I am drawing a blank here on those families. But we have had a great time discussing the events that led to the settlement of blacks in Essex County, haven't we?
The history of Montclair, NJis that it was where many wealthy people moved who were employed by New York companies, and wanted to raise their families in the "country". It was said that after visiting New Jersey, many virginians went back to VA and packed up everything, including servants, and moved north. Afterward, they were called upon by others to send back home to VA for relatives who could also come north to work and would feel more inclined if they already had kinfolk working in the town already. There was a famous slave whose owner grant deeded him some property, the Howe House, which is a national treasure in Montclair today. Alice

Some of my Haley/James family members migrated from the Fauquier County, VA area and ended up in the Newark, NJ area. I know my great-grandmother still has family out there but I've never met them. Feel free to check my tree for connections. Anyone know why a lot of families in VA migrated to NJ in the first place??

I can't add anything about the Jackson families but I can confirm that the 1840 Anthony A. Jacobus was the grandfather of the 1850 AA Jacobus. Henry Jacobus (b. 1815) was the son and only living child of Anthony A. Jacobus by his first wife Annetje Van Blarcom who died around the time of Henry's birth. Anthony died in 1850 I believe. He has a recorded will. His widow was a Mary Van Houten. Henry had several sons and I am descended from one.

Helen Boyden

Hi Elizabeth-
You have posed an interesting query. You have probably already checked the 1840 Census Index and seen that there aren't any people with the Jackson surname (white or black) listed as living at Livingston.

I found only one black household at Livingston in the 1840 Census- the head of household was Cornelus Blanchard; there were three boys and three girls all under age ten and a man and woman both aged 36-55. I couldn't find a black Cornelus Blanchard in any later census in NJ.

There were other free blacks (a total of 7 including the Blanchard household) at Livingston in 1840 living in the households of the following individuals:

Anthony A. Jacobus
Joseph Wilson
Jeromiah Mitchell
Davia Burnit
Parker Teed
John Roe
John Ely

There was a black Jackson family living at Livingston in 1850- Henry (30, farmer) and Clarisse (29) Jackson and children: Watson (4), Charlotte (1) and George L. (14), all born at NJ. They are living on the farm of Henry and Mary Ann Jacobus. Henry and Clarisse Jackson might be the family you seek. In the 1850 Census Henry and Mary Ann have a son, Anthony A. Jacobus; in the 1840 Census there was a free black woman listed with the Anthony A. Jacobus household and one of the white men was elderly. Perhaps young Anthony was named for a grandfather who died by 1850? Not proof, of course, but suggestive. I only took a limited look at the available census data, but it seems that it would be worthwhile to look further.

I do not know if there was ever a quarry at Livingston, but there were active quarries in two neighboring places: the Oranges and North Caldwell. There was also a quarry at nearby Little Falls (Passaic County) and there might have been others.

I hope this helps. Regards- Bev Crifasi

My father was a Moton from South Carolina, his father Henry Moton was a slave until he was 12 years old, on Seigler's plantation in South Carolina. Henry Moton had 2 sisters one brother. Henry's father's name was Chester and his mother's name was Susanne. I am searching also for more information. I know their are some Moton's from Germany, who own a racing car shop, I also know that the word Moton derived from possibly Morton from Italy, France and England. Our relatives migrated north also. Some Pittsburgh, New York and Connecticut. Thanks for you help.

The family of Willis and Eliza (maiden name unknown) BANKS moved from Lunenburg County, VA, to Morris County, NJ, before the turn of the 20th century. They had 11+ children, most of whom were sons. Are there any descendants of these BANKS looking for information, willing to share information, or seeking cousins? :)

Regards,
Sandra

Bev, thank you for your fast and accurate response. My
brain must be mush. The man I am tracking was in Livingston
in 1836, but by 1840 he was in HACKENSACK, BERGEN Co.
I am hoping you are as knowledgeable about that area since
NJ is a small place (I grew up there). I am looking at Thomas
Jackson, 24-36, free male of color with seven other people
living in his household. On the same page are a William,
another Thomas, and a Tine/Fine/Pine (not clear) Jackson,
all people of color. Still interested if there would be a quarry
in the area that 20 years later would have Irish and German
quarrymen. I am wondering if that was the occupation of the
free people of color in 1840.

I thought I saved the paper, New Jersey Herald, (Sussex County, NJ after Jan 27-before Feb 9 2007). the article focused in great length about this man, his business, his success, his family, in the earlier to mid 19th century.
I wanted to make sure if there are any of his descendants about, they might want to read about him. sorry, I don't recall his first name. I am not related at all, just wanted to put this on a post.

Hello. I grew up in Montclair. The newspapers were not segregated, and the local undertakers would have posted obituaries. The Newark Evening News was the newspaper of choice until the mid-fifties when it went out of business, the Newark Star Ledger is in existence, has good archives. It's predecessor was the Star-Eagle (My mom used to slip up and call the star ledger the Star Eagle all the time.). The Baskerville twins are still active in Jersey, Google the name. The Tates have all moved except for one older lady whose mother was a Tate. My Godmother was married to a tate and was quite famous in Montclair, but alas has passed on. I can hook you up with the one remaining Tate I have data on. The Cemetary would be Rosedale, on the border of Orange and Montclair. The Montclair Historical Society would be a good bet. The Montclair Library has stuff also. Hope this helps. I'm in CA now but you can e-mail me at alicelatouche@yahoo.com.
Regards, Alice

Harris, Dotson, Burton VA, PA and NJ

I am going a couple of different directions on this one. I am looking for the family of Albert HARRIS b. c1863 VA d. bef. 1910 His wife Mattie and children Otto, George and Myrtle settled in New Jersey. Several of the children were born in PA. Mattie's surname is unknown. Her name changes slightly with each census. This family is listed as black on the 1880 PA, 1890 PA, 1900 PA, 1910 NJ, 1920 NJ and 1930 NJ Census. However, by 1930 they are passing as White.

Otto married Gladys M. DOTSON daughter of Mr. Dotson and Emily A. BURTON. Emily A. Burton was the daughter of Moses BURTON of NJ. Emily is listed as Mulatto on one census an Black on the next. Mulatto was not listed as a choice for race on the next census. Emily A. Burton had three children with Mr. Dotson: Gladys, Howard and John. Emily A. Burton remarried a John L. Hicks. I don't know of any children with him.

I know this family must be light skinned and perhaps even today not know they are of African American descent. I only made the discovery six months ago by census records.
I would love to find related individuals. I think descendants my still reside in NJ, NY, PA or even WV.
Thanks Mara
mbruce9681@aol.com
