Rosa Akins Wright

Rosa Akins Wright wrote songs and played guitar for her children, who sang in churches, nursing homes and hospitals as the Wright Spiritual Singers, later the Echoes of Joy. They recorded their first album in 1956, and found careers in secular music - the kind that Rosa Wright wouldn't allow in her home.
Rosa Wright was a deeply devout woman who always cared for others, first as a domestic worker, then as registered nurse. But whatever else she did, she spent most of her 85 years in prayer and song.
Gospel music by groups like the Dixie Hummingbirds, the Soul Stirrers and Shirley Caesar filled her homes in the James E. Scott housing projects, later in El Portal. ``Her entire life was in church until she couldn't get there anymore,'' said Betty --
Born Bessie Regina Norris -- Wright's seventh child.
``Even in her room in rehab, she had gospel on the radio. . . She'd hold onto her walker and do her little shout and step.''
After Rosa Wright died of diabetic complications on Sept. 5 at North Shore Medical Center, loved ones -- including most of her 41 grand and great-grandchildren held ``a giant celebration, full of music and life'' at Bethel Apostolic Church, Betty Wright said. ``We sang her into glory. She was going home to her Father,'' as the last of nine siblings.
Born Rosa Lee Akins on Oct. 3, 1924, in Cairo, Georgia, she came to South Florida after a racial incident involving her brothers drove her extended family out of town in 1936. They were well off, and had to leave their farms and possessions to start over at the bottom in Perrine, then Overtown.
She was married three times: to Milton Wright Sr., whom she divorced; to McArthur Norris then to Jimmy Braddy, who both died.
After Rosa graduated from Miami's segregated George Washington Carver High School, she traveled by three buses daily to care for families in Miami Beach - where black people could only go to work, and only if they carried a police permit. ``She once had an incident on the bus like Rosa Parks, when I was a baby in her arms,'' said daughter Jeanette Wright of Miami, formerly with KC and the Sunshine Band. ``It was 1949 or '50,'' added her older brother, retired Boston Municipal Judge Milton Wright, a choir leader and playwright. ``My mother told us where to sit, on the side. The bus driver turned around and said, `Why you sittin' on the white people's chair? You got to move to the back.' He pulled the bus over and got up to move her.'' Rosa Wright would not be moved. ``She stood up with her little umbrella. We all stood up. Somebody white yelled: `Can't you see her with all them children?' We never sat in the back of the bus.''
While she worked, Rosa Wright studied nursing at what was then Miami-Dade Junior College, Betty Wright said. By the mid-1960s.
Rosa was working in pediatrics at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
The family's spiritual home base was the Pentecostal Firstborn Church of the Living God, demolished by Interstate 95 construction.
She ushered at Bethel Apostolic, where she worked with children, Jeanette said.
She was also a nurse in the Miami-Dade public schools, in pediatrics at Jackson Memorial Hospital, and at the Douglas Gardens Jewish Home.
After she retired from nursing, Rosa Wright went on the road with Betty, doing whatever she could to be helpful.
In her last days, she told her children to stop all treatment, because she was ready to go.
In addition to Betty, Jeanette and Milton, Rosa Wright is survived by sons Phillip and Charles Wright of Miami, former calypso musicians who played with the Afro-Beats. She was predeceased by son Michael and daughter Barbara. He served as Justice of Peace, 401st district, Tattnall county, 1824-27, and held the same office in the 662nd district, Lowndes county, 18301841.
Does anyone know this family? The 1920 census has them living in this area. Their names are Dock (1876), my grandfather, Luvenia (1876), my grandmother, Willie, Fred, James and Matthew, my uncles and Cora and Josephen, my aunts, (1901-1914). My father's name was Freeman (1915). I am looking for any living relatives. They may have lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fl for some time. Records show them living in the Liberia section, which may have changed names over the years. My father and uncle Fred, may have moved to Vero Beach, FL as this is the last known address on my father's death certificate. Can anyone help me as I have been searching for quite some time. Please email me at dcmonroe@verizon.net. Thank you.

Thomas Gatrey - Baldwin / Mobile Counties (Alabama)

Good Morning, Im trying to help a friend of mine, Foy Edward Thomas III (whom i requested to be added to this group) with his brick wall :

Thomas GATREY - from Baldwin/Mobile, Alabama area born pre-1870 (African-American)

This is the ggf of a friend of mine looking for info. His son, Mason Gatrey, Sr. married a Beulah Thomson and he was probably born around 1920. Living in Calhoun County, FL areas too.

Please let us know if you can find Thomas Gatrey, Sr on census record, and vital records.

Ive been able to find Mason Gatrey, Sr listed with his wife Beulah Thompson on a death record for their daughter Juila Voncille Gatrey in 1950 on Family Search. But this name is going to have multiple spellings because of how it sounds. In fact, I saw a Julia Guitrey in LEE County, Al in 1900 Census. He is not sure if his ggf was enslaved in SC, but if so, this lady might hold a clue.

Leakesville, MS might be an expanded are and i have been helping him in between my own family searches, so i havent found anything on surface and not had time to dig deeper and he is relatively new to genealogy.

I can be reached at annehuffman01@gmail.com

Thank You

To all the Nay sayers! While I can only go by what I have seen. You make the call. As a 17 year old boy in Florida, I sat and talked with Charlie at least 8 times while I travelled from FT Myers, Fl to Starke, Fl and back. This was in 68/69. Charlie told me he was not sure of his age, but then showed me two papers. One was his release from the military in the Civil War, the other was a paper issued at the same time that said he was a free man. I have no proof of these documents, but I believe Charlies accounts. He told me he had been a slave and was from Africa. He loved Coke in the 6 ounce bottles and chocolate candy bars. I just knew him as a very nice man. It was 3 or 4 years later that I read about him in a World Record book. He was listed as the oldest but with no verifying documentation. I remember people giving me the "sure you did" look when I told them about it. Maybe Charlie lied. I prefer to believe Charlie! I remember the time when you took a man or woman at their word. Years have passed and my mind is alittle grey, but I do remember his smile. It was beautiful and honest.. I saw it each time I stopped as he would hand me a soda pop (as he called them) and said "sit down here boy and we's kin talks abit"! :-)

I am looking for information on my GGG Grandfather, Berry G. Jackson, alias Berry Clyatt. He was born a slave on the Samuel Clyatt plantation b/w 1849-1852 in Levy County, Florida. I have record of his father being J.P. Clyatt (possibly the J stood for Jackson?) and mother Hannah, but I also have record of him saying his master was his grandfather. Samuel had two sons (one of them had Jackson as a middle name) If anyone has information about Berry or if he (or his mother) might be listed in any of Samuel Clyatt's papers, I would appreciate it! (I have posted on the Jackson and Clyatt boards also)

Au contraire! I wrote "descendants of former slaves". I did not imply that he was enslaved. In the absence of official records many people embellished their histories. Arson has been committed on numerous County Courthouses in unsuccessful attempts to conceal heritage and/or crimes.

Re: Charlie SMITH - 132 yrs old July 4, 1974 in Bartow, Florida - b. Liberia

I don't think you understand...Charlie Smith was a LIAR. He was NOT A SLAVE.

Read his stories...he claimed to have fought in the Civil War, rode with Jesse James and Billy the Kid, hung out with Buffalo Bill, etc.

He was an attention-seeker, and was born in the 1870s, after the Civil War.

His own marriage certificate from 1910 put his age as "35" in 1910. He did not concoct his extreme age claim until 1955, when he claimed to be "113". The story continued for decades, and developed into American folklore, much like "Old Tom Parr" in the UK, who claimed to be "152" in 1635.

Other "cultural apocrypha" stories have included the "Last Civil War veteran" Walter Williams, who claimed to be "117"(also not true). The 1860 census put his age at 105.

This has nothing to do with "slavery," it has to do with telling tall tales.

The maximum proven age for a male is just 115.69 years, and for a female is 122.45 years. Ol'Charlie's age claim is far beyond the realm of plausibility.

I suggest you read this article here:

http://gerontologist.oxfordjournals.org/content/22/6/532.sho...

The most honest answer ("how old are you?") for many descendants of former slaves is: "I don't know!" In the vast majority of cases, they were uneducated! In fact, it was unlawful to teach slaves to read/write. Many ignored the law but it did not make a significant impact on literacy. The Social Security Administration's research was not valid. Better records were kept on thoroughbred horses than slaves! There could have been several Charlie Smiths on those plantations, at the same time, and none were related by blood! I agree with your research/logic.

This is a false claim. According to the 1900 census (you can check! It's on Ancestry.com!), Charlie Smith was born in 1879 and was thus just 95 years old when this story fabrication came out.

Charlie's history of age inflation began early. By 1910, he was "35" in his marriage record, having already added five years to his age.

Miami Dade College was established in 1959 and opened in 1960 as Dade County Junior College. The original campus was located at the recently built Miami Central High School. The campus consisted of a portion of the school and an adjacent farm. In 1960, a facility was built on an old naval air station near Opa-Locka Airport (known as Amelia Earhardt field), which would soon become the College's North Campus. The College enrolled African American students and Cuban exiles who could not afford other schools, becoming Florida's first integrated junior college. As the college grew, a temporary satellite campus opened in what is today Pinecrest at Miami Palmetto High School until the new South Campus (later Kendall Campus) was built in Kendall. Later renamed Miami-Dade Junior College, its two flagship campuses expanded and enrolled more students, eventually outgrowing the University of Florida and Florida State University. After some time, college president Mitchell Wolfson Jr. envisioned a campus at the heart of Downtown Miami, and in 1973, the Wolfson Campus was built. The College changed its name to Miami-Dade Community College around the same time.

Source Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami_Dade_College

Thanks very much for your input. I wish I could find something on Andrew's mother. All I have is that her birthplace was NC.

Here's what I have about Amanda Simms:

She was born around 1847 in Georgia, lived in Live Oak with Andrew Jones.

I found an Amanda listed in the 1870 GA census, about age 20. She may have had a sister ("Georgia")Simms, age 14. Georgia's parents' birthplace was listed as GA, but Amanda's- unknown. The two women may have worked for Francis J. Abbott, age 49, born in Canada around 1821. His wife: Mary A. Dutton born in GA.

My gg-grandmother Amanda was married to Andrew on 1-21-1874 in Rankin, Noxubee county, MS. If you have anything else to collaborate with this info about Amanda, I'd appreciate it.
