Clarence Harvey Craig,Jr.

Clarence Harvey Craig,Jr.
(April 15, 1941 - June 12, 2012)

Clarence Harvey Craig, Jr. departed this life on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Rockville Centre, New York. Clarence was a devoted husband and father, as well as a dedicated friend to many.
His charismatic personality, willingness to encourage and help others, and infectious laugh will be sorely missed.

Clarence, born on April 15, 1941 to the late Clarence, Sr. and Vermeil Craig,in Jamaica, New York, was the oldest of five siblings. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jodie Chatman.

He attended Public School 20 Elementary School and Flushing High School. Clarence received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Central State University (Wilberforce, Ohio) and pursued his Master's Degree in Urban Planning from Columbia University (New York, New York). Clarence also served three years in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in 1966.

While in college, Clarence was fortunate to meet Joan Watson, the "love of his life." Clarence and Joan were married in 1967 and shared forty-five years of wedding bliss. From this union, they were blessed with two wonderful children (Nicole and Erick) who meant the world to him.

Clarence was affectionately known as "Butsie" or "Craig" by his family and friends.

Throughout his professional career, Clarence was passionate in his efforts to ensure that urban residents received quality housing accommodations. He held numerous property management and development positions for which he received countless awards recognizing his outstanding service. This included New York City Housing Authority; Metro North Urban Renewal Area (East Harlem); Housing and Urban Development; New York State Urban Development Corporation; Jackie Robinson Management Corporation. In 1978, Clarence co-founded TECRA Management Corporation, which was responsible for managing 1,200 residential and commercial units throughout New York.
Prior to retiring in 2000, Clarence served as Executive Director of the Bridgeport (Connecticut) Housing Authority for fourteen years. During this period, he led the troubled Authority into financial and organizational stability by ensuring that the millions in federal and state public housing dollars were spent wisely.

Over the years this time has been spent enjoying quiet time with the family; watching TV in his man cave; traveling to the white sand beaches and blue waters of the Caribbean;attending Penn Relays; going to Central State University Alumni reunions; and having birthday lunches with longtime friends.

Clarence leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife, Joan; two children Nicole and Erick; a son-in-law, Wyane Faines; a sister-in-law, Charlene Gladstone; three sisters, Carol Johnson (husband, William Johnson), Tancene Alexander (husband, Richard Alexander) and Pamela Craig (companion, Horace Holloman); one brother, Cameron Craig; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many dear friends.

This surname has many spelling variations. The original family memeber in NYC spelled his name Montagne, and was a docmented slave owner. There is one perons of color in NYC in 1835 named Theodore Montanye, but he is the only one I have been able to track down to date.
Thank you,I do not have a census record with the family in the same household, Jeanie White is in my direct line Fannie White in the 1880 Upson county census with a child Lougenia may be the right Fannie born 1855, but no way to prove it Sallie was born about 1872 and not listed with this Fannie. Walter and Charles born 1885 and 1884 were found living in Pike county in other household as servants, Charles in the house of the Story Family and Walter in another household. Walter married Laura and lived in Pike and later moved to Hamilton county TN and died there,
Charles supposedly was in some kind of trouble when he left
and family says about age 16.
Thank you for trying to help in a possible hopeless search.
Families were so seperated and the lost of the 1890 census makes it impossible to assemle the family with only word of mouth information.
Rosa

Please add birthdates for mother, sons, and daughters? Also, where are they found on any census together? Your tree only has birth for Jeanie (1873) with no supporting census record prior to 1910. Simply trying to help!

African American Charles White, Manhattan,N Y

I am searching for information on Charles and Charolette White. He was born in Georgia 1885 and she born Georgia 1890
He left Georgia as a teenager, I found a Charles and Charlotte on the 1930 census in Manhattan N Y living as lodgers with a Clarence Kinrich/Kendrick and wife Lillian and more lodgers. I am not sure if this is my ancestor but would like to find and confirm either way, His mother was Fannie White and a brother Walter White, three sisters Jeanie,Sallie and Annie White all born Upson County Georgia. The Charles found on the census said served in war, but no luck on the New York military list nor on the list on this site. Any insight in finding them would be greatly appreciated.
Rosa Dawson

thanks for your assistance. since the help i have gone to the mass archives to search the records and to confirm what you and the other person have found.

i don't really know if he was passing for white because there are no stories. i also saw where he was listed as white on one of the certificates, which surprised me. the woman he married in 1904, katherine gallagher was white, and she and her mother were the borders in the house in boston in the 1900 census.

thanks for the assistance.

by the way, what sources did you use to find your information.

terry

Hi,

I found some of the same information that your other source found. I found a death certificate for Charles H. Logan in 1908 in Boston, MA. I also saw the death records for the two infants, Charles W. Logan(1895) and Percy S. Logan(1893). I also saw the marriage record for Charles H. Logan to Katherine Gallagher. Was your great grandfather passing for white sometimes? On the death record his race is listed as black. On the marriage record it was listed as white with the same parents( William Logan and Catherine Dowd) that were on the death record. One of the infants, Charles W. was listed as white on his death record.

i am looking to find out about him between 1900 and the boston census and 1918, when i find his name on a draft registration. i am also looking for charles h logan, his father and his parents. another person told me that she found the father remarried in 1904 to a catharine gallagher, who happens to be one of those borders, i believe. the person also told me she found birth and death records of two other children charles and estella had prior to harold. i am looking to find harold's birth certificate. i assume at this point i will have to visit poughkeepsie, boston, and salisbury, ct, where this other person told me charles was born.

i also need to verify that the people in boston are in fact my relatives. i am 99% sure, but estella also appears in the 1900 census as sarah e logan in poughkeepsie 3 days before the 1900 boston census. she could have been visiting, harold and charles are not in the poughkeepsie census. or they could have moved to boston after the poughkeepsie census, but i think the previous two children were born and died in boston.

North Bush Cemetery,Fulton Co New York

I am doing some research on this cemetery, I understand that this cemetery holds some of the first settlers to the county, which include African Americans. The "gage" family is my direct line and the one I am interested in knowing more about.

does anyone have information about the African Americans that lived in this area around this time? Was it common to bury Africans with Whites in the same graveyard? I always thought during these early years that they didnt bury people of different color or reigion together.

I am looking for the ancestors of my grandfather, he was one of 13 siblings in Baldwin ctr. and Flatlands. his siblings included Phoebe,Irene, married to Bill Smith,William a fisherman&farmer, Gilbert an electrician in Schenectady,Cornelius a carpenter in Middleburg, Frank a barber in Freeport,John ,Theodore(Ted) and others I don't know of. I believe my gr.grandfather was John White b.1866 in E.Willistone, N.Y. and I believe his father was also John who married Emma louise Dickenson. Her parents were William White and Caroline Matthews. and John's father was Cornelius and his father was Joseph and then family tradition has it that we are decendants of William White of the Mayflower. I would like to know if anyone has done a complete genealogy making these connections?

I found a lot of information on the blacks and native Americans living in Oyster Bay in 1920 and 1930; however I could not find a JOHN REED.

It is possible that he moved there after the 1920 US Census and left before the 1930 US Census. But I did find an African American JOHN REED born in Virginia and living in Brooklyn during this time period.

Can you give me more information on JOHN REED and your family?
I am reluctant to "drop" this on you and not be available for additional communications! However, I must travel to Texas to attend my elderly uncle. Take a close look at Edgecombe County, NC for your ancestors? In particular, Nathaniel/Nathan Spivey and wife Arseany(sp). You may have to search using the wild card option Spi* because the handwriting leaves much to be desired. Nathaniel Junior remained in this county through the 1930 Census. Notice a repetition of the name: Arsenie? Once met a lady who listed her phone in her grandmother's name. The reason? If someone was searching for the granny, the trail would lead to her! Smart! See 1900 Edgecombe-Upper Contoe-District 4-Image 11. Methinks this was David Spivey(20), his mom Arseany(Arlena), and sister Sinderrily(Cinderella?)? The ball is in your court! In 1920, see Martin-Robersonville-District 69-Image 4 for Dave Spivey age 35 and widowed. The counties of Martin, Edgecombe and Bertie are adjacent. In 1910, find Arseany living with Nathaniel Junior.

Thankfully I can do just as you suggested with the property. I googled and can see the building has been demolished for both the church and the home; however Temple U has excellent records about the homes in that area. Not to mention Philly now offers online lookup of properties for a fee.

The sad thing is my grandfather's siblings have ALL past away and I have no leads on their children. I'm determine and will find.

Thank you for your help and I hope one day the truth is revealed for your family. I sort of have the same problem with my father's birth father. He was given the last name of his aunt and not his mother. Talk about your drama! ;)

Thank you again!

No doubt you are aware that a title search on the property will uncover all previous owners/occupants? I asked about cousins/siblings to raise the possibility of an "alias"! My maternal surname is Epps, yet my family cannot establish kinship with "anyone" outside my grandfather's line. Recently, my 94-year old uncle acknowledged his father's lies. Sadly, he does not know his "true" surname! Best wishes!

You know I've looked at this record a hundred times and dismissed due to the race, then I read were ancestry matched the wrong back records to the front. SO this gives me a new lead! Thank you! As for cousins or siblings, my family doesn't remember his family. So I'm literally researching blind until I can find some other Spivey cousins to connect. Lulu may be a help! It may just require me requesting a death certificate if all else fails.

Thank you!

This is your latest posting so I will add comments here! David Spivey registered for WWII Draft in Philadelphia at age 61. His address was 1600 W. Thompson St and his birthdate was 28 Apr 1881. His next-of-kin was Mrs. Lulu Honley of 1602 W. Thompson St, next door. He also listed the Cooperation Church, 2234 W. Montgomery Ave, and himself as employer. Might just be another dead end? At the time of Jonathan's birth, Hertford was a county, carved from Bertie and several others. Can you connect to Spiveys outside this immediate family, i.e., descendants of David's cousins and/or siblings?
