Major Cook: African-American b. 1808 in Virginia, d. 1872 in Detroit, Michigan

I am looking for information on the Cook Family of Richmond, VA.

My great-great-great grandfather's name was Major Cook.

He was born about 1808 in Richmond, Virginia.

He married Priscilla Bramhall in 1832 in Charles City, Virginia.

In 1848, he mirgrated with his wife and five children to Detroit, Michigan, where he worked as a shoemaker.

He died in 1872 and his wife died in 1874, both in Detroit.

This family was counted as "mulattos" or "free persons of color" in all census records that I've come across.

I am convinced however that with such a unique name, my ancestor, Major Cook, must have some connection to the family of George Major Cook, former chief of the Pamunkeys.

The photos of George Major Cook and his family (found on the freeafricanamericans.com website) bear a striking resemblence to my ancestors of that same era.

Aside from his marriage record to Priscilla, I have not been able to find any other family records on Major Cook or his family members (i.e. parents, siblings, etc.)

He is also listed on the 1840 U.S. Census in Henrico County, VA. From 1850-1870, he is on the U.S. Census in Detroit.

Whatever information that anyone might have that would shed some light on this mystery would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Sharon
I am trying to find My Grandfather, William Chase, Possibly born in Michigan in 1864-1865 and his sister Alice Chase, born in Michigan in 1871. Have no idea where in Michigan. Thier parents were William and Margaret Ann Chase. Margarets parents were, Thomas and Mary Ann Harrison,( my Gr. Gr. Grandparents.) My Grandfather William Chase may be listed as "WILLIE" and Alice may be listed as "ADDIE" That is how I found them listed on an 1880 census in Missouri. We believe they left Michigan between 1871 and 1874. The Older Chases and Harrisons were born in Canada, and we believe they lived there until at least early 1860's and possibly joined family in Michigan early 1860's. This is mostly guess work. I do not know who Gr. Grandfather, William Chases parents were, I only know Margarets. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank You for your time. Georgia (Chase) Golian

There is only writing on one of the back of the pictures, a Juliet (aka) Julie Wilson who went to school at a Hampton Middle School, possibly in Detroit? There is one photo that is rather prominent, it is of an African American gentleman with light eyes. He is a rather handsome man, alas no name listed on the back.

Please contact me, if a potential match seems evident.
The USF Africana Heritage Project: Michigan

Hello,
My name is Toni Carrier. I am the founding director of the University of South Florida Africana Heritage Project. Our mission is to rediscover precious records documenting former slaves and to make those records available on a free, public access internet site. Our researchers travel far and wide to transcribe records from archives, libraries and county records, before these are lost to history.
Our largest focus, however, is within the genealogical community. We recognize that the majority of the records that mention slaves have actually been discovered by folks researching their own ancestry. So many folks have these records, and wish to share them, and that is where our Africana Heritage Project comes in. Our goal is to be a central home on the internet for any and all records that document slaves.
Our website, which will be hosted by Rootsweb (God Love ‘Em), is now under construction, and we are accepting submissions from the genealogical community. We cherish our contributors. Please let us hear from you at toniheadr@aol.com. God Bless!
I am looking for information on the book "King Family: Kalamazoo, 1992" by co-authors Nathaniel McCaslin and Thelma King (?McCaslin also?). It regards a family of African Am. heritage in Kalamazoo Co., MI. I found a mention of the book, but have not been able to find the book itself.
