Long-time Eagle River resident Bessie Mae Chatman passed away peacefully on Friday, January 18, 2013. She was born August 19, 1929 in Lee Pope, Georgia.
Bessie moved to Alaska in October of 1965 and retired from the United States Civil Service on Ft. Richardson. She successfully owned and operated Betty's Jewelry in Eagle River and Anchorage. She was a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary and the VFW Eagle River Branch. Bessie joined the Eagle River Missionary Baptist Church in November 1986 where she served as a member of the trustee board and as a member of the mission department. Bessie loved to fish, play pinochle and dance. She was a special person who loved life and was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Bessie will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Bessie is survived by her son Leon J. Chatman and daughter-in-law Tammy Chatman; grandsons Leon J. Chatman, Jr. and Lowen Chatman; granddaughters Te'ana Chatman-Nealy and De'Anna Martinez; great-grandsons Louis Martinez, Johnny Martinez, Leon J. Chatman III, and Henry Hale IV.
A celebration of her life will be help Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at Eagle River Missionary Baptist Church, 16050 Lesmer Court in Eagle River. Pastor William Greene will officiate. Viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Arrangements were made with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapels.
