1827/29 – 1920
May have been owned by Jonathon Peery Pickens of Kentucky. He was father of Gertrude Pickens who married John Quincy Pearce; they lived in Tennessee. Susan Pearce, a black, widowed schoolteacher, age 51, is listed in the 1880 Census as living with the family, with father born in NC and mother in Tennessee. John and Gertie had moved to Virginia by 1900; Susan did not, and lived in boarding house. She’s listed in Tennessee death records as dying 4 Sep 1920, age 93, in Gibson, TN, and buried in Bluffspring Cemetery, listed as colored.
I would like to know more about her, so would appreciate any guidance/pointers/suggestions on places to look. I have searched the data bases noted on this board.
Many thanks for any assistance.
