Ex McAfee of Mercer County Kentucky

This info is found in a book with the title "History of the Moore Family" by Gladys Harper. It is a vanity press publication, and appears to be published around 1946. As I read through this book about my white ancestors, I was troubled that the stories about their African-American friends and employees would go undiscovered. I post this in hopes it will help someone know more about their ancestor.

"When one of our negroes, Uncle Ex, died a few years ago, my half-brother, Achilles, wrote an article which was printed in the Harrodsburg paper, and which I give here to show the tender feeling our family had for our faithful negroes. (by Mary Lynn Davis Overstreet)

"Uncle Ex" - An Appreciation. - Ex McAfee, "Uncle Ex," has passed to his reward after a long and useful life and not without good influence, however lowly his position. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant" can be truly said of "Uncle Ex." He "lived with" the family of Dr. H. Clay Davis for more than forty consecutive years. "Lived with," mind you, and gave faithful service, always respectful, ever respected. How different from the present day! He was in every sense of the word a part of the household, and it was difficult of evenings to keep his children out of the kitchen or away from the cabin door when he had stories to tell. I am sure that in case of danger, "Uncle Ex" would have sacrificed himself to save one of the white children as quickly as he would to save one of his own children. "Uncle Ex" was honest, of good habits, and of even temper. I have seen him "riled" but never mad, and the Lord knows he had provocation enough from us boys on many occasions to have made most people, under like circumstances, commit murder. The worst cuss word that I have ever heard him use ws "Gonfound you." If "Uncle Ex" ever had an enemy, white or black, I am unaware of it. A pretty good record after eighty-five years of trial and tribulations. "Uncle Ex" was intensely religious, and on this account we sometimes called him "preacher." As we boys grew up and left home to go into the world, "Uncle Ex's' last admonition to each of us was, "Sonny," fear God, pray, and think of the future." Not bad advice. In the flesh "Uncle Ex" was a faithful and devoted friend and servant, and in the Spirit-land may his soul rest in peace.--Dr. A. E. Davis, One of the boys. 40 E. 61st St., New York City"

The Dr. Achilles E. Davis, who wrote this article of appreciation, was born in Mercer County and became a prominent ophthalmologist in New York City. This was submitted to the Gladys Harper, author of the "History of the Moore Family" by Dr. Achilles E. Davis' half-sister, Mary Lynn Davis Overstreet.

According to family lore, Lewis Coffee was the father of Alvin Aaron Coffey and the natural body servant of Gen. John Coffee. Alvin A. Coffey was born in Mason Co., KY 1822 and died in Alameda Co., CA 1902. Alvin was emancipated in MO in 1854 by Mary Tindall and his wife and children by 1857.

A deed of emancipation was issued in Mason Co. in 1843 to Lewis Coffee by Jacob Drake. Is this Lewis Coffee the father of Alvin A. Coffey?

Any information greatly appreciated.

Jeannette L. Molson
gggranddaughter of Alvin A.
Butler Denham-Pulaski and Madison Counties

In doing my family history research I discovered that my grandfather's mother was considered "mulatto" by her children and grandchildren. Her name was Malissa Gibson Lamb. She was born around 1876 in either Madison or Pulaski County. Her parents (according to census records) were John Gibson and Mary Ham of Pulaski County who were considered white. The Gibsons had black household servants including a man named Butler Denham (bn 25 nov 1852). Prior to living with the Gibsons, Butler lived with the Denham family in Pulaski County where there was a young white woman about his age named Malicia Denham. Does any one have any other information about Butler? Or other information about why Malissa Gibson may have been considered Mulatto by later generations of her children and grandchildren?

I haven't found any census records with her or her husband on it, but here's what I know:

-- b. in Midway, Woodford County (maybe around 1844)
-- parents: Bettie MOSS and unknown RISK
-- spouse: Robert DARNEAL (born in KY or MO)
-- children: Albert, Kevin, Lizzie, Luela and Hettie (who was born 1864, married Joshua WATSON, died 1958)

Family stories say her father was a white man (slave owner or trader) who may have been a doctor.

No idea of why I'm not finding anything... any help would be greatly appreciated.

~Lisa MB

Bruno from KY to MO to NM...

I'm looking for a Black family named Bruno who would have resided in KY prior to 1847. They had a son named Charles who was born in MO in 1847 and who very possibly moved to NM.

sorry to have to admit that I'm ignorant of how they came by the Bruno name - my only explanation would be that they were enslaved by someone named Bruno and kept that name. I realize that part of Missouri were 'free', so I'm not sure how or why Charles was born there. I also know that a lot of Kentucky farmers went to MO when their land started to peter out but...I don't know anything about this family, why they took Bruno as a name, why they went anywhere. Family stories are vague....

thanks for anything
Juanita

I am looking for information on the surname Fortson. My ggggrandmother is Lucinda Fortson (b. 1835). I have found her in the 1870 census living in Christian County, Kentucky, with three children, the youngest of which would become my gggrandmother, Georgia Holland. I also have her name (misspelled) on Georgia's death certificate. That is all the information that I can find about her. Georgia's father was Abe Holland, according to the death certificate. I can find no record of him. He is not living with the family in 1870.

I did notice that there was a W.H. Fortson living in Christian County in the mid-1800s who owned 20 or more slaves. My ggggrandmother is black. I wonder if she was once owned by this W. H. Fortson. In the 1870 census, there is a white William Fortson living near by ggggrandmother and her children. I also noted an Abraham Holland, a slaveowner, living in neighboring Trigg County.

Does anyone have any information about Lucinda or Fortsons black or white in Christian County? Fortson seems to have been a fairly common name in that county in the 1800s. I am hoping to find some links that reveal more info about my ancestor.

Thanks!

ROSIE in L & N RR in Bell Co.

My grandfather worked the L&N RR in Bell Co. The family lived in a railcar community called Page, KY. The nearest post office was Calvin, KY (listed on my Dad's b.cert.). Also, another little town nearby was Ponza. This would have been 1924-1930 timeframe.

My grandmother befriended a woman named ROSIE, whom I assume lived in the same railcar community. They were friends for many years, and communicated after my gparents moved to Rockcastle Co. Sadly, they lost touch.

I don't know Rosie's last name; all I know is that she was African-American. I think of this friendship often--I'm sure it was difficult maintaining it given the times and the fact that my gma was white. I would love to know more about Rosie, if only she could be located. If anyone should have a clue please post it here.

mel

Logantown, freed slave stlmnt., Lincoln Co., KY

Hi-I'm trying to find out some information for an elderly friend of mine who was born in Logantown, a land settlement given to free blacks after the Civil War, in Lincoln County, Kentucky. Her name is Ella Mae (Holiday) and she was raised by a white family nameD BALLARD, whom her grandparents (Jim Mullins and Nancy Cook Mullins) worked for. Nancy Cook Mullins came from Flatwoods, Kentucky. Ms. Ella moved to Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky when she was 16. She's 85 now, so she would have been born around 1920. She still owns the land sold to her grandparents, though she hasn't seen it for a very long time. Miss Ella also has strong Cherokee features, and she remembers her great grandmother being full blooded Cherokee. If anyone can help me, or if any of these name cross your lists, please advise. I think it would make her very happy...

Frank JAMES m. Viola early 1920's Benham, Harlan, KY

I am seeking information on Frank JAMES who is listed in the 1920 Lynch, Harlan County Census as a boarder in the household of Andrew HOWARD. Census also states that he was 41 years of age, born in West Virginia.
Frank JAMES and Viola (Walker?) were the parents of Edna Marie JAMES ANDREWS. Edna was born in Benham, KY on 28 March 1924. Her siblings were brother Percy JAMES and a sister, Claudene JAMES.
These are the greatgrandparents of a friend I am doing research for. She states a family tradition that Frank JAMES was of mixed race or white.
Edna JAMES, Frank's daughter, had a son named Tharis BLACK who was born in Kentucky.
Anyone have any information on any of these people?
What might be Viola's maiden name? I believe she married a WALKER, later in life.
Alice
My search is for ancestors and descendents of

James Dorsey (1858) of Waddy, Kentucky and his wife Rachel Duncan(1875) of Shelbyville. They were married February 24, 1887 in Shelby County. Rachel was related to a John Duncan, probably his daughter. James and Rachel had six children: Gracie (April,1889), Frank J. (June, 1890), Dora (May, 1892), Roberta/Birdie (December, 1894), and Evalina/Mary (April, 1897). One child died at birth or shortly thereafter.

Anderson Rucker (1850) of Benson, Kentucky and his wife Jane Johnson (1847) of Shelbyville and theri son Chester (1881) who married Roberta Dorsey and had a son Cornelius aka George Anderson (1915)

Any information you can share will be deeply appreciated. Thank you.

My Great Great Grandfather settled in Harlan Co., KY sometime between 1840 and 1850. It was a very large extended family consisting of several households, allfarms. He and his family were freemen and women.

I have about exhausted KY records for their existence. Have found land records and their existence in the 1850 census. They migrated to Grant Co., IN by 1860. They were from SC originally and also lived in NC and TN. Some were Cherokee.

Some of their names were:

Waddy Smith
Waddy or Walt T. Smith
Martha Smith
Nancy Smith
Andrew Smith
Madison
Osborne
William
Robert
Jane Marks Smith
Noah
Margaret
Mary

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Jim
