Searching for Ancestors of Thomas A Sanders Sr.

Thomas Sanders was Native American, he was born March 1874 in South Carolina (according to census records), he married Adelaide E Trapp in 1893 in South Carolina.

I was able to locate Thomas Sanders in every census year from 1880-1930. However, none lists his parents, in 1880 he's a servant, there's a Frank Sanders living in the same house who may be a brother of Thomas.

Thomas also has a nephew named Thomas Smith (b. abt. 1913 in SC-see 1920 Census 10-WD Charleston, Charleston, SC) and a niece named Dulle Gilbo (b. abt. 1891 in SC-see 1910 Census 12-WD Charleston, Charleston, SC). Not sure if they are related to him or his wife.

I need to find the whereabouts of Dulle Gilbo, Thomas Smith, and Frank Sanders to be able to locate other family members of Thomas Sanders and his parents. Or perhaps Adelaide has other siblings born that I have no record of, the only sibling of Adelaide I have is Clatyon (1880 Census Fairfield Co. SC 13-TWP)

Thanks, any help is much appreciated

I am looking for any connections/roots that will connect to the following people: Enoch Foster born 1839 in SC, Lou Bailey born about 1857 in Alabama, Annie Foster born 1846 in SC, Jim Rice born abt 1875 in SC, Winnie Sweeney born abt 1876 in SC. I have searched all avenues that I can think of, so this is my frustrated effort to contact possible realatives that I am not familiar with to know more about my ancestors. I would be very appreciative for any help you can give me.
Ingrid634

PLEASE HELP!! Searching for Oliver/Roebuck/Eldridge in South Carolina and Georgia

This may get a little confusing so please bear with me. I am brand new to this whole genealogy research thing!

I am searching for descendants of Squire(b.~1862,SC;d.1926,Hart Co.,GA) and Sarah Alice Roebuck Oliver(b~1870, Anderson Co.,SC;d.1952,Hart Co.,GA). They were my maternal great-grandparents. I am eagerly searching for the descendants of their children, with the exception of their youngest child (James D. Oliver-my grandfather).

Squire and Sarah's children were:
Robert Oliver (wife: Ida, unknown maiden name)
Alice Oliver (husband: Alex Williams)
Thurmon Oliver (wives: Bertie Holland and Sallie Rucker)
Nettie Oliver
Lola Oliver (husband: Lenton Gary)
William Oliver (wife: Sallie Scott)
Annie Oliver (husband: Robert Jones)
Jeffrey Oliver (wife: Ceola, unknown maiden name)
Beausee Oliver (wife: Lucille Wakefield)
Claudia Oliver(husbands: Clarence Curry and Marrcell
Mauldin)
James D. Oliver (wives: Naomi Roebuck and Alice Hill)

, all Oliver (children) born in Georgia, maybe Moss/Elbert/Smith/Hart counites.

Also searching for parents of Squire and Sarah Alice Roebuck and their descendants.

The earliest record I have found for Squire Oliver is a census from 1880. He is listed as the nephew of the head of household (Robin Eldridge;b.~1820 in VA and wife: Katy, unknown maiden name;b.~1825 in SC). Their is a Lou Oliver(b.~1838,SC) listed as the sister of Robin Eldridge. I can only presume that she was Squire's mother, as well as the other Oliver children listed on the census: John Oliver, Liza Jane Oliver, and a male Lize Oliver. There was also a nephew, Ampy Oliver(?), listed on the record. Squire Oliver died in 1926 in Hart Co., GA.

All I know about Sarah Alice Roebuck Oliver is that she was born to a slave, Celand Roebuck, and an unknown white Union soldier in Anderson Co.,SC in 1870. Sarah Alice Roebuck Oliver died in 1952 in Hart Co., Ga. Celand also had a son, Maylon Roebuck, whose father is unknown. Celand Roebuck was also born in South Carolina.

ANY information or direction is most welcome and appreciated!!!! With all of these relatives, it's hard for me to believe that I am having trouble finding records! If you can help, please email Chante' at SINGCL6@yahoo.com

Thank you in Advance!

Hello!
I'm looking for any relations that may be associated with the two people mentioned in the subject line. They lived in Cherokee County at the time and had five/six children named Henretta, Horn, Lovelace, Belle (married a Blake/Dowdle)and Robt. I'm looking for any family descendants that may be still living in the area that I can reconnect with. A few moved up north and have lost touch as our elders pass away.

In the 1920's they lived in Gowdeysville, SC.

Any help would be appreciated. I want my son to know where he comes from so he doesn't lose site on the struggles of his ancestors.

Thank you!

I am researching the Millers from this area. Are any of these names familiar? Joseph Miller [eldest I've come across possibly father to Millers in area] Annias or Nias Miller married to a Molly. Their children were Nero, North, Hampton, James, Abraham, Ben, Gordon, Anna, Hettie, and Liddie. It appears this family group was in this area even before slavery ended. I have even found Nias on a voter registration list for this County. Others in this area were Lemon, Jay, Wesley, Binkey, and Fronie. Upon my father's death I undertook this search and was amazed to find so many people from whom he and I descend. I also want to clarify if this family group is connected to other Millers I have come across. If this is your line I would love to share info.

I have searched all avenues that I can think of, so this is my frustrated effort to contact possible realatives that I am not familiar with to know more about my ancestors.
African American McCUTCHEON/MYERS/FREDERICK in Barnwell County, SC

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping you might be able to help me find information about three African-American families: MYERS, FREDERICK and McCUTCHEON. There was intermarriage between various Myers relatives, as well as intermarriage between the Myers and Frederick families. I understand the McCutcheons owned land in Barnwell County as well, but moved up to Maryland.

In the MYERS family, I'm looking for details about:
-- pre-1910 information about George MYERS, the father of Roosevelt Dean "Ding" MYERS
-- any women George had children by (I know of two wives, Clara FREDERICK and Isaline WILLIAMS, but don't know the first one)
-- George MYERS' father (possibly Towne DORTCH -- who may have been a white man George's mother Hannah MYERS worked for)

In the FREDERICK family, I'm looking for:
-- maiden name of Charity FREDERICK, wife of Handy FREDERICK
-- parents of either Charity or Handy (they were born pre-Civil War)

In the McCUTCHEON family, I'm looking for:
-- any pre-1900 information about Wesley John McCUTCHEON, married to Mari Brunson and later to Rosa Marshall.

I've found alternate spellings for certain relatives: MEYERS (for George), FREDERICKS and McCUTCHEN/McCUTHEON (for Lottie).

Any help you might extend would be greatly appreciated!

~Lisa MB
Looking for help finding Haston Young born about 1860, his wife Carrie born about 1885. I have found the family in the 1920 and 1930 Census from Greenville, Greenville, SC. The family tree online is called: Young AfrAmer Tree. In 1910, they should have four small children: Mary (1902), Annie (1906), Vardry (1908) and Columbus (1909). The children and Carrie are all listed as being born in SC. It's driven me crazy that I can't find them in 1910 or early.

The blood line runs down through Columbus and his future wife Azalle Martin (1910-?)

Rogers family Williamsburgh, Georgetown, Darlington, Bennetsville

Greetings, I am searching for an info on Rogers family in South Carolina. My ancestors are Cuyer and Lee Rogers. Cuyer from Darlington possibly a slave, Lee was born around 1866 in Williamsburgh, had a aunt named Nelly Britton, who had a daughter named Dinah and a nefew H.Wilson. Lee later moved on to Bennetsville where he married my Great GrandMother a Pegues. Her name was Frances, and her parents names were Scipio and Dina. Scipio had children from his former wife Prince and Elizabeth. I was told they lived on Munlerlind street in Bennetsville in a big white house on the corner. They migrated to New Jersey around 1904 somewhere in there.

Is there anyone out that can find any info on: Tom Horne born 1887 and died in 1952 in chesterfield county. Or what about Adam born in 1900 in same county, maryjane, who later became a crofford. Or perhaps marzetto Horn who was only listed in the 1900 census in mt. croghan as five years old.I think annelizer horn is their mother , father was never listed.

Hi all,

I'm looking for ancestors of Wesley John McCUTCHEON, whose surname is (mis)spelled McCUTCHEN in the 1900 and 1910 census records. I'm also looking for any information about his wives, and some of his children.

He was born July 1870 in Barnwell County, SC and lived there for most of his life... died around 1925 or 1926 in Baltimore, MD (but buried in Barnwell County). Wesley was married twice, first to Marrie BRUNSON (who gave birth to eight of his kids), and then to a woman named Rosa (no children).

He may have had a girlfriend or common-law wife, possibly with the surname HANKINSON or HANKERSON. There is some evidence that he had four daughters with this surname with this woman before he married Marrie BRUNSON.

I have information about most of Wesley's children, but next to nothing about a son and a daughter: A.B. "Naughty" McCUTCHEON, and Mary "Candy" McCUTCHEON. I'm told Candy might've moved to the Midwest from Baltimore. A.B. just sort of falls off the map after 1910.

Any help you might send my way would be greatly appreciated.

~Lisa

African American Jenkins of Sumter County, South Carolina

Hi:

I am looking for a set of Jenkins that are descendants of Sumter County. To be specific, the furthest back I could go was to Riley Jenkins, who was married to Louise McCants sometime around the late 1800s. They had about 11 or so children. I'd like to know all of their names. So far, I have Anchom Jenkins (who was a big wig in the AME Church before passing away in Georgetown, SC in 1989); Kelly Jenkins who passed away in 1969; Moses Jenkins; Hattie Jenkins. There are so many missing. Would you happen to know this set? Or are you related somehow? Perhaps you may live next door to someone who married a Jenkins who is originally from Sumter? Please contact me if you can help.

Hi Everyone,

It's Toni Carrier from the USF Africana Heritage Project, writing to report that the Magnolia Plantation Foundation in Charleston, SC, is funding a project for us to conduct research in Drayton family papers, to reconstruct the family lineages of enslaved communities on Drayton family plantations.

This is the first time a former slaveholding family has ever undertaken or funded genealogical research in their family papers. We are profoundly grateful to them, and we would like to hear from descendants. The Drayton family held plantations in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Texas.

You can read about this groundbreaking research at the follwing URL:

http://www.africanaheritage.com/Lowcountry_Africana.asp

If you know or feel that your family has roots on Drayton family plantations, please do contact us.
I am looking information on my great-grandparents, John Edward (born 1868) and Arrilla (born 1883)Green. They lived around Gaffney SC for a period of time. My grandmother Nancy (1899) and her sister Bertha John (1904) were born there. The family migrated to Tuscaloosca Al around 1905. The 1910 census shows other children born in Tuscaloosa (James, Archiebelle, and Eddie Mae). John Green may have come from a coastal island. He had at least two brothers and from what my mom remembered they spoke with a dialect (possibly they spoke Gullah). If anyone has any information it will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Everyone,

It's Toni Carrier, writing to share the exciting news that the Magnolia Plantation Foundation of Charleston, SC has agreed to fund a sister website to Africana Heritage called Lowcountry Africana.

Lowcountry Africana will be entirely dedicated to records that document the family and cultural heritage of African Americans in the historic rice-growing areas of South Carolina, Georgia and extreme northeastern Florida, an area that scholars and preservationists have identified as a distinct culture area, home to the rich Gullah/Geechee culture.

The Lowcountry Africana website will be a treasure trove of primary documents, book excerpts and multimedia that further document and explore the dynamic cultural and family heritage of the Lowcountry Southeast.

Access to the entire content of Lowcountry Africana will always be 100% free. You can learn more about the website features by following the link below:

http://www.africanaheritage.com/Lowcountry_Africana.asp

We are excited and profoundly grateful to the Magnolia Plantation Foundation for their support of this wonderful project.

If you would like to share records for the database, you may send them directly to us at the email address below.
Welcome!!!

I volunteered to administer this board because there was no place on Ancestry/Rootsweb to post (or cross-post) messages for SC researchers.

I hope you will post queries, notices and other information on this board. Don't forget to check the other resources related to SC research on the web.

Right now, there is no state-wide organization of African-American genealogists based in or focused on SC. However, there are several listservs (through AfriGeneas) and programs (through the SC Genealogical Society) to help you. All welcome newcomers (or "newbies"). So there is a place at the table for all...

BTW - representatives of these and other groups will be at the SCGS summer workshop in Columbia (7/9 and 7/10) at the SC Archives (Parklane Drive).

Do hope you will find it useful to have a board for SC research. And best of luck in your efforts to document, preserve and proect your family's heritage.

Mims and Upson families in Edgefield County, SC

My paternal grandfather's family (the Mims) lived in Edgefield County, but from family oral history may have been in FL at one time and mixed with Seminole Indians. I have been told that my great grandfather was half Seminole. His name was Essie or Ess Mims, his first wife's name was Rose Lee Kelley (my great grandmother). My grandfather's name was Richard Essie Mims. My paternal grandmother's name was Katherine Upson. Her parent's names were Major Upson and Elizabeth or Lizzie Hammond. Her paternal grandparents were originally from Alachua, FL. If you have any information on either family, your help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Simon`s brother was named Amos (1882) and he married Hattie Mae Foxworth, they had a child, Floyd Legette Sr. Simon`s two sisters are named Sissie (1886) and Henrietta (1890). I’m not sure if the sisters married or had children. If these names sound familiar please write back. I was told that the siblings migrated to either North Carolina or Maryland.

Simon & Lula Legette met and married in South Carolina 1903, they had 14 children.

A lynching that took place on October 11, 1911 in Anderson County, South Carolina, the mob was led by State Legislator Joshua Ashley and the editor of the local newspaper. The target of that mob was one Willis Jackson who was accused of attacking a white child. He was hung from a tree upside down and shot numerous times.

I am not related to this family, I'm just passing on this information that I found while doing research on Lynchings.

I'm researching a family in Red Hill, SC circa the late 1800's. The family head was Calvin T. Stubbs married to a Nellie. Their children were Frank, Loretta, Carey, Mary, John, and Martha. I also believe they had a son Calvin, and daughter Penny although they were part of another household in 1880.
A Native American connection is a strong possibility within this family. Another family close by in Bennettsville, SC had a Nelson Stubbs as head, married to a Francis, children being Edward, Virginia, John E, and possibly a Hampton in 1880. Is there a connection between these two? I am told that there are A.A.Stubbs in Bennettsville to this day. If you have info on any of these please link with me and share.

Shaws in South Carolina

Greetings Brothers & Sisters,

My GG-Grand Father was Carolina Shaw, possibly from the James Shaw Plantation, who moved to Texas between 1868 and 1870. I have found him in the 1870 and 1880 census records living in Texas. He had a brother Henry who lived next door in the 1880 Census. He states his birthplace as South Carolina in both years. It is possible that he hails from the Swimming Pens Township which no longer exists.

I may be asking too much to try to break my 1870 wall, but there are still Shaws both Black and White in Sumter County and I would like to correspond with those who know of ancestors who had siblings that moved to Texas during the 18th Century.

In Marlin, Falls County, Texas there were about 20 black Shaws living in the county during the 1880 census and they all hailed from South Carolina. It looks like a "Family Migration", but it is possible that some of our relatives stayed in South Carolina.

Can someone help?

Thanking you in advance,

Sadie Richardson Allen

Daughter of Freddie Price Richardson (1928-2004 TX)
Grand Daughter of Bertha Shaw Price (1905-1986 TX)
Great Grand Daughter of Henry Shaw (1879-1960 TX)
Great Great Grand Daughter of Carolina Shaw (b.1835 SC)
