My ancestor named two slaves in his will and indicated "for his wife's use".
What are some resources of anything that I could find out about the lives of these two people after 1809?

His wife was to remarry by 1811 - and traveled to the opposite side of the state in Washington County.

If they were set free, how could I find that type of information?

Any help appreciated.

Slaves in Georgia

I have a partial listing of slaves that were sold at auction in Savannah, Georgia on March 2 & 3, 1859; this was known as "The Weeping Time". I was able to track my family back to Pierce Butler's plantations (Butler's Island and Hampton Point Plantation [St. Simon's Island], both off the coast of southern Georgia). If anyone is able to track their family back to these plantations, please let me know, I have lots of information for you.

Surnames above are some of the names that slaves took after Emancipation.

BYASS in Britiah Guinea (Guyana)

Greetings all!

I'm a member of the Australian branch of the BYASS family, an English family originally from Yorkshire.

We've done a lot of research on the family and have found a surgeon William BYASS (1793-1849) who spent time in Berbice, British Guinea. By googling <byass guyana> I've found many occurences of the name in Guyana. I'm wondering if these people are his descendents, or if the name was be adopted in some other way. Could he have been a slave owner and passed his name on that way?

Any suggestions or even better information gratefully received.

Regards,

Robyn
Melbourne Oz
List of Slave names in Haywood County/Springfield & Pewett

Looking for Thomas Springfield(Haywood County)- name of slave names from 1850-1860 and maybe after the war with the last name of Jones.
*I need to know if he took any slaves with him when he moved to Hardmen County after the war. If he did, What were their names?

Looking for William Pewett(Haywood County or Madison County)-I am sure he lived in Haywood during the 1830's.
I need the names of slaves he own in 1830-and on.
I am looking for two slaves (Lucy Ann 1869 and her sister Lena 1863)-these girls are connected to the Jones that I am looking for in Haywood with T. Springfield. Their last names might have been changed to Preit/Pewett but they were Jones. I believe that William own their mother(Lucy Jones) and she had the girls on the Pewett plantation. In 1880, the girls ended up living with their Grandfather in Haywood by the name of Somerset Jones.

I need to put the pieces together
Any information, would be appreciated.

Owners of Slaves in Mississippi

Hey!

I have found a few names that could be linked to the Hancocks we are looking for,,, if not you can tell me ok?

I did some research on the Alcorn Tishimingo, and Prentiss County Records,, Up until 1890 it was all together and known as just Tishimingo County.

Here is the info I have found....

J. M. Hancock--- 1840 Census Record

Owners of Slaves:

Year--1860's
J. M. Hancock owned 7 slaves
J. P. Hancock owned 2 slaves

I would put my word , that J. P. was John M.'s son!

School Records show there were Hancock children in school during 1856-1859.. the names are at the Alcorn County Court House and I am planning on visiting there this week.

Also,,, Benjamin Hancock was listed on the 1840 census record,,,and also these years

1876,,,1880

Has that he settled here in 1837 from South Carolina!
He was also in records at the court house in 1882!

If any of these names sound familiar,, please let me know,,, or if you wish for me to look for some one certian while I am at the court house,, please send me the names,,, ASAP!!!

Hope to hear from you soon!!

Charolett

U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules Index

I just came across the U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules Index database on ancestry.com and possibly it may help you in finding your ancestors. In addition to using your ancestors' names, I typed "slave" for occupation, and also tried "negro," "black" and "slave" as keywords. Also, interestingly, I noticed that some people had the letter "x" as their middle initial, and tried "x" as a keyword and a few more folks came up. I believe using the "x" was just a secret way to indicate African-American without actually saying it. I hope this helps out at least one person.

Hi. I'm looking for information on the slave trade in BAYOU CHICOT, LA. Does anyone have information on slaveholders in that area? Specifically, I am looking for slave ancestors by the name of GODFREY JASON born c. 1797, MOSES JASON born c. 1822, and HANNAH JASON THOMAS born. c. 1830. I'm guessing they picked up the surname after slavery. They came to Bayou Chicot from the Eastern Seaboard - either the Carolinas or Virginia.

Any information will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

COLE Slaves of GA>AL>MS

Can anyone help me find Joe Cole b abt 1850 in MS? I was able to find him in the 1870, 1880 Census but not before then. The 1880 Census shows him from MS. His wife Josephine Robertson was born in VA. They got married in Tunis, Burleson Co., TX. Where they settled and had 10 children. I did find a W.J. Cole in the 1860 census in MS. listed with several young boys. They are all white. One of them is Joe Cole b. 1850. Also I found in 1860 Slave schedule for W. J. Cole in Div. 1 Chickasaw , MS. He has about 20 slaves listed. One of them is a male age 10 which would be the right age for Joe. How can I verify this is Joe?

My grandmother's family is from Mount Hope their last names were Jackson and Stephenson. They were born between the years 1833 ro 1886.So far the thing I came up with is the 1870 listed as mulatto and the 1880 census listed as black.I believed my gggrandfather was a slave and so was his brother their last name was Stephenson living in Mount Hope. How can I prove if they were slaves or not?My ggrandfather was against talking about slavery in his family especially to his children. If you can help I really apreciate it .Thank you!

Free, Central Wiki Database for African and African American Genealogy

Hi Everyone,

It's Toni from Africana Heritage, writing to writing to share news about an upcoming project. We have been working for several months to put together a collaborative team to build a free, central Internet database for records of African and African American history and family heritage.

Our goal is to build a wiki database which anyone may add documents and images to, and which anyone may access for free, now and always. We are delighted to share the news that the vision has become a reality.

WeRelate, Africana Heritage and IDEAS4 are currently developing AfriQuest (www.afriquest.com) the free database for African and African American genealogy and history. Anyone will be able to add records and images to the database, and view the entire AfriQuest content, absolutely free, now and always.

Webmasters may also use AfriQuest as their primary database, or add the AfriQuest search box to their websites.

We will have a beta version ready in late January/early February of 2008, just a few short months away.

You can read more about AfriQuest at

www.afriquest.com

or read the press release at

http://www.africanaheritage.com/Afriquest_Press_Release.asp

We are very excited and we hope you will be, too.

The People's Archive is born!

Best and Peace,
Toni :)
Hi Everyone,

It's Toni Carrier from the USF Africana Heritage Project, writing to report that the Magnolia Plantation Foundation in Charleston, SC, is funding a project for us to conduct research in Drayton family papers, to reconstruct the family lineages of enslaved communities on Drayton family plantations.

This is the first time a former slaveholding family has ever undertaken or funded genealogical research in their family papers. We are profoundly grateful to them, and we would like to hear from descendants. The Drayton family held plantations in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Texas.

You can read about this groundbreaking research at the follwing URL:

http://www.africanaheritage.com/Lowcountry_Africana.asp

If you know or feel that your family has roots on Drayton family plantations, please do contact us. We would like to welcome you to the group and learn about your family's history.

You can contact us at toniheadr@aol.com or info@africanaheritage.com

Best and Peace,
Toni
www.africanaheritage.com
Whitaker Family

I have been conducting research on a slave owning
family with the surname Whitaker (Robert F.
Whitaker) for over 10 years. So far I have been able to
trace the family from Kentucky to Greene County, Illnois to Bastrop and Red River Countries, Texas from about 1810 through 1889. I have an approximately date on when the family
migrated to Bastrop County, Texas (1834-1835), however
I am having difficulty in locating any records verifing when they purchased their first enslaved African (my ggg grandmother) which occurred between 1835-1840. I assuming that the purchase occurred enroute or upon arrival in Texas.

I have already looked at the county records (deeds, wills, probate and tax records) in Bastrop County, Texas.

Need suggestion on how and where to proceed in my search.

DATA GOING ONLINE TO AID IN GENEALOGY OF SLAVERY

The genealogy Web site "Ancestry.co.uk" said Friday that it will post 3 million
names of slaves held across the British Empire in the early 19th century,
putting hundreds of thousands of pages of searchable information online to help
slaves' descendants research their past.

The project will use registers that the British government created between 1813
and 1834 in an effort to stamp out the slave trade by ensuring plantation owners
did not buy new slaves. Britain abolished the trade in 1807. Slavery was
outlawed in the colonies 17 years later.

Information from about 700 registers from 23 British territories and
dependencies will be made available online, free of charge, within the next 12
months, said
Simon Ziviani, a spokesman for Ancestry.co.uk. The database will be searchable
by first and last name, island, plantation, age and sex, he said.
Hi Everyone,

It's Toni Carrier, writing to share the exciting news that the Magnolia Plantation Foundation of Charleston, SC has agreed to fund a sister website to Africana Heritage called Lowcountry Africana.

Lowcountry Africana will be entirely dedicated to records that document the family and cultural heritage of African Americans in the historic rice-growing areas of South Carolina, Georgia and extreme northeastern Florida, an area that scholars and preservationists have identified as a distinct culture area, home to the rich Gullah/Geechee culture.

The Lowcountry Africana website will be a treasure trove of primary documents, book excerpts and multimedia that further document and explore the dynamic cultural and family heritage of the Lowcountry Southeast.

Access to the entire content of Lowcountry Africana will always be 100% free. You can learn more about the website features by following the link below:

http://www.africanaheritage.com/Lowcountry_Africana.asp

We are excited and profoundly grateful to the Magnolia Plantation Foundation for their support of this wonderful project.

If you would like to share records for the database, you may send them directly to us at the email address below.
Caddo Parish Slave Records

I'm researching my ggrandmother Amelia Mitchell Payne b. 1840 SC. Her children were sent away (sold sometime after 1859) by the GA slave owner. She was allowed to keep Charlie (whom he fathered). I am searching for the Louisiana slaveowner. I found Amelia Mitchell in the Caddo Parish 1870 census -- W. Harrison, George Paine, Amelia Paine, Manuel , Alsy, Eda, Emeline, Charlie, Cornelius.

George and Amelia married in 1878. In the 1880 census, The surname spelling is Payne and they have one child together Anna. Charlie, Cornelius are listed as step children - their surname is Mitchell.

There was an overseer from GA by the name of Payne - I haven't been able to make the connection. I have no information as to who W. Harrison might have been. Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.

Allen Polk

I am looking for any info that may lead me the right way in finding connection to my slave ancestors(surname-Polk. Accordnig to family stories pasted down, Allen Polk was a slave born around in Virginia (his mother and brothers were sold on the 4th of July),leaving him alone. The president Polk bought him and brought him to Tennessee. 1880 census shows him in Maury County, Tennessee (I beleive)... He later moved to Lawrence County, Alaama and married Margaret Early and Emma Early.

According to a neighbor, Allen fought on the Rebels side at Hoods Raid in Nashville, tried for many years to get his pension, but was unsuccessful. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

I have traced my Great-Great-Grandfather, Charles Harris, who mother and father was from North Carolina. His wife Sarah, was born of a house servant of George Owens. I believe his mother name was Myria or Mira, but I have not been able to locate his father or his father's name. The owner of the Harris family in Georgia was Richard Owen. They resided at one of the plantations in Habersham County, Fairplay, Ga. I have find few family members, but most do not remember much of the history. So if anyone has any more information, I would greatly appericate it.

Family stories say he got in some trouble and had to relocate, chainging his name.

His mother died 26 Jul 1959,and list him as living in Pennsylvania. I believe the name "Henry Jackson" might be significant in trying to locate his family.

Old Spanish Racial Terminology?

I am abstracting information from a 1790 slave ship record (Slave Trade to Havana, Cuba, 1790 - 1820, from the DPLS website). The African slaves are classified as "Piexas", "Mulecones" , and "Muleques"

I have been to several spanish speaking chat rooms and no one seems to know what these words mean. One of my Hispanic friends has heard "Piexa" used to refer to a Black person of "non-mixed" heritage. The other words could be equivalent to "mulato" but I don't understand the distinction between the two.

Thanks

Visit Sankofa's Afrikan Slave Genealogy at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~afamerpl

slavery question

Hello All,

I am new at researching our family history but luckily have a cousin that has been researching our family for years. My question is regarding slavery and my first relative.

We have traced the family line back to 2 people; Samuel & Lettie Owens in Alabama to at least 1855, this year is based on the birth of their first child. {census didn't start in this county until 1870} Census records show Lettie came from Virginia and stories passed down confirm this as well. Lettie stated she was the daughter of a slave but she didn't know her mother's name, nor did she remember the name of the people that raised her in Virginia. Based on census records Lettie was 14 when she had her first child. So she was probably quite young when she moved from Virginia to Alabama. We have no idea exactly where in Virginia she lived.

Oddly enough, I moved to Virginia a few years ago and I am interested in trying to find out about Lettie's family. I thought of searching all the Virginia census starting in 1840, but Lettie was a very popular name at that time. I am not sure I would be able to determine which is the correct person since I don't know her maiden name. Does anybody know how I would go about searching for her?

Any suggestions on the best way to start would be greatly appreciated! :-)

Thanks!

Rozz
Plantation or Large Farm

I am looking for the Dunbar Family and/or Ashley Family who were large slaveholders in Barnwell County, South Carolina. These farms could have been located near Lower 3 mile Run, presently the Savannah River plant occupy the area. Name of farm could have been Steel Creek. We are looking at the years of 1760 to 1865.

Any information would be helpful.

Thank you
