
Mrs. Hamans was my cousin -- she was no less than 80 when I knew her. Amazingly, a friend brought me her obituary today so that I can copy it. I remember Mrs. Hamans from my childhood -- we had to call her Mrs. Hamans. Her grandchildren came to Warren for summer vacation almost every summer. I especially remember Alexander Holland but I can't find him. Are you researching Emma or Jefferson? Jefferson was one of the founding trustees of Walters Institute, the private AME Zion high school that predated the public black high school. He was a great supporter of education. I am researching Walters Institute so that's why I am looking for Emma's grandchildren. There are still two students living. One is having his 95th birthday party in July in Warren.
Emma's grandmother, Hettie Corrothers, is my great-great grandmother; they're from York County, South Carolina. Emma had a piano room with a baby grand piano in it.
Jefferson Hamans still has descendants in Arkansas.
The 1962 funeral program lists her daughter Mary Elizabeth Holland of Lincolnton, NC; a sister, Mrs. Bessie L. Johnson, New York City; brother, William S. Miller (Uncle Will to us), grandchildren, great-grandchildren; one step-daughter, Mrs. Statori Boulware, Chicago, Ill.; six-step-sons; and a host of other relatives and friends. If you want a copy google my name -- Kathryn Fitzhugh, and email me, okay?
Happy researching. Kathryn Corrothers Fitzhugh,
