YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Mrs. Virginia Jackson, 96, departed this life on April 1, 2013, at Park Vista Retirement Center.
She was born Feb. 11, 1917, in Laurens, South Carolina, a daughter of Mr. Henry D. and the Rev. Grace Beasley Irby.
Virginia spent part of her childhood in Chicago before her parents moved the family to Youngstown, Ohio.
She graduated from Scienceville High School, known as North High School, in Youngstown in 1935.
In 1942, Virginia married Arthur Jackson in Youngstown, and they spent 40 wonderful years together before he passed away May 5, 1982.
Virginia enjoyed reading and learning and graduated from Youngstown State University. She worked for the Youngstown City School district as a counselor and teacher until she retired.
She was a member of the Community Church of God and a former Sunday school secretary, a member of the NAACP, a member of the McGuffey Center and a host of other organizations. She enjoyed traveling, cooking and shopping.
She leaves to forever cherish her beloved memory, a sister, Elizabeth (James) Thomas of Liberty, Ohio; a brother, Galvin (Virginia) Irby of Portland, Oregon and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Henry D. and the Rev. Grace Beasley Irby; two sisters, Grace Howell and Ulois Hill; and four brothers, William, Henry Jr., Cardell, and Clarence Irby.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the L.E. Black Phillips & Holden Funeral Home, Youngstown, Ohio
