Murray Olevia Walker Murray, a native of Plaquemine, Louisiana and a resident of Columbus, Ohio was born on August 28, 1924 to the late Levy, Sr. and Mary McCoy Walker in Plaquemine, Louisiana she was reared by her grandparents, Frank and Olevia Lewis McCoy.
At an early age, was baptized by Reverend Abraham Lincoln Davis Sr. in the Mississippi River at the Point Pleasant Baptist Church.
She attended school in Iberville Parish and had a zeal for knowledge.
Olevia departed this life on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at Mother Angeline McCrory Manor.
She was 88 years old. Olevia met and married George Murray and moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, then later in life she moved to Columbus, Ohio.
Olevia was blessed to mother five children, Saundra, Tammie, Michael, Donald and Larry.
Olevia's passion in life was for her children, grandchildren, her nieces and nephews, and her neighbors. Few could equal her kindness when called upon to care for someone. Olevia was employed by RG Barry for 22 years. In Columbus,
Olevia united in fellowship with the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. H. Beecher Hicks Sr. He was from her hometown and former Principal of the High School for African American Students during the segregation era.
She continued to serve faithfully under the current pastor, The Reverend Dr. Charles E. Booth until her demise.
Olevia leaves to follow her FOOTPRINTS IN THE SANDS OF TIME: her children, Saundra (Mervin) Hines, Tammie, Michael (Darlene), Larry (Kathy), Donald; daughter-in-law, Pamela Allen; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; a devoted niece, Olevia Tatney Tucker, all of Columbus, OH; two sisters, Elvie (Thomas) Rooks, Plaquemine, LA, Mary Ann Johnson, Baton Rouge, LA; three sisters-in-law, Elaine Brumfield, Plaquemine, LA, Elaine Walker, Columbus, OH, Alberta Walker, Donaldsonville, LA; one brother-in-law, John Hall, Plaquemine, LA; one aunt, Mary McCoy, Harvey, LA; one godchild, Eola (Charles) Williams, Bayou Goula, LA; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral service Monday 11 a.m., Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 428 E. Main St.
Visitation 10-11 a.m. Dr. Charles Booth officiating. Interment Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
