Elijah Owens - "Mulatto"/Black Owens Family from Anne Arundel Co Md

Hello,

I have been researching the African American side of the Owens family. My family has lived in Anne Arundel County Maryland for the past 100 or more years. I have researched as far back as 1800 with the last family member that I have been able to find being "Elijah Owens" who was listed as "mulatto". Does anyone have any information on mulatto family members, free black Owens's in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, or Owens slave owners or slave plantations in Anne Arundel County Maryland. At this point I am stuck and don't really know where to look next. Any help or guidance that can be offered would be greatly appreciated.

Surname : "Felix"

I am researching the surname "Felix". My Grt-Grt-Grandfather William Felix, "mulatto" was born in Maryland in 1811. I discovered William on the 1800 Census at the age of 69, in Tensas Parish, in Louisiana, where MD was stated as place of birth. I haven't been able to determine which county in Maryland.

It seems as though he had migrated to Mississippi by 1840 because his children were born in Mississippi in 1840's - 1850's.

If you are an African American Felix with Maryland Roots, please respond.

Louise

searchable death index for Maryland?

Hi all,

Does anyone know if there's a searchable death index for Maryland or Baltimore city, similar to the SSDI or the Kentucky state death index? And if so, is it a segregated index?

I want to look for my great-great-grandfather's death certificate, if it exists, so I can order a copy. His name was Wesley John McCutcheon. I'm told he was treated at Johns Hopkins and died around 1925 or 1926, but was probably buried in his home state of South Carolina.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

~Lisa MB
The USF Africana Heritage Project: Maryland

Hello,
My name is Toni Carrier. I am the founding director of the University of South Florida Africana Heritage Project. Our mission is to rediscover precious records documenting former slaves and to make those records available on a free, public access internet site. Our researchers travel far and wide to transcribe records from archives, libraries and county records, before these are lost to history.
Our largest focus, however, is within the genealogical community. We recognize that the majority of the records that mention slaves have actually been discovered by folks researching their own ancestry. So many folks have these records, and wish to share them, and that is where our Africana Heritage Project comes in. Our goal is to be a central home on the internet for any and all records that document slaves.
Our website, which will be hosted by Rootsweb (God Love ‘Em), is now under construction, and we are accepting submissions from the genealogical community. We cherish our contributors. Please let us hear from you at toniheadr@aol.com. God Bless!
I am trying to find any information on my husband's (Clarence Bryant) mother whose maiden name was Theresa Selby. (Her middle name may have been Joan.) She was born in the early 1940's, married a Herbert "Carlington" or "Carrington" Bryant, (who may have been from New York, and whose mother's name was Sarah) gave birth to Clarence in 1956, gave birth to another son, Clifton, and daughter, Sheila, over the next 5 years or so. Theresa was killed in the early 1960's, my husband was about 5 years old at the time, and he and his brother and sister were then moved around from family to foster care.
Appreciate ANY information, thanks!

I have been researching, with some degree of success, the MANNS family. One of the best sources for that locality for African Americans is the Heritage CD "Free African Americans in 1850." The CD really is wonderful because it has names and historical info about those times etc.

The irony is that I could not locate my relatives on that CD but I was was able to locate them when I used the on line census and the Maryland Archieves online. And, the Enoch Pratt " Ask A Librarian" online was a BIG help to me.

Good luck in your search,
g

Richard Morris Civil War 9th US Colored Infantry Maryland

I have a document titled Evidence of Title which states that Richard Morris was a slave for life of James Morris, my third great grandfather. The reverse side of the document states that Richard Morris has been enlisted in the 9th US Colored Infantry, Company H. James Morris was from Somerset Co., Maryland. The document dates to 1864. The 9th US Colored Infantry was formed in Maryland in 1863 and disbanded in 1866. I have found a record that Richard Morris entered the unit as a Private and left as a Private. I am sending away for his Military and Pension files if any. I would love to hear from anyone on the topic of Evidence of Title documents or more about what happened to Richard Morris.

A Search for: Solider named Mahoney from Maryland-1856 (Afro-American)

I am trying to find a black/mulatto solider named Mahoney from Maryland who fathered a child in Louisiana around the winter of 1856.

My Father’s Grandparents:
James "Gus" Mahoney (St.Landry Parish) – Born Aug. 1857 was Overseer on the Chretien Point plantation, his mother may have been a slave on that plantation, she was mulatto. Also searching on information on his father from Maryland, family name came from a solider- his biological father, don’t know the first name.

Sally "Lilly" Roudalph (St.Landry Parish) – Born a slave girl in Dec. of 1863 not sure of where or what plantation, she would have been only 2 or 3 years old at the end of slavery in Louisiana.

If anyone could give me direction on where to find records or information on the Colored infantry of Maryland or anywhere, I would appreciate it. Or if you have any suggestions on how to research such information, give me ideas…. Please!
Thanks,
Yvonne Mahoney
