Hello, I am looking for info on a mulatto/black family orginating from Georgia. In 1839 I believe in Cass or Carroll County a C.G. Heickman or Hickman was born. According to a 1880 Census his father was from Georgia & his mother from Ireland. I beliebe his fathers name may be Wren Heickman or Hickman or either Pascal. Anothe clue it this Pascal married an ex-slave who was free by the Georgia Legislature. I am lost as I was told by family members that Wren was the son of Pascal(Pascal was a Portugese immigrant) but the census recoreds which I found bear no such names. Any information on any of the parties would be greatly appreciated.

PLEASE HELP!! African-American Oliver/Roebuck/Eldridge in Georgia and South Carolina

This may get a little confusing so please bear with me. I am brand new to this whole genealogy research thing!

I am searching for descendants of Squire(b.~1862,SC;d.1926,Hart Co.,GA) and Sarah Alice Roebuck Oliver(b~1870, Anderson Co.,SC;d.1952,Hart Co.,GA). They were my maternal great-grandparents. I am eagerly searching for the descendants of their children, with the exception of their youngest child (James D. Oliver-my grandfather).

Squire and Sarah's children were:
Robert Oliver (wife: Ida, unknown maiden name)
Alice Oliver (husband: Alex Williams)
Thurmon Oliver (wives: Bertie Holland and Sallie Rucker)
Nettie Oliver
Lola Oliver (husband: Lenton Gary)
William Oliver (wife: Sallie Scott)
Annie Oliver (husband: Robert Jones)
Jeffrey Oliver (wife: Ceola, unknown maiden name)
Beausee Oliver (wife: Lucille Wakefield)
Claudia Oliver(husbands: Clarence Curry and Marrcell
Mauldin)
James D. Oliver (wives: Naomi Roebuck and Alice Hill)

, all Oliver (children) born in Georgia, maybe Moss/Elbert/Smith/Hart counites.

Also searching for parents of Squire and Sarah Alice Roebuck and their descendants.

The earliest record I have found for Squire Oliver is a census from 1880. He is listed as the nephew of the head of household (Robin Eldridge;b.~1820 in VA and wife: Katy, unknown maiden name;b.~1825 in SC). Their is a Lou Oliver(b.~1838,SC) listed as the sister of Robin Eldridge. I can only presume that she was Squire's mother, as well as the other Oliver children listed on the census: John Oliver, Liza Jane Oliver, and a male Lize Oliver. There was also a nephew, Ampy Oliver(?), listed on the record. Squire Oliver died in 1926 in Hart Co., GA.

All I know about Sarah Alice Roebuck Oliver is that she was born to a slave, Celand Roebuck, and an unknown white Union soldier in Anderson Co.,SC in 1870. Sarah Alice Roebuck Oliver died in 1952 in Hart Co., Ga. Celand also had a son, Maylon Roebuck, whose father is unknown. Celand Roebuck was also born in South Carolina.

ANY information or direction is most welcome and appreciated!!!! With all of these relatives, it's hard for me to believe that I am having trouble finding records! If you can help, please email Chante' at SINGCL6@yahoo.com

African American HAWK family in Walton County, GA

In search of African American HAWK families. I am a g-grandson of GREEN HAWK m. LOVINIA HAWK. After the Civil War, Green was a sharecropper working on land from Hillsman Hawk's estate. Later around 1895 he purchased 123 1/2 acres in the same area near Sandy Creek. He passed away in 1912 and is buried in Ivey Cemetery. His wife Lovinia passed away in 1916. They had many children. John, William, Lou(ise?) .I 'Thompson', Mary Frances 'Harris', and B (Their names were not identified in any census data while living with their parents), Andrew Cornelius, Homer, Green Jr., Ardless Benjamin (my grandfather), and Adley. I have not collected information from the 1930 census, but there are still a good number of Hawk family members living in Monroe, Atlanta. This line also migrated to Michigan in Detroit, Flint, Port Huron. We have one in Toledo, OH. We also have families in Sacramento, CA. If your research takes you back to the turn of the century 1900, then you can validate this information. I also have information posted on The Walton County website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawalton/. I also posted some Hawk/ MALCOM slave data under miscellaneous link.

African American Coney and Stanley

Frank Coney b. 1862 married Alice Stanley b. 1866 on Nov. 22, 1882 according to the marriage certificate. They had several children(the spelling may be incorrect on several names. The names were spelled differently on the various census sheets.): Ruibin b. 1883; Lizzie b. 1885; Polly Ann b. 1887; Elvenia b. 1889; William E. b. 1891; Ida b. 1892; Alex b. 1894; Lila b. 1900; Lula b. 1902; Latha b. 1907; Samuel b. 1910; and Clarence b. 1911.

It appears that Elvenia/Lovoenia married a Will and had the following children: Milton b. 1912; Eddie b. 1914; Evie Mae b. 1921; Nora Bell b. 1924; Dan b. 1925; Randal b. 1926.

Alex/Allec married Annie May (no last name available for Annie) and had:
Allec, Jr. b. 1918 and Georgia May b. 1919
Samuel married Anah (no last name available for Anah) and had:
James b. 1925; William b. 1928, Lugenea b. 1930 and Rose M. b. 1931.
..There may have been additional children for any one of these families. Also, the birth years may be off 1-2 years. The Census sheets did maintain some consistency with the birth years.

I am a direct decendant of Alice Stanley's sister, Sarah. If anyone has any information on this family, please reply to this thread. I found the marriage certificate two years ago while visiting Georgia. There are so many other missing links to our family tree. There are currently 8 generations beginning in 1820 in Dodge/Laurens Co., Chauncey, Eastman Georgia area.

Thank you so much
Sandy
I was able to track my family back to the Butler plantation.

Please contact me if you can track your family to either of Pierce Butler's plantations (Butler's Island and Hampton Point Plantation [St. Simon's Island] both of the coast of southern Georgia).

Surnames listed above are the names some of the slaves took after Emancipation.

Henry SIZEMORE shoots and kills African-American John WARE in Chattahoochee County, 1899

“Fatal Shooting At King’s Mill.

“Mr. Henry SIZEMORE Becomes involved in a Difficulty With John WARE, Colored.

“Geneva [Talbot County], Ga., April 27—News has just reached here of the shooting and fatally wounding of a negro, John WARE, by Mr. Henry SIZEMORE at King’s Mill, in Chattahoochee county, just west of Box Springs [Talbot County], Ga., yesterday. One ball entered the right side, struck a rib and glanced around, coming out in the back; the other hit squarely in the upper part of the stomach and went entirely through the body. Parties from there say WARE cannot live. No arrests had at that time been made. The negro says there had been bad feeling between him and Mr. SIZEMORE for some time. Recently two of the SIZEMORE brothers, he claims, met him on the dam at King’s Mill and thrashed him. Yesterday he says he challenged Mr. Henry SIZEMORE, when alone, to fight it out fist and skull, and upon attacking him was shot by Mr. SIZEMORE. Parties here have two 38-calibre balls that passed through the negro. One of the balls is badly mashed.”

[Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Friday, 28 APR 1899, p. 7. An identical article also appeared in the Weekly Enquirer-Sun on 06 MAY 1899, p. 6.]

“SHOT THE NEGRO.

“Mr. SIZEMORE Would Not Fight ‘Fist and Skull.’

“GENEVA, Ga., April 28—Mr. Henry SIZEMORE fatally shot John WARE, a negro, at King’s mill, in Chattahoochee county, about nine miles from here, yesterday, both balls passing through the body. They had had a difficulty, and the negro, it seems, was worsted. Yesterday he approached Mr. SIZEMORE and proposed that they fight it out fist and skull, and upon being attacked, Mr. SIZEMORE shot him. No arrest has been made.”

[Macon (GA) Telegraph newspaper, Saturday, 29 APR 1899, p. 5.]

I believe the above man to be Julius Henry SIZEMORE (ca. 1849 GA – aft. 1880), son of Wiley & Mary (ASKEW) SIZEMORE, who m1. 20 SEP 1874 in Chattahoochee Co, GA, to Frances “Fannie” HALE (ca. 1852 GA – aft. 1880), and is said to have m2. Cynthia HESTER. I believe he appears in records as Henry and is the only man known by this name in the area during this period. In 1880, Henry and Fannie were farming in Ft. Perry District in Marion Co, GA. According to my record, their son William J. SIZEMORE (b. ca. 1875 Marion Co, GA) died in Macon, Bibb Co, GA, so perhaps one of the following is one of Henry’s wives:

“SIZEMORE.

“Mrs. J. H. SIZEMORE died at her home, on Hanson Avenue, in South Macon, at 6:20 o’clock last evening. She was 50 years of age and had been in bad health for several months. She leaves one son, Mr. G. W. ARRINGTON, of Macon, and a daughter, Mrs. Walter FLOWERS, of Palatka, Fla. She was a consistent member of the Primitive Baptist church. The funeral arrangements will be announced later.”

[Macon (GA) Telegraph newspaper, Monday, 09 DEC 1907, p. 3.]

“Mrs. J. H. SIZEMORE.

“Obsequies over the remains of Mrs. J. H. SIZEMORE took place yesterday afternoon at Mount Waverly Baptist Church and the interment followed at Cedar Ridge Cemetery. Many relatives and friends of the deceased accompanied the remains to their last resting place.”

[Macon (GA) Telegraph newspaper, Tuesday, 10 DEC 1907, p. 3.]

“SIZEMORE.

“While preparing the noon meal yesterday [Mrs.] J. H. SIZEMORE, residing on Clinton street, East Macon, was seized with an affection of the heart, dying a few minutes afterward. Medical assistance was summoned, but the lady had passed away before the physician reached her. She is survived by her husband, J. H. SIZEMORE. The body will be carried to Juniper [Marion County, near the line with Talbot County], her former home, this afternoon at 1 o’clock for funeral and interment.”

[Macon (GA) Telegraph newspaper, Tuesday, 11 APR 1911, p. 11.]
Africana Heritage Project Seeking Descendants from Drayton Family Plantations

Hi Everyone,

It's Toni Carrier from the USF Africana Heritage Project, writing to report that the Magnolia Plantation Foundation in Charleston, SC, is funding a project for us to conduct research in Drayton family papers, to reconstruct the family lineages of enslaved communities on Drayton family plantations.

This is the first time a former slaveholding family has ever undertaken or funded genealogical research in their family papers. We are profoundly grateful to them, and we would like to hear from descendants. The Drayton family held plantations in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Texas.

You can read about this groundbreaking research at the follwing URL:

http://www.africanaheritage.com/Lowcountry_Africana.asp

If you know or feel that your family has roots on Drayton family plantations, please do contact us. We would like to welcome you to the group and learn about your family's history.

You can contact us at toniheadr@aol.com or info@africanaheritage.com

Best and Peace,
Toni
www.africanaheritage.com
Jacob and Anna Harmon looking for more info...

My name is Jean Stevens and I have recently moved into a home in Covington Ga and have discovered that next door to where I live which is now the home of our sub-division pool there is a wooden fenced in area that contains 3 cement above ground graves, 2 adult and 1 small grave of which I have recently found out that they belong to Jacob and Anna Harmon and apparently on of their children. The graves are very old and worn and hard to read. I was told by our Commissioner's office that the 2 adults are Anna and Jacob which you can read the names(barely) but they do not have much information on the baby grave. They assume it belongs to possibly an infant that had died at birth. I do see 3 of the girls she gave birth to died at a very young age so I am wondering if possibly it belongs to one of them and why is there only 1 infant grave?? I am in the process of cleaning up the area and I would like to get as much information as I can so we can put a plaque up in the area so everyone can read and know the history behind the graves. For some reason I feel impelled to find more information. Unfortunately the pool area where these graves are had not been kept up by the previous Homeowners association and the pool is basically destroyed and I would like to at least preserve and clean up the gravesite area just out of respect if nothing else.

Thank-You for any information you can forward to me.

African Americans in Baldwin County, Georgia (1837)

The following is a list of slaves contained in the inventory of William Whitaker’s estate in Baldwin County, Georgia (Milledgeville) during 1837. All of the slaves were divided up among his children over a number of years after his death. Some of these African Americans remained in Baldwin County, Georgia while some went to neighboring Wilkinson County, Georgia. Others went to Mississippi and South Carolina. The younger ones were born in Georgia and the older ones in either South Carolina or Virginia. The information transcribed below comes from Our Children’s Ancestry, by Mary Cantey Whitaker Allen, (pages 138-139) and is available on line at Ancestry.com’s public Family History site. There is a total of sixty-two, ranging in age from less than a year up to 60 years. Three of the children and their mothers are tied together. Some of them retained the Whitaker surname, but most of them assumed other surnames. I hope this information will be helpful to any African American researching their ancestry. It was helpful to me:

Whitaker Slaves in Baldwin County, Georgia (Salem Community) 1837

NAME	AGE	PRICE

Dave	55-60	450
Amy	58	250
Wiley	27	1000
Dinah	43	350
Bonds	17	1000
Betsey	9	400
Caroline	7	400
Eliza	5	350
Cater	22	1000
Cater's Mariah	3
Jinney	20	800
Jinney's Frances
Emily	34	800
Emily's Mary
Edmond	17	800
Dick	15	900
Amy	13	650
G "C" reasy	11	500
Bitty	9	400
John	7	450
Ned	5	300
Rasha	3	250
Elvira	19	1000
Floi(y)d	1	0
Fanny	32	100
Lewis	13	800
Harriet	12	800
Robert	9	500
Alfred	6	400
George	4	300
Smith	2	175
Meser 0
Bob	31	1000
Marion	30	700
Henry	13	800
Dave	11	700
Ann	9	600
Mitchel	7	500
Martha	3	300
Flander	22	1200
Lucy	25	800
Driver	8	450
Julian	6	400
Susan	3	250
Ellick	26	1000
Charity	23	1000
Anderson	7	400
Hector	5	300
Louisa	3	250
Hector	55	350
Binah	55	200
Pomp	24	900
Henry	20	1000
Jerry	16	800
Jess	41	800
Annie	39	700
Isaac	55	150
Isaac	50	450
Abraham	43	900
Annie	31	1000
Aaron	26	1000
Peter	19	900

Hello my name is Terri, I'm 17 and trying piece together my family history. I've gone back as far as my great-great-grandfather and my father's side, which I'm pretty pleased with since I have absolutely no help from my family. I could use some help, though.

I'm trying to find out more information on my great grandfather FRANK FORD. I believe he was born in Georgia around 1898 but lived most of his life in Florida. He died in Crawfordville Florida in 1984. He married MAGGIE GREEN sometime between before 1920. Maggie was born in Florida, her mother CILLA was born in Florida and her father NASSAW (MORAN) was born in South Carolina. I don't know how many children they had, but one was my granfather WILLIAM H FORD, born in 1919. He married MARLENE (JONES?)

This is all I could find.
If anyone has any information or clues to help me out that would be great.

Porter Boyer ex-slave mulatto Baldwin/Hancock County

My family has recently undertaken the huge task of researching our family history. We are descended from a ex-slave mulatto by the name of Porter Boyer (1845-1925) who resided in Baldwin County Georgia. My family has done quite bit of research on all of the descendants of Porter and his wife Georgeanne (also a mulatto from Baldwin County Georgia). However, we run into some difficulty in finding Porter's mother and father and his siblings. We suspect that he was actually born on one of the Boyer plantations in Hancock GA and later migrated to Baldwin.

I have heard stories that Porter and his mother were freed before the war and that he had other siblings (both white and mulatto). Are there any persons who can trace their lineage to Porter and his wife? Does anyone know if he had siblings and who are their descendants?

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

In the 1850 Slave Census there were 3 BENTLEY slave owners with male slaves that were 8 years of age. Two were in Lincoln GA and one was in Troup GA. Does anyone out there have access to wills that may have named their slaves? I would appreciate any help I receive.
