LETTER FROM DAN SMITH, JR.
Now in France and is the Regimental Telephonist

Somewhere in France, July 15, 1918
Dear Father: - Well, Dad, I received your letter and it was O.K. as I had given up hearing from you. Well, how is everything in old Nebraska City? Have you heard from will since he went to Camp Funston. I heard he was down at Camp Funston.
I made it alright with the telephone and am the regimental telephonist. Tell Sterling if he goes up to Lincoln to make good. I have not heard from any of the boys on the team being over here, so I guess there are not any of them over.
I supposed Hodge Ellis is the next to get one, I guess. Say, has anybody heard where ray is, is he in the army? I am going to try and get a furlough next pay day and go to Lyons or Nancy as they won’t let us to to Paris, but we can go anywhere else.
Today is Sunday, also French Independence Day, and there is going to be all kinds of cannonading, but we do not notice the celebrating as the big guns are shooting all the time.
Well, Dad, I have no news to tell you over here and what would be interesting to you we cannot write in a letter. I am writing this on my knees and you have to make it out.
Your Son,
Dan SMITH, Jr.
Headquarters 369th R.I.U.I.S.P. 54 France
