Spears of South Carolina

Posted: 6 Oct 2011 10:57AM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Spears, Hendrieth
Three black men: Sippio Spears (who later became Sippio Hendrieth), William Spears (my great-grandfather) and Joseph Spears, were the only Spears living in Santa Rosa, FL in 1880 per the census. The census indicates that they were all born in South Carolina.

In 1860 in Santa Rosa County, FL (Division 2, Milton to be exact) there lived a white man named John A. Spears. John was born around 1787 in South Carolina and owned many slaves according to the slave schedules.

My theory is that Sippio, William and Joseph were either brothers that traveled to Santa Rosa together or they were all slaves of John A. Spears. Through a DNA tracing site, I have found a distant cousin that is related to Sippio. Perhaps this corroborates my theory.

If anyone has any information, especially about John A. Spears from South Carolina, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason C. Spears
