Thanks for your reply. And I agree - putting a lot of stock into race doesn't make much sense at times. I've come across some relatives who are alternated listed on several different censuses as negro, white, mulatto, and indian. As near as I can tell, it appears to be a question of who was completing the forms and could they tell or did the person and their family "pass".

It's all very confusing!
