Also, don't forget that beginning in 1853, Virgina required owners to register the births of all slaves on their plantations. This list was complied across 5 (6??) volumes a few years ago and lists the name of the slave/mother/owner/location/date of birth. The title of the book is "Virginia Slave Births Index, 1853-1865." I am so sorry that I don't know the name of the editor/author. I copied the necessary pages for my family, but not the ISBN/author info :( Still, I've seen the compilation in libraries in RIC, NOVA and HR areas of Virginia. I really hope this helps and you find some success. FWIW, on the other side, once you get that planation/owner info, things get SO much easier.
