African American Essays Wanted

Are you a man, woman, teen or child of African descent who has been torn by society’s expectations of race and class? Have you found yourself developing different personalities in the workplace, in the church, in the neighborhood, in the classroom, with your family and with your peers? Are you struggling to find your true self that is comfortable in all settings and situations?

Tresconsciousness, or triple consciousness, is the idea that Blacks in America are always torn between the ideals of three distinct communities: Eurocentric America, the Black upper middle class community and the greater Black community. As an African American develops their personal identity we are striking a balance between each of the three aspects of ourselves.

A new anthology, The Three Minds of Black America: Tresconsciousness and the Twenty-First Century is calling Africans, African-Americans, Blacks, West-Indians, Native Americans and others of African descent to share a personal essay within this collection.

For a sample essay, frequently asked questions, and submissions guideline please visit our website: http://sites.google.com/site/tresconsciousness

Direct questions can be sent to thethreeminds@gmail.com .

The Deadline for Submissions is: June 15, 2009

Please forward widely.

Island Mound-1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: 09-12-08
Name: Donna Gregory
Phone: 660-679-8230
Email: donnag558@yahoo.com
Bates County, Missouri to honor
1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry
and the Skirmish at Island Mound

BUTLER, MO- - Bates County is host to one of the most historic battles in Civil War history and commemorates the first military engagement by Colored Troops with a special monument dedication. The dedication and unveiling of the memorial statue on the Courthouse Square will commemorate the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry. Included within their ranks was Cherokee Indian, John Six-Killer. In October 1862 these men courageously fought and died while engaging the Missouri Confederate guerrillas in the Skirmish at Island Mound in Bates County. The Volunteers lost eight men, one of whom was John Six-Killer.

The Border War between Missouri and Kansas was ignited with the passage of the 1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act. The cauldron of tensions along the border simmered and by the time the Civil War began, they boiled over. Hog Island, three miles long and one mile wide, was a bushwhacker stronghold. The landscape of the county provided ample coverage for the rebel partisans, and the mission of the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry was to clear-out the rebels.

“The Skirmish at Island Mound occurred on October 29, 1862 in Bates County, Missouri. What gives this skirmish added significance is that it marks the first time that black soldiers engaged in combat in the Civil War. That black soldiers were fighting Missouri bushwhackers a full two and a half months before the Lincoln administration had authorized the enlistment of black fighting units is typical of warfare along the Missouri-Kansas border where there was seldom a rule book to guide the actions of either side. The Battle of Island Mound received national publicity and shined a bright spotlight on the nation’s first black soldiers and the courage they had shown that October day. Prior to the battle, many in the North doubted that black soldiers had either the courage or ability to engage in combat against white foes. The skirmish at Island Mound laid that myth to rest.”

Bates County is proud to remember and honor its past. The people who endured this time and place are a testament to the American spirit. Not only was the county the site of the first military engagement by colored troops, it is also the only county in the history of America to have all its citizens forced to leave their homes. In August 1863, Order No. 11 was issued, the county depopulated and homes torched. Remembering our ancestors and honoring them for their sacrifices gives even greater meaning to the high cost of freedom and liberties enjoyed today by all Americans.

The weekend-long events kick off on Thursday, October 9, with a special presentation from Jim Denny of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. He will speak at the museum about the Missouri-Kansas Border War and Island Mound. Events on Saturday, October 11 begin at the museum with a biscuit & gravy breakfast, a caravan tour of Island Mound which will be followed by a discussion of the event. A parade on the square begins the afternoon activities which include historical military scenarios, music, games, Civil War reenactors, stagecoach depot visits, living history demonstrators, tours of the Courthouse, shopping, plus lots of food. Continuing on Sunday morning, October 12, an African-American Gospel Church Service will be led by Reverend Larry Coleman at the Fairgrounds. This historical weekend concludes Sunday afternoon on the Butler square with the dedication and statue unveiling on the north side of the Courthouse. A Color Guard processional will signal the beginning of the ceremony which will include special guest speakers and dignitaries, music, a military honor volley, and the playing of Taps. To get a complete schedule of the events visit www.batescounty.net or contact Pat Decker at the Butler Chamber of Commerce at 660-679-3380 or executivedirector@butlermochamber.org

Preston

Hi,

I am hoping to connect with someone researching the following family:

Jacob HARRIS born ~1814 in North Carolina married Charolette (STEWART), also born in North Carolina ~1816. They had the following children:

Debra?
Wilson b.~1840 in NC
Harden b.~1842 in NC
Dorena b.~1844 in NC
George b.~1846 in NC
Henry b.~1848 in NC
Elizabeth b. 29 May 1849 in IN
John b.~1852 in IN
Sabrina b.~1853 in IN
Alexander b.~1857 in IN
Amanda b.~1859 in IN

Elizabeth married Henry TRIBBLE in 1879 in Vigo County, IN. Alexander married Queenester "Queen" MANUEL on 01 April 1883 and Amanda married Stolford MANUEL on 23 December 1879.

Aside from what I have learned from census records and what I have posted here, I know very little. Elizabeth, along with her husband and two of there children eventually relocated to Washington State, supposedly she had a cousin in either Yakima County or Kittitas County.
I may have duplicated this message, but does anyone have any Prestons that may have migrated to/grew up in MA during the 1920/1930s? I am trying to find my grandmother who worked as a domestic. She had my father in June 1931 but he became a ward of the state when he was about 3 months old. Her name was Martha, but may have used a nickname or other.
Every little bit helps!

RICHARD GIVENS & LIZZIE JOHNSON GIVENS FRANCIS

Please forgive this lengthy inquiry. I am stumped in trying to find out further information about my paternal great-grandparents, Richard GIVENS, and Lizzie JOHNSON GIVENS FRANCIS (she acquired the surname Francis by way of her second marriage). Firstly, I am trying to find out when and where my great-grandmother died. I am also trying to find out the same information about my great-grandfather, who was her first husband, in addition to his finding out about his antecedents.

My great-grandmother, Lizzie Johnson Givens FRANCIS, was born in Cynthiana (Harrison County), Kentucky around 1870. Her parents were John and Kitty JOHNSON, of Harrison County Kentucky. Lizzie Johnson Givens Francis married twice - - the first time in 1900, to Richard GIVENS, and the second time in 1912, to Henry FRANCIS. Both marriages were solemnized in Harrison County Kentucky. I have copies of the marriage certificate for each marriage. Lizzie Johnson Givens Francis had two sons with her first husband, Richard Givens -- John, born about 1900-01, and Harold, born about 1903. In the 1910 U.S. Census, she indicates that she is "widowed." As earlier stated, she married for the second time in 1912. Her second husband, Henry FRANCIS, was at least 10 years her junior, and was reportedly from Woodford County Kentucky. She migrated to Dayton (Montgomery County), Ohio with her second husband, Mr. Francis, and two sons sometime after 1910 and before 1919. Mr. Francis died in July of 1922. I find no further record of my great-grandmother after the death of her second husband. Her last known address, as given on her second husband’s death certificate in 1922, was 51 Miller Street, Dayton, Ohio. My late father indicated to me that his grandmother was thought to have passed away in the years before he was born in 1932. In my research I found that Lizzie was sometimes referred to/recorded as Elizabeth Francis. Both of Lizzie’s sons, John and Harold GIVENS, remained in Dayton, Ohio, until their deaths. Harold died in 1932 and John died in 1960.

I have found no evidence of my great-grandmother’s demise in either Ohio or Kentucky. Because I am not sure when my great-grandmother died, and no one else in the family has this information, I checked to see if she was listed in the 1930 U.S. Census. I found nothing.

As for my great-grandfather, and Lizzie’s first husband Richard GIVENS, born about 1870, I find no record of him before, or after, their marriage in 1900. The 1900 U.S. Census indicates that his birthplace was somewhere in Kentucky, but I have no other source information at this point.

I have found three other individuals named Richard Givens of African-American descent in Kentucky during the early part of the last century, but none is a match. One of them has ties to Cynthiana, Kentucky, but he was born between 1818-1825. Another Richard Givens shares the correct age range, but he was apparently born and resided in or near Lexington (Fayette County) Kentucky. This Richard Givens was listed on the U.S. Census in 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930. Yet another Richard Givens was found, but he was born around 1835-1840, was listed as living in Lincoln County Kentucky.

Thank you in advance for reading through this inquiry, and for any advice, information, or assistance that you anyone may wish to offer in helping me to further research this matter. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Aaron and Roberta (nee JACKSON) BANKS

I am doing some research for a friend and his maternal grandparents are Aaron and Robert (nee Jackson) Banks. They had 4 children: Douglas, Clarenca, Velma, and Prince. I found them in the 1930 census living in Dallas City, Texas. Aaron was a packer in a flour mill and Roberta appears to have been at home. I have been able to find information on Aaron and his family back to 1860, but I can't find any information on Roberta. I know of her birth name because it appears on one of her children's birth record. Based on the 1930 census, she was born in 1895 in Texas. If you happen to have any information on either Aaron Banks or Roberta Jackson, please feel free to contact me directly at lizamlizarraga@hotmail.com or reply to this post. Thank you.

Our Sprinkle family so far goes to late 1700's in Virginia, 1800's in Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi, finally Arkansas. During this time they were slaves, soldiers, and farmers with large families. Events during these periods and up to 1900's scattered our family all over, after twenty plus years of searching for them we have been united with a few in Mississippi and North Carolina. If you have info to share please email: sprinkle@ufl.edu

He attended Dartmouth in 1862, and left for the Civil War. I am missing anything about him between 1862 and 1870 (when he was in Mississippi and listed as Mulato on the census).

Looking for other descendants of Green and Laura Gatewood. Both born in Georgia; he around 1846 and she around 1854. They had five children; John, Amos, Edward, Delia (sp?) and Mayhew, my grandfather, who was born in May of 1880. All were born in Marianna, Arkansas. Mayhew eventually married Ella (Currant or Current) Jackson and they had 15 children, between Marianna, Arkansas, Poplar Bluff, Missouri and Youngstown, Ohio. Family info says that Mayhew and Ella were members of St. Peter's Rock or Peter's Rock Church in Marianna. My grandfather lost contact with his sibs and his children, which includes my father, don't know anything about their relatives. If you are from the area or know of the Gatewoods, please e-mail me. It has been said that my great grandfather, Green, was a sharecropper; plantation owner's name is unknown. I do know that grandpa's brother, Amos, was married to a woman named Cora. Any little guess or tidbit will be greatly appreciated. I have been trying to connect our family for years. Please, please help me complete our family tree. He attended Dartmouth in 1862, and left for the Civil War. I am missing anything about him between 1862 and 1870 (when he was in Mississippi and listed as Mulato on the census). Does anyone know of William Henry? Thank you!

a friend of mine who isn't online has requested I research his ancestry. at least two branches of his ancestry are African-American. I've never researched in this area, and what I've been finding hasn't helped much.
these are the people I'm researching for him. I don't know the race of each of these people, just some of them, so I'm listing all of his known 4th generation ancestors in hopes that someone can direct me in researching the recognised African-American names;
grouped as husband and wife;

William S.
Further Search for My Great Grandfather

Robert Johnson

Lived in Hope, Hempstead County, Arkansas in 1930 with wife Hannah Hughes-Johnson, and two children

According to 1930 Census, he was 45 years old (abt. 1885), born in Louisiana, his father and mother were born in Mississippi.

His first marriage came at age 19 (1904)

Viola Brown was his niece, I have searched her and traced her to Marshall and Essie Brown (1920). Marshall was her biological father, Essie was not. Essie, and her sister Effie, I have traced back to 1900 in Louisiana, living with their mother Mollie White. They were also living in Arkansas in 1910 with Essie's first husband, Andrew? Simmons/Sims, the father of Adean Sims/Simmons.

I traced Marshall back to 1900, living with his "uncle" Robert Marzette/Marsette/Marsetta in Lafayette County, AR (where he spent his whole life). Marsetta was living with Samuel Williams in 1870 in Lafayette, AR.

I could not find any connection between the Brown, Sims/Simmons, Marzette, Williams, and Johnson names.

But heres what I do have:
Robert Johnson had at least two children in a previous marriage: Robert and Johnie/Johnny
Robert was a pastor

Also, I cannot find any death records in Arkansas for Robert, he died June 1, 1930/1931.

Hi All

I married Reginald Veasley (born chicago, IL) son of the late Thelma Veasley from Kosciusko, Mississippi and (possibly late) Charles Robertson, New Orleans, Louisianna. Reginald has 2 sisters Sandra (Niecie) and Sharon (Lynn. Thelma (Reggie's mom) father was Claude(pronounced: Claw Day- I believe) his mom's brothers Claude jr (claw day), Thomas A, Kenneth, Ernest, and Sister Mary. I do know there are many!!! Veasley's in Kosciusko. I had the pleasure of meeting many of them in August of 2005 during a family reunion. I learned there is Lovie C (Jack) Veasley & Edna Weatherly married in Mississippi.

I do also know the family is spread out Texas, Illinois, Mississippi, Tennasee, Wisconsin, & Michigan

Some other surnames: Hodges, smith, coleman, weatherly, tolbert, veasley, wilson, peterson, harris, chinn, grayson, McFarland, Harris

If you are related to any of these veasley's please reach me at tamikio@att.net or have any information on others in this message please contact me.

Jessie Morris - born:Kansas City, Kansas - Pacific Northwest

Jessie "Tweet" Ewing MORRIS 87, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday evening December 27, 2007
Born in Kansas City, Kansas to Fred Abrahm and Jessie Ewing Edwards, she was the third and youngest of three children. Following a divorce, her mother brought all three children to Portland to live; Jessie was 7 months old. Shortly afterward, her mother married Lloyd Flowers, and Jessie grew up into womanhood as Jessie Flowers. At the age of 4, she began playing the piano and organ instructed by her mother, who was an accomplished concert pianist and organist. She played in a rhythm band started by her mother, sang in the St. Phillip's choir and sometimes substituted for her mother at the organ. She was one of about 10 Black students at Jefferson High School during the 1930's and they were not allowed to take part in the social affairs at the school. However, her mother inspired her to excel in school which she did, earning 36 A's and one B and several certificates including Latin. She graduated at 16. She received a scholarship to Spelman College in Atlanta as well as Reed College in Portland. Her parents were afraid to let her go so far away at 16 to Spelman. She was the third Black woman to attend Reed College. In those days, Reed required a 95% average for admission and Jessie graduated with a 99% average. Jessie married her husband, Harold "Snooky" Maxwell Morris at St Mark's in Portland in 1942. Harold was drafted into the Army Air Forces, where he joined the 332 Fighter Group and trained as a Tuskegee Airman. Jessie followed him to Tuskegee bringing along her first born. In the Deep South Jessie experienced the dreadfulness of the Jim Crow laws. She would drink out of the "White Only" fountains in defiance for which she could have been killed. Jessie and Harold had four children and were staunch Episcopalians. As a mother and residence of the Central Area of Seattle she was one of the first Black women of the Seattle Chorale. She was a Brownie Troop leader and also worked on a committee with the City to get the Garfield Community Center and pool built. She starred in Antigone, a play put on by the Church of Advent that became so popular they eventually performed at Meany Hall. She was an active supporter of the YWCA, Jack and Jill of America, the League of Women's voters, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the local Sam Bruce Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., founded by her husband. She retired as an Administrative Specialist from the City of Seattle Engineering Department in 1980. She enjoyed traveling; played Bridge, was a master at Scrabble and had an insatiable love for reading. Jessie was preceded in death by her beloved parents; step father; husband; sister, Ida Alice (William) McClendon; and brother Fred Abe (Maxine) Edwards. She is survived by her daughters, Jessie Joy (Fred) Beckwith, Patricia JoAnne Morris and husband Sam Townsel, Stella Diane Powell (ex-husband, Lester Powell); son, Roger Stephen Morris; 10 grandchildren, Jeremy (Katrina) Beckwith, Shana Beckwith, Naomi Morris, Aurora Morris, Edward Townsel, Lexia Powell, Jessica Powell, Omari Powell, Virginia Powell and Martrella Morris; 6 great grand children, Jaden Powell, Kelton Powell, Kahlil Powell, Malakai Townsel and Jeremy K. Beckwith; and many nieces, nephews and two sisters in law. There will be a one hour viewing on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Cady Cremation Services, 8418 S. 222nd St. Kent WA, 98031.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday January 4, 2008, 1:00 pm at St Clement's Episcopal Church, 1501 32nd Ave. S. Seattle, WA, 98144, followed by a reception and catered dinner in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Scholarship Fund of the Local Sam Bruce Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen Inc., Attention Dolores Booker, 6011 128th Ave. N.E., Kirkland, WA 98033.
Seattle Post Intelligencer

Courtesy Post Only

My ancestors, as far as I know, hail from Alabama and Arkansas. Does anyone have information on the Rice family from Alabama (Huntsville)? The Rice (Julius, Pete or Armstead) eventually settled in Arkansas (Lagrange, Cotton Plant, Helena) and married Amanda Knight.

The Greens were from Demopolis, Alabama. The Rushings were from that area too. Although the Rushings were not African-American but Choctow or Creole.

Any information would be helpful.

Am hoping to connect with African-American JOHNSON descendants whose ancestors were enrolled (some were rejected) as Cherokee/Creek Freedman by the Dawes Commission in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), 1898-1907.

Freedmen were ex-slaves of Cherokee/Creek citizens.

One example is the descendants of Ben & Mollie JOHNSON and associated: Ben was enrolled as a Cherokee citizen on Dawes Commission Cherokee Freedman census card #555. He was the son of Mose & Mary JOHNSON. Mollie was the daughter of Nero IRONS and Fannie Miller. Mollie was enrolled as a Creek-Muscogee, as were her children, citizen on Dawes Commission Creek Freedman census card #558.

Known Children:

Roxsey, b. abt. 1901
Georgie Ann, b. 29 Mar 1902
Ester Lee, b. 10 Apr 1903
Idella, b. 12 Dec 1904
Mary, b. abt 1906
Ben, b. abt. 1908

From the 1910 Census-Oklahoma-Wagoner-Creek Twshp-ED 238-Sheet 11A:

Johnson, Ben head male black 35 m1 10 ok ok ok farmer
Mollie wife female black 35 m1 10 6-5 ok ok ok
Roxsey dau 9
E___ L. son 6
Idella dau 5
Mary dau 4
Ben son 1 6/12

Your ancestors would have been living, continuously, in Indian Territory from about 1867 to 1907.

Preston

Wilbur Ransom, one of Newark's best known and popular colored residents passed peacefully to the great beyond this morning (11 June 08) at five minutes of ten at the home of his mother at 17 Wright street on Granville hill, from the ravages of tuberculosis.
The deceased had been ailing, but did not until three weeks ago did he break down and give up business to retire to the home of his mother, where he spent the time outdoors in a large tent prepared especially for his benefit.
The deceased was born in Bellaire, Ohio, in 1862 and from there he went to various cities in the middle west, among them being Findlay, Ohio where he met and married Miss Ella Griffin, whose girlhood days were spent in Baltimore, Md.
To this union were born two children Gail, aged fifteen and Ralph, aged 10, both of whom with the mother survive.
From Findlay they went to Granville, Ohio where Mr. Ransom conducted a barber shop for several years finally moving to Newark three years ago where he opened the Ransom hotel on South Fourth street, No. 21 and has since conducted it in the same locality, having but recently completed a new building for this purpose.
Besides the family members of his immediate family he leaves a mother, sister, Miss Ida, living in this city at the home place, Mrs. Emma Beasley of Wheeling W.
Frank Coney and Alice Stanley

Frank Coney b. 1862 married Alice Stanley b. 1866 on Nov. 22, 1882 according to the marriage certificate. They had several children(the spelling may be incorrect on several names. The names were spelled differently on the various census sheets.): Ruibin b. 1883; Lizzie b. 1885; Polly Ann b. 1887; Elvenia b. 1889; William E. b. 1891; Ida b. 1892; Alex b. 1894; Lila b. 1900; Lula b. 1902; Latha b. 1907; Samuel b. 1910; and Clarence b. 1911.

It appears that Elvenia/Lovoenia married a Will and had the following children: Milton b. 1912; Eddie b. 1914; Evie Mae b. 1921; Nora Bell b. 1924; Dan b. 1925; Randal b. 1926.

Alex/Allec married Annie May (no last name available for Annie) and had:
Allec, Jr. b. 1918 and Georgia May b. 1919
Samuel married Anah (no last name available for Anah) and had:
James b. 1925; William b. 1928, Lugenea b. 1930 and Rose M. b. 1931.
..There may have been additional children for any one of these families. Also, the birth years may be off 1-2 years. The Census sheets did maintain some consistency with the birth years.

I am a direct decendant of Alice Stanley's sister, Sarah. If anyone has any information on this family, please reply to this thread. I found the marriage certificate two years ago while visiting Georgia. There are so many other missing links to our family tree. There are currently 8 generations beginning in 1820 in Dodge/Laurens Co., Chauncey, Eastman Georgia area.

Thank you so much
Sandy
Bill Cosby and Alvin F. Poussaint

All I can say is: AMAZING. Read the description below:
--------------
Bill Cosby and Alvin F. Poussaint, M.D. have a powerful message for families and communities as they lay out their visions for strengthening America, or for that matter the world. They address the crises of people who are stuck because of feelings of low self-esteem, abandonment, anger, fearfulness, sadness, and feelings of being used, undefended and unprotected. These issues often impede their ability to move forward. The authors aim to help empower people make the daunting transition from victims to victors. Come on, People is always engaging and is loaded with heart-piercing stories of the problems facing many communities.

www.billcosby.com
------------------

This book is amazing.
Free, Central Wiki Database for African and African American Genealogy

Hi Everyone,

It's Toni from Africana Heritage, writing to writing to share news about an upcoming project. We have been working for several months to put together a collaborative team to build a free, central Internet database for records of African and African American history and family heritage.

Our goal is to build a wiki database which anyone may add documents and images to, and which anyone may access for free, now and always. We are delighted to share the news that the vision has become a reality.

WeRelate, Africana Heritage and IDEAS4 are currently developing AfriQuest (www.afriquest.com) the free database for African and African American genealogy and history. Anyone will be able to add records and images to the database, and view the entire AfriQuest content, absolutely free, now and always.

Webmasters may also use AfriQuest as their primary database, or add the AfriQuest search box to their websites.

We will have a beta version ready in late January/early February of 2008, just a few short months away.

You can read more about AfriQuest at

www.afriquest.com

or read the press release at

http://www.africanaheritage.com/Afriquest_Press_Release.asp

We are very excited and we hope you will be, too.

The People's Archive is born!

Best and Peace,
Toni :)
Africana Heritage Project Seeking Descendants from Drayton Family Plantations

Hi Everyone,
It's Toni Carrier from the USF Africana Heritage Project, writing to report that the Magnolia Plantation Foundation in Charleston, SC, is funding a project for us to conduct research in Drayton family papers, to reconstruct the family lineages of enslaved communities on Drayton family plantations.

This is the first time a former slaveholding family has ever undertaken or funded genealogical research in their family papers. We are profoundly grateful to them, and we would like to hear from descendants. The Drayton family held plantations in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Texas.

You can read about this groundbreaking research at the follwing URL:

http://www.africanaheritage.com/Lowcountry_Africana.asp

If you know or feel that your family has roots on Drayton family plantations, please do contact us. We would like to welcome you to the group and learn about your family's history.

You can contact us at toniheadr@aol.com or info@africanaheritage.com

Best and Peace,
Toni
www.africanaheritage.com
African-American families with surname Scott

Is there anyone out there with the surname of Scott in their family: current married name, ancestor's name, or distant relatives? This is an extremely challenging name to trace for African-Americans as the Scott name reaches across the world. I do believe, however, that there has to be a connection of all African-American Scott surnames, especially in light of the research I have done since 1996.

If your last name is Scott or was prior to marriage, or if you have family or friends that are African-American with the surname of Scott, please contact me. I would like to share information and swap notes. Thanks for your time and efforts. I have been up against this brick wall since 1996.
