I am researching the family of my maternal grandmother. Her maiden name is Geraldine Handy and she was born in Sioux City, Iowa in 1923 however, many of her family members were born and lived in Butler, MO. Her parents were Jesse Handy born January 1884 and Vivian (White) Handy born May 1887
Here grandparents were:
Isaac Handy born Dec 1854
Nannie (Ford) Handy born March 1867
Charles White born October 1853
Minnie (Robinson) White born April 1862.

Jesse Handy's siblings were: Myrtle Handy (b. Nov. 1896), Recolia Handy (b. Nov. 1892),Verdella/Mildred Handy (b. Feb. 1871)and Orlando B. Handy (b. Jan. 1888. I beleive that Recolia married Ira or I. R. Rippatoe.

Vivian White's siblings were: Gentry White (b. August 1880), Albert "Birdie" White (b. Oct. 1882), Stella White (b. March 1885), Roscoe White (b. October 1889), Herman White (b. January 1891), Myrtle White (b. January 1896), Glenn White (b. August 1880).

Besides Butler, MO and Sioux City, IA. I know that some family members lived in Kansas City, MO; Kansas City, Kansas; Chanute, Kansas; Chicago, Illinois and possibly Arkansas and North Dakota.

I have much more information on this family and would love to hear from anyone who may be related as my grandmother is turning 85yrs old this year and would love to locate any family members that she has lost contact with over the years.

Bruno: KY to MO to NM....

I'm looking for a Black family named Bruno who would have resided in KY prior to 1847. They had a son named Charles who was born in MO in 1847 and who very possibly moved to NM.

sorry to have to admit that I'm ignorant of how they came by the Bruno name - my only explanation would be that they were enslaved by someone named Bruno and kept that name. I realize that part of Missouri were 'free', so I'm not sure how or why Charles was born there. I also know that a lot of Kentucky farmers went to MO when their land started to peter out but...I don't know anything about this family, why they took Bruno as a name, why they went anywhere. Family stories are vague....

thanks for anything
Juanita

King family--Dade & Jasper counties

Hi. I am looking for information on an African-American family with the last name of King that came from King's Point, Dade County, MO. Specifically: Gaucher King, born July 1, 1868 in King's Point, son of Sam King and Rachel Stemmons. He lived most of his life in Carthage, Jasper county. And his sister (?) Mary King-Scott, born Oct 1869. Also, their mother was either Rachel Stemmons or Rachel King (not sure which was her maiden name), born around 1827 (?) possibly in Carthage. Her father is listed as being Cuffey King and mother Martha Matlock. Her brother (or brother-in-law?) was Henderson King, also with father Cuffey King, mother unknown, and born in Dade County around 1846. Could be former slaves of King family around King's Point?

Thank you for any info you might have.
:-) Kim Scott
kay_1971@yahoo.com

A Listing of Missouri Plantations and Owners

I am looking for a list of Missouri Plantaions and a listing of the plantation owners. My Great Grandmother was the daughter of a plantation owner who married a mulatto to escape her father. She was Scotts-Irish and listed herself as Mulatto to marry my Great-grandfather. (From what family history states, her father was a real tyrant.) All of the records I've found have her listed as Mulatto, but she was white. Her married name was Ella Kinkade, and my Great Grandfather's name was Henry Kinkade (he was black and Blackfoot Indian, and served in the US Col'd Infantry under Captain William Durkee). Her maiden name was Yager, but I don't know how it was spelled. She also had a sister named Adelaide, and a brother named Bud. The plantation had 350 slaves on it.

Any idea where I could find such a list? Thanks!

If anyone has any information on this person, please contact me. Joseph was born in 1861 in Missouri, but I believe the family moved to Kansas not long afterward. Joseph served with the Lawrence Kansas Militia but I'm not sure of the dates. I do know that he moved to Alabama right before 1900 when employment in the steel mill opened up for Blacks. It was there that he met and married my great grandmother, Neely Judkins. They had 1 child, my grandfather, Charles Fitzhugh.

I'm trying to find information of Joseph and his family before he moved to Alabama. I have a photo of one of his sisters, Maggie (b. 1876). She died in Topeka Kansas. There is talk of other siblings but I'm not sure of the names. If anyone knows the family or if you're researching the family, please contact me. I'm in Ohio so any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you

Looking For Fitchue/Fitzhue Relatives in Kansas/Mo Area

I have begun the family research of my Fitchue/Fitzhue line. Since my grandfather was very close-mouthed about his father, I'm 'shooting in the dark' so to speak. Here's what I've found so far. My g-grandfather was Joseph Fitchue (sometimes it's spelled Fitcher/Fitzhugh/Fitzhue). He was born in Missouri, but the family moved to Leavenworth, Kansas while he was still a young boy. His father's name was also Joseph...mother's name was Sallie. He had several brothers and sisters:

Mariah brn. 1859
Joseph brn 1861 (my g-grandfather)
Jones brn 1864
Eugene brn 1869
Charles brn 1871
Maggie brn 1874
Franklin brn 1876
Shelton brn 1879

My g-grandfather served in the Lawrence/Kansas Militia before he moved to Birmingham Alabama around 1900 to work in the steel mill. There, he married Cornelius Judkins and they had 1 child, Charles (my grandfather).

If anyone has any information about this family or knows any of the present day family members, please post to me here or e-mail me at AWilli1513@aol.com

Thank you
Anita

.

African American Thompsons in Lawrence County Missouri MO?

At the outbreak of the Civil War, my family, the Thompsons, were farmers in Lawrence County, Missouri (in SW Missouri; county seat: Mount Vernon); they owned several slaves. After the war was over, my great-greatgranddad Gould/"Gool" B. Thompson, together with his older brother Greene B./"Greenbury"/"Greene Berry" Thompson, veterans of Schnable's/Schnabel's Missouri Cavalry (CSA), and their father George W. Thompson, settled in Marion County, Arkansas. When I was younger, my great-aunts told me that our former slaves and their families would often come to visit in the years after the war, and notwithstanding the terrible institution of slavery that had previously united them, everyone seemed to be on the best of terms, and exhibited great familial love for one another. One former slave mentioned in particular was Nancy or "Nance" Thompson. For the above reasons, I am curious to communicate with African-American Missourians named Thompson.

The USF Africana Heritage Project: Missouri

Hello,
My name is Toni Carrier. I am the founding director of the University of South Florida Africana Heritage Project. Our mission is to rediscover precious records documenting former slaves and to make those records available on a free, public access internet site. Our researchers travel far and wide to transcribe records from archives, libraries and county records, before these are lost to history.
Our largest focus, however, is within the genealogical community. We recognize that the majority of the records that mention slaves have actually been discovered by folks researching their own ancestry. So many folks have these records, and wish to share them, and that is where our Africana Heritage Project comes in. Our goal is to be a central home on the internet for any and all records that document slaves.
Our website, which will be hosted by Rootsweb (God Love ‘Em), is now under construction, and we are accepting submissions from the genealogical community. We cherish our contributors. Please let us hear from you at toniheadr@aol.com. God Bless!
